We also like to look back and remember good things. It is with great pleasure that we, the Nor ' Wester Staff, present to you the Nor ' Wester 1972. The task that seemed so insurmountable as we began, became an enjoyable challenge as we worked together. We have tried to present a true picture of the life at Northwestern and to promote pride in our school. This year we have provided an extra feature in our Yearbook by including colour pictures of our school. We wish to thank all who have contributed so generously of their time and talents to make this Yearbook possible. This is truly a student production for students have had a vital part either in helping to put it together, taking pictures, or in selling the Nor ' Westers. We had all the responsibility of producing this Yearbook, benefiting from only the occasional advice of staff advisors. As the year progressed this was not to be. Once again we lost the Red Feather game to the powerful Central Ramblers. Except for one game our defence played solid football but the offence could not get rolling. With the return of nineteen players next year plus some very good juniors coming up to senior, we should improve greatly next season. Look forward to next year for the tide to turn. You will see the Northwestern Huskies on the move upwards. o JUNIOR FOOTBALL For its second year of operation our Junior team at Northwestern has done very well. Making it to the semi-finals is no disgrace and neither is being ousted by a fantastic team like Exeter. This year ' s team had five second year players who shared co-captain positions. They played as a team of which they were proud to be members. I am sure we will all miss the gray pants and jerseys working out until next year rolls around and they start spring training. Next year ' s team promises to be a good one as ten boys will be back for their second year. O SENIOR VOLLEYBALL Prior to the final tournament on October 30 the team had several exhibition games in which they did fairly well. We had a good look at our competition and knew very well what we were up against when October 30 came euround. On October 30 we played St. Mary ' s first in which we won two straight games. We then played Mitchell and took two games straight again. We then had a very long wait (3y2 hours) before we met Clinton (they won the tournament and also WOSSA). We lost two games stredght in this series. This was a big disappointment as the team had done very well against Clinton in pre-toumament games. Listowell then beat us in the semi-finals by 15-2 and 15-11. The boys had a pretty good year and should be very strong next year. o SENIOR BOYS ' BASKETBALL The senior Boy ' s Basketball team is one of the best senior teams that have existed at North- western. The team spirit is very high and there is a good chance it will go all the way to the championships. One of the highlights of the season was the 79-76 defeat of Central in their own gym by the powerful Huskies. Our three centers are Steve Smethurst who is 6 feet and two inches. He is an excellent shooter. Glen Deitrich and Hayes Rothernel play left forwards. We have two aggressive red-headed, left handers, Larry Cummerford and Doug Horst. At right forward we have John Bakelaar and Ron Keis. Our four guards are Ivan Coulthard who is our team captain and leading scorer, John Bell, Ron Osborne, and Paul Gummow. With such a strong team how can we lose? o GOLF This year Northwestern hosted the Huron Perth golf tournament at the Stratford Country Club. The competition was very keen with some opposing competitions coming close to breaking par. Northwestern had a completely new team and found the competition to be a bit overwhelming. By next year, however, we should again place high in the winner ' s circle. o SENIOR GIRLS ' BASKETBALL This year the Senior Girl ' s Basketball team proved that the girl ' s teams of Northwestern are coming out on top. During the first few games of the season the girls looked very promising and proved it by the end of the season. The team finished second in the Huron Perth finals against St. Mary ' s. The girls worked hard together but the St. Mary ' s team out-scored our team. After Huron Perth the girls travelled to St. Thomas for WOSSA. At 8:00 it was all over. Northwestern was defeated by a team from London. The basketball season for Northwestern always ends too soon as far as the girls are concerned. This is not always so for the coach. This year the girls were worked hard in practice and in every game and that is why we came out on top. The person who we thank for all the hard work, time and effort put into the team is Miss Campbell. o BOYS ' CROSS COUNTRY This year the boy ' s cross country team travelled to the ' Alps ' of Wingham with high hopes but the competition proved to be too much. The competition combined vdth the arduous course caused the Huskies to finish in the middle of the pack. O GIRLS ' CROSS COUNTRY Results of the Huron Perth Cross Country Meet were as follows: Top runners: Midgets-Donna Skinner 4th Seniors-Karen Grasby 3rd Karen Grasby represented the team at WOSSA ' xajgiBiBiaaiaiaiarajaraisiBXSJSJsiEfEiHfsiHiajEjgiaiE O JUNIOR BOYS ' BASKETBALL This year produced the best jimior basketball team Northwestern ever had. It started in November when Mr. Wright with only two jimiors from last years team put together a championship team. The season opened with nine exhibition games and coming out with eight wins and one loss against Guelph C.V.I, proved to produce an exciting year. Next came the Huskie Tournament where the Huskies defeated Tilsonburg, Annondale and Aylmer, but were defeated by Central 56 - 39 in the championship game. Another tour the Huskies attended was up in Goderich. The juniors won their first game against London Banting 52 - 51 but were beat in the semi-final game against Strathroy 53 - 27. The juniors got another crack at Strathroy a few weeks later and won 59 - 45. Now, entering league a ction the juniors came through with a perfect nine win zero loss record and the highlight was beating Central in their own court 57 - 40. This set the Huskies up with first place and having to play MitcheU in the playoffs and defeating them 58 - 27. For the championship it was North- western against Central again and the first game being in Central, the juniors surprised evsryone by defeating Central 44 - 35. The second game being in our home court was a real thriller by upsetting a Central 13 point lead giving Northwestern it ' s first Huron Perth Junior Basketball Championship. At the end of the season the Juniors record was 21 wins, 4 losses. The team would like to express their gratitude to Coach Wright and his managers for building a champ- ionship team. I believe in the integrity of other people, assured that they try as hard to follow the gleam, even as I. I believe in the gallantry of older people whose seasoned experience and steadfast devotion has preserved for me the precious heritage of the past. I believe in the magnificance of the past, knowing that without Its storied wealth I would possess nothing. I believe in the challenge of the future, fully realizing there will be no future except it becomes alive through me. I believe in the sacredness of duty, through which I must conserve what was given me, and thereby help to preserve it for all comers after me. I believe in the contagion of health, and that I can spread it through cheerfulness, wholesome habits, sensible expenditure of energies, and wise use of foods. I believe in the nobility of work as the creative expression of the best within me, and as my share in easing the common load of all. I believe in the enrichment of play and laughter as the means of cleansing my body of staleness and my soul of bitterness. I believe in the holiness of friendship, knowing that my life Is a tapestry woven from the silken threads of many beautiful lives. Because I believe this, I therefore believe in God, who justifies all my beliefs. He is the still small voice within, ever urging me toward the unattained. Since He cares for these things, I believe that even death cannot steal these precious possessions from me. And whatever more I believe is entwined in those precious feelings that lie too deep for words. Remember when you talk you only repeat what you already know; but if you listen you may learn something. History is a fabric woven by mankind on the loom of time. Its designs vary with the years-now dark, now bright, now bold, now seemingly insignificant. Somehow we must seek the pattern as it was meant to be, and help to make it a thing of beauty and strength.
