Freedom to drink, freedom to smoke, freedom to drive, freedom to choose to go to school or not to go to school, freedom to choose which school they will attend. Such catch phrases as NDo your own thingn, nLife should be led like a cavalry chargen, and the old, old standbye, nEat drink and be merry, for tomorrow you may dien are bantered about by young people with no real thought to completing the phrase. Let me pose a proposition. Increasing age is directly proportional to increasing responsibility. To say it in non-mathematical language, the older you are, the more responsibility you have. In symbols this could be represented as AMR and A:KR where HAH represents your age, URW represents your responsibility and HKU is a constant that does not depend on age or responsibility. If you can see this proposition and then understand the concept, we can go on Lat us look gives you freedom to requires you to have again at our catch phrases. WFreedomU. We got on the van and rode into Okotoks. We went to Ellis' house. Then we went to see the church that Ellis' dad works in. It looked old. We saw the fire station and there are only two fire trucks in it. One is for the country and one is for Okotoks. We went to the wheat elevators. Only one man works there, but when the wheat comes in there are three or four men working there. We found out that there are only two banks in Okotoks. Next we went to the river. The river was called Sheep River. Then we went to the bakery and got some doughnuts. We walked to Mrs. Foster's house and ate the doughnuts. Then the van came and picked us up. We went back to the school. It was a nice day. David Sedgewick Grade 3. STUDYTNG PIONEERS We made butter on Friday, last week. We saw things that pioneers used to make butter. We put cream in jars and a little of John's milk that would turn. Only John's and Tony's turned. We made ice-cream. Mrs. Kaul brought an ice-cream maker. We made and ate ice-cream. We also saw a spinning-wheel, an old-fashioned foot-warmer, hairpins, a spoon and some guns. Randall Moore Grade 2. EGGS I like poached eggs, scrambled eggs, hard or soft boiled eggs, Swiss eggs, eggs in white sauce, Polish eggs, any kind of eggs even Scottish eggs and Eggs Benedict. I love all kinds of eggs! In the night sky rockets traced paths of fire on their way to the Moon and mars. Roger's shirt was open to the third button and Mrs. Williams pressed hard against his chest. UOhhhh,N said mrs. Williams. She was completely limp. NYou're so strong, Rogerg when you squeeze me like this it hurts.n WThe strength of my desire,' Roger said. He squeezed harder. She was now in the bag, Roger knew from many experiences, and good for anything from Jewelled cuff-links to an investment in a play starring Roger. A dozen women had made that same investment, but the only lines Roger ever learned to perfection were those of his love routine. NYou're hurting me,W gasped Mrs. Williams. UI can't help myself,U said Roger in a deep vo1ce, squeezing even harder. The door of his bedroom burst open and a man rushed in. He was middle- aged and had a paunch. He was the Chairman of the Board of Tri-Planet Mining, with assets over twenty million. He was also Mr. Williams. HYou skunkln he shouted. HYou dirty, wife-stealing W. He waved a new lasar gun at Roger. WJames!U shrieked Mrs. Williams. nHilda,N bellowed Roger. Something big and shiny, with arms of chrome and an alloy middle, came storming into the room. It took the gun away from Mr. Williams and tucked him under one arm. It scooped up Mrs. Williams, who had rushed to her husband's aid, and tucked her under the other arm. It carried them from the apartment and slammed the door behind them. NI will make you coffee,N Hilda said metallically. NI will make you Swedish meatba1ls.W WDamn!N Roger cursed. He held up his cupped palm in a dramatic gesture. UI had her, damn it3N WNQ food,U said Hilda. WWho said anything about food ?n Roger demanded. Hilda marched towards the kitchen with a measured tread. Over her shoulder she said: UThe man was here for the rent today.N Roger uttered a general curse for all landlords and for his in particular Nwhat did you tell him ?N NYou were not at home.' Hilda paused and regarded Roger with glowing plastic eyes. He tried to look melancholy. UH1lda,N he said, Wwe are broke.' WBroke,N repeated Hilda. She had been through this before. Wlt hurts me to ask this of you, Hilda, but there's a factory I know of, a place where they lease robots....n 36 NA factory.u WYes. Honestly, Hilda, 1t'll only be for a while. I know you need new rheatats and you haven't had a pressure check in a year.n He patted her shoulder WSay you'll take the Job.n WI will take the Job,u Hilda said. NI will make Swedish meatballs.N She clumped into the kitchen. What he would have done without Hilda, Roger didn't know. He hated to even think about it. You couldn't get another one like her for love or money. She was definitely a female robot, smaller than the all-purpose kind, with real domestic aptitudes built in. She was a fine cook, an excellent laundress, and she had a woman's memory for trivia. Hilda had been built by a Swedish firm for its president's widow. What had become of the widow afterward, Roger was not sure. Maybe she had made good her threat to commit suicide. One thing about Hilda, Roger thought, she'd never commit suicide. No matter how often he took advantage of her, she'd never threaten him with harm, the only emotion a robot could have was love for its master. WHore coffee, Hilda,N commanded Roger, downing the last of the meatballs. He felt much better. nAnd press my flannels, I'm going out.n It was a bad night. The only likely woman Roger ran across was with her husband who watched her closely. Recurring thoughts of the Williams fiasco made Roger drink too much. He came home with a headache. Hilda was already setting the table for breakfast. UA woman called.W Roger's nostrils flared. WWho was it ?N UAl1ce,n she said. NHell,U he said disgustedly. Alice Carter was only eighteen years old and didn't own a thing. The young ones were always so easy. NShe cried,U Hilda said. NThey always cry.n He bit into a piece of toast that was done exactly to his liking and picked up the paper Hilda had put on his plate. After reading a few lines, Roger groaned. Hr. and Hrs. James Williams had crashed their helicopter. A copter control tower man had overheard snatches of an argument between them. Mr. Williams forgot to set his automatic altitude controls. Mrs. Williams was in a critical condition. NToo bad they weren't killed,U muttered Roger. Or too bad Mr. Williams wasn't seriously hurt. With the childish reason- ing adults could muster up, he was sure to blame Roger for the crash. And twenty million dollars could make a lot of trouble. NHilda,W said Roger, WI think we'll go to Paris. You'd like that wouldn't you ?0 WPar1s,W Hilda said. She had been through this before too. While she clumped off to begin packing, Roger stood and stared moodily out the window. Sometimes it seemed that no matter how hard a man tried he couldn't get a break.... NPacked,' Hilda said as she marched back into the livingroom. Roger was sitting on the couch, his head in his hands. Hilda regarded him. nPacked,N she repeated. Wln a minute,W Roger said, l've got an awful headache.N WI will bring headache pills.n She clumped into the bathroom and back again, bearing the pills and a glass of water. After Roger had swallowed the pills Hilda brought the brandy from the sideboard and poured him a stiff drink. 37 WI will make more coffee,N she said. It was really wonderful, Roger thought, the way Hilda knew exactly what it. was warming his stomach and his arms around her alloy love you.N him, and yet so funny he had to to do. Once she learned a routine she never forgot Suddenly Roger felt much better. The brandy making his head swim. He ran after Hilda and flung middle and hugged her. HHilda,H he exclaimed. HYou're wonderful! I UYou only say that.H UNO, I mean it. Honestly.n It was vaguely so familiar it puzzled laugh. And because the brandy was making him NMmmmm,H said Hilda. HK1ss nHilda! Where did you ever NI listened.n me again.N learn such feel so light-headed he kissed her things ?W So that was why the routine seemed so NHilda,U Roger laughed, Uthere's nobody in the world like you.' His laughter took on a twinge of pain. HHilda! You forget those arms are steel. When you squeeze me like this it hurts.n WThe strength of my desire,n said Hilda metallically. HYou're hurting mein familiar. What a robot I NI can't help myself,N said nilda. She squeezed harder. Roger went limp in her arms. She let him go and he fell to the floor. A gurgling sound came from his throat and blood ran from his nose. The sound stopped and so did the blood. Hilda marched to the closet and got the cleaning things to wipe the spots from the rug. Then she lifted Roger and put him on the couch. She put the cleaning things back and clumped into the kitchen. HI will make you coffee.W said Hilda.
