reason and calm ludgment It is my hope that your education at Stratford High School has influenced you by making you realize the purpose of your human existence As an individual you are born with the power of decision There are some forces over which you have no control such as life and death otherwise you have freedom f choice through every conscious moment of your ex nstence It is improbable that you have grown mature without any idea as to what you can do with your own life or as to how utterly dependent your own life is on the power of your own decisions You have been taught sublect matter and skills but these were merely the means to help you achieve the final goal that of ruling and shaping your own life JOHN OLHA Assistant Principal Q 'A-f'ir'i w..'1,'j7 ' Taq? 'einer' Education is preparation for citizenship present and future The school alone has not determined what your preparation has been Your home your church and your community have had much do do with this important training Nevertheless the school has occupied a very strategic role in your prepara tion for responsible adulthood We congratulate you for a 'ob well done We ask you to grasp the future with open mind and heart and do all that is possible to build a better brighter tomorrow As the twig is bent so grows the tree May you always have the courage to carry out the basic virtues and ideals that are the foundation of a good life EDWIN A COX Superintendent Walt Whitman has written of a child that saw and experi enced many things durmg the course of a day In his poem Whitman tells how all these things became a part of this child for the day or a certain part of the day or for many years or stretching cycles of years When I think of the influence of our homes our churches our schools and our community I always remember the truth of this poem These influences are the twig benders ln our lives Your parents and the generations who have gone before you have worked hard and struggled mightily to give you a good community and a good environment Your influence for good right honesty and decency will in turn bend the little twigs that come after you. Thus grow the trees of democracy, re- sponsible citizenship, and God-fearing lives. J. OLIVER CARSON Assistant Superintendent
