JUNE NINETEEN 351 WEST 18TH HUNDRED AND EEETY- STRAUBENMULLEE TEXTILE STREET NE AUSTIN G. CLARK DEDICATIO We, the graduating class of June 1946, in recognition of the services rendered to the Straubenmuller Textile High School by Mr. Austin G. Clark since 1921, and in recognition of his invaluable assistance to the members of the graduating class throughout our school career, do hereby express our gratitude and appreciation and to him we respectfully decli- cate this book. ELIZABETH M. SHEEDY Kiln QHHBIUUITHIII Elizabeth M. Sheedy was our first teach- er of mathematics, and had acted as head of that department for many years. From the very beginning of her long career she had become a Textile tradition in that it was natural for pupils to take their troubles and problems to the sympathetic and un- derstanding ear of '6Miss Sheedyf' She soon entered into all their experiences, and made them feel that she was a true friend. Her earnest advice was always mixed with a touch of innate humor. Withal she had a generous and kindly heart. No member of the Textile faculty had received more tokens of esteem from pupils than Eliza- beth Sheedy. The seniors of Textile High School join the faculty in expressing their deepest sympathies for the loss of a fine teacher and a wonderful woman. H. NORMAN FORD-Acting Principal To THE SEN1oRs: I am pleased to have this opportunity of Writing a few words to the members of the class of June 1946. May I congratulate each of you upon the completion of your l1igl1 school course. It is worthy of mention that your class has established an excep- tionally fine record in this school. The scholarship record that you have made is noteworthy. There are many more members of this class than is usual who have planned to attend college and who are peculiarly well fitted to profit from a college education. I feel certain that those of you who go on through college will bring credit not only upon yourselves but also upon the school. You may find it difficult to believe right now that your high school career has been-and may well be-the most significant period in your lives. I firmly believe, however, that as the years pass you will come to agree with me. In this most formative period in your lives you have laid the foundations and groundwork for your future. You have ac- quired basic knowledge and skills. You have learned to express your- selves in speech and in writing so that you may impress yourselves upon others. You have been shown the value of fine personality traits and have striven hard, I hope, to strengthen your own personality. You have been taught the exceedingly important art of living in peace and har- mony with your fellowman without regard to his origin or his religion or economic status. That you have learned well all of these things is my earnest hope. No matter how well you have learned all of these things you will still find it difficult to adjust to the world as it is today. We are passing through a violent period of world-Wide adjustments and readjustments. Every nation is attempting to strengthen its position, both economically and politically, with respect to its neighbors and its competitors. All of this jockeying for strength and power is reflected from the top all the way down to the various positions which you individually will be called upon to fill. That you will bring to these positions the necessary skills and the required knowledge and experience based upon a broad and enlightened training is my firm conviction. Strength, character, will power, perseverance, devotion to the ideals as they have been taught you-all will aid you in achieving success in the tasks that may be assigned you. I am proud of each one of you and I wish to extend to all of you my very best wishes for a pleasant and a full life. Sincerely yours, H. In the glimmering light a milkman's horse and wagon clatter down the avenue. New York begins to stir. Workers slowly disappear into the subway. In the distance the siren of a fire engine and the screeching of brakes proclaim that New York has come to life. With that ever familiar cry, MHold that doorlw school girls and boys busily elbow their way into the already crowded trains. House- wives are rushing breakfast so they can start their early morning shop- ping. Children are running to the parks to play. Typewriters clickg tele- phones ring-New York begins to work. New York is called the city of laughter and fun, but the little things that don't seem to count make this New York of ours a city with a heart. As the day passes the grating of brakes may mean a child is hurtg the clang of the fire engine--a home is lost. The rustle of white satin going down the aisle of a church is the beginning of a new life for two young people. Tears of happiness of a mother at the station welcome her boy home. The incessant gossip of a neighbor conceals a kind heart. This is the real New York. At the end of the day, people once more rush into the subways. Now they are heading home-to a quiet evening with their loved ones. Others crowd the 6GGreat White Way, living in a world of fantasy, if only for a few hours. Then, slowly, all is quiet again. As the voice of the speaker droned on, I began to doze off . . . New York, a warm, sunny day. I was walking on what I believe was Seventh Avenue. I can't be really sure, things were very hazy before my eyes. As the fog cleared I saw GEORGE CLOSS draped over the traffic light, which was held up in the air by CLEM PALLOTTO. I refused to admit to myself that this was really true so I walked on. I stopped to admire a men's clothing store window and was startled to notice the remarkable resemblance between the dummies in the win- dow and my classmates, DANNY MCLEOD and HARRY ALBERTI. Inside, JEROME STOLZENBERG was flirting with the clerk, namely CARMEN MUGNO, as she helped him select a becoming tie. Sneaking away, I met ARTIE WEINBERGER carrying two brilliantly colored signs which proudly announced that the Circus was in town. Artie paused only long enough to give me two semi-free tickets and pathetically moved on. I crossed the street and was struck by a car driven by none other than ABE CHARLIP. QLWell, Abe, I said, Mwhat a surprise to see you. He quickly replied, MDaw. This remark made us sweethearts. Reach- ing deep into his pocket he came up with two autographed pictures of himself. Wfhat reminds me, I said, 'QI have two tickets to the circus. He whisked me away in his car and the next minute we were in front of the circus listening to JERRY HOLLIS barking at the crowd. Our instincts prompted us to sneak in but ARTIE GOLDLUST, the manager, caught us just as we remembered that we had tickets. We gave them to him and he looked at us luguhriously saying, MSince you are former Textile students I will personally show you about the circus and enable you to see all your old friendsf, He first took us to the menagerie and they all waved their senior hats at us. In passing we noticed that JENNY VASSEN was gaping at the animals and they were gaping right back at her. We stopped to see RITA '6Muscles'7 MINGA- LONE lift a 900 pound weight and pass it to HARRY PEVERARO the Head Yogi and Nail Bed Sitter. It was necessary for us to pass the snake charmer's booth. Reluctantly passing hy we peered in and noticed BEA HIEBSCHER, snake charmer, charming PAUL GREEN- WALD. NORMA ESPINOSA passed with a pail of water to feed the elephants. '6Red Capi' BIOLOSTOSKY dashed past with the ele- 34 phantis trunk. EDITH MALCOLM was busily engaged in training her Scotty dogs QI kilt that jokej. SID PRINE was impersonating the beard- ed lady. The Manager remarked, 6'He's fired. Heis got five o'clock shadowfi After that insult we decided to take the hint and go. As we left all the monkeys waved at us and we were proudly aware that we had made a good impression on them. Abe Charlip gave a long, low whistle and the motorcycle with ARTIE GORDON on the back galloped toward us. Riding up Broadway, we saw the accomplishments of Textile seniors all around us. Exhaust- ed, we decided to eat. We saw a sign reading Lox and Bagels and SID WEINSTEIN'S smiling countenance yelling, 'QTWO for a quarterf' He took us inside and introduced us to his staff-PHIL GOLDBERG punching the holes in the bagels, ELOISE GINZBURG, slicing the lox, and ALVIN MATSIL, the Greek waiter. Leaving Sid's place we passed an out-door swimming pool where we saw DOTTY YAKO teaching NORMAN MUEHSAM and JERRY BERNSTEIN how to swim across a puddle. JOHNNY SAMAROTTO was standing by in case somebody drowned. We wanted to watch but were distracted by HARRY NAF- PLIOTIS and his band at the Orange Room at Nedick's. ROBERT BORGERSEN was the chief trumpet man and TONY DIECIDUE was the featured vocalist. Abe let out another whistle and a horse with GRACE TESTA on the back motored up to us. I hopped on its spacious back and was taken to the doors of Textile High. Grace led me through the 18th Street portals of Textile. As I entered, I was stopped by Commissioners WEITZNER and BRACCO who politely asked me to extinguish my butt. This request was supplemented by a neon sign in the lobby which read: uSmoking Permitted in Classrooms Only. Stealthily making my way through the halls, I peaked in one of the classrooms where, astonished, I saw BEATRICE TEGNAZIAN, GINNY NIELSEN, AUDREY BIER- MAN and MARGARET DERDERIAN painting murals in what I found out was the Students' lounge. In the meantime GLORIA LANGE was still endeavoring to take pictures for the L0oM. Suddenly, the gong sounded and a horde of rushing students pushed me out of the door and knocked me down. Wlien I recovered, I noticed among them LOR- RAINE SPANGLE and BERNICE BIREN, VICKY GONZALES, SAM SCILLITANI, BERNIE PLATNICK and MIKE BELLE. Closely fol- lowing this group was RUTH YUNKER frantically pursuing the uKil- ler, while she in turn was frantically pursued by BERNIE BOOK. '35 My chauffeur led me by the arm to his bus, and as I stepped in a terrific explosion greeted me. When the smoke and the debris cleared, I saw RALPH KRUBNER, PAT RAUCCI, MILT COHEN, ILSA ROTHSCHILD and VICTOR DINICOLA manufacturing high-test low octane gasoline on which the bus was running. DICK REICHSTADTER and .I OE SACKATILE were the able kibitzers in the experimentation. The bus skidded along the congested open spaces and my attention was attracted by EVELYN DE PACE and her colleagues, FRED GEMIND, MARGARET BOCK, MARTIN BORDOCK and FRANK I-ILADIO, as they were painting a signboard. Following them with a tearful expres- sion on his face and a pail of paint in his hands was ARTIE KLEVENZ. Sticking my neck out further I saw MILLY FLORIO following a man with a clarinet. The bus stopped with a screech of the synthetic brakes and I heard a loud commotion in the front as GENE MANGIACAVALLO was thrown out for putting a slug in the coin box. The bus could not go any further due to the fact that the Mad Scientists in the back ex- hausted their store of inventiveness and I was compelled to continue my journey on foot. Uncertain of my whereabouts I stopped to inquire for directions in a luxurious night spot, commonly known as G'The Wolffis Den. Re- membering LENNY WOLFF was an old friend of mine I walked in with the intention of getting a free meal. Sure enough, on my entrance I noticed some former members of my Senior Class fnow employed as chorus chicksj namely VILMA LANDETA, CATHERINE O'CON- NOR, ANN BECKER and INGA WOLFARTH. TERRY LUNETTA was warbling a sentimental ballad with the assistance of PAUL RAN- DAZZO'S band. GLADYS BARNETT, the glamorous cigarette girl, was engaged in peddling cigarettes. Wllell I refused to surrender my worn-out Senior hat to ALIDA BLUMER, who through some tragic mistake in life was the hat-check girl, assisted by IRMA VASQUEZ. the manager, BERNIE FORMAN. approached me, armed with two monstrous looking bouncers, FRANK PERROTTA and VICTOR TIRRITO. Suddenly there were rough hands upon me. A twist, a jerk fthese were two of themj and I was flying through the air. I looked down and saw tl1e ground coming closer . . . closer . . . closer. I landed with a thud and everything went black. I felt someone shaking me. I heard a multitude of strange voices ring in my ears. I awoke with a start and heard someone say, GGThey'rc calling your name. Go get your diploma. You've graduated. . .
