THE SPORTS SCENE o SENIOR FOOTBALL Our seniors began with high hopes this year for a successful season. As the year progressed this was not to be. Once again we lost the Red Feather game to the powerful Central Ramblers. Except for one game our defence played solid football but the offence could not get rolling. With the return of nineteen players next year plus some very good juniors coming up to senior, we should improve greatly next season. Look forward to next year for the tide to turn. You will see the Northwestern Huskies on the move upwards. o JUNIOR FOOTBALL For its second year of operation our Junior team at Northwestern has done very well. Making it to the semi-finals is no disgrace and neither is being ousted by a fantastic team like Exeter. This year ' s team had five second year players who shared co-captain positions. They played as a team of which they were proud to be members. I am sure we will all miss the gray pants and jerseys working out until next year rolls around and they start spring training. Next year ' s team promises to be a good one as ten boys will be back for their second year. O SENIOR VOLLEYBALL Prior to the final tournament on October 30 the team had several exhibition games in which they did fairly well. We had a good look at our competition and knew very well what we were up against when October 30 came euround. On October 30 we played St. Mary ' s first in which we won two straight games. We then played Mitchell and took two games straight again. We then had a very long wait (3y2 hours) before we met Clinton (they won the tournament and also WOSSA). We lost two games stredght in this series. This was a big disappointment as the team had done very well against Clinton in pre-toumament games. Listowell then beat us in the semi-finals by 15-2 and 15-11. The boys had a pretty good year and should be very strong next year. o SENIOR BOYS ' BASKETBALL The senior Boy ' s Basketball team is one of the best senior teams that have existed at North- western. The team spirit is very high and there is a good chance it will go all the way to the championships. One of the highlights of the season was the 79-76 defeat of Central in their own gym by the powerful Huskies. Our three centers are Steve Smethurst who is 6 feet and two inches. He is an excellent shooter. Glen Deitrich and Hayes Rothernel play left forwards. We have two aggressive red-headed, left handers, Larry Cummerford and Doug Horst. At right forward we have John Bakelaar and Ron Keis. Our four guards are Ivan Coulthard who is our team captain and leading scorer, John Bell, Ron Osborne, and Paul Gummow. With such a strong team how can we lose? o GOLF This year Northwestern hosted the Huron Perth golf tournament at the Stratford Country Club. The competition was very keen with some opposing competitions coming close to breaking par. Northwestern had a completely new team and found the competition to be a bit overwhelming. By next year, however, we should again place high in the winner ' s circle.
