HEADMA-siri5R's MESSAGE ln June l had a lively discussion with some young visitors who were very surprised to find Strathcona-Tweedsmuir was not what they had imagined an independent school to be. They had expected to arrive in front of an old, imposing building with ivy growing over the walls, They thought they would see self-contained classrooms, windowless hallzvafgs and much evidence ot' regimentation. Fortunately, Strathcona-Tweedsmuir School does not it this stereotype of an independent school. Ho'.'.'ever, ' .'.' e share some of the traditional features common to independent schools: uniforms, houses, a philosophy of Va healthy mind in a healthy body , an emphasis on the development of character and even quaint titles such as 'lheadmasterf With the evolution of StrathconaeTweedsmuir School from our predecessor schools we have inherited some special traditional features. The priority given to public speaking comes to us from Strathcona School for Boys. The three houses, Buchan, Burns and Dover were acquired from Tweedsmuir and to them we added Howard in honour of Mr. Alfred Howard, Many of our major trophies and awards have come to us from these two schools. We share with St. Hildals the values of respect for others, thoughttulness, consideration, and a sense oi fair play. Our alumni association has been infiuenced signihcantly by one special lady, Dr. Marmie Hess, a graduate of St. Hildas. The Yearbook reflects the school we have become, one that has built on the strengths of its past and one that is growing confidently towards the future. lt is establishing its own traditions and is emerging as a dynamic force in the ives of its students, teachers, parents and alumni. I congratulate Paidia '87 Editor, Jim Giannoulis, and his committee for presenting the sixteenth year of Strathcona-Tweedsmuir, Alberta's unique and progressive independent school. Peter B. Ditchburn Headmaster
