OUR SCHOOL IN OUR TOWN We, the Seniors of Stratford High School, came from all corners of OUR TOWN. We live on the shores of Lord- ship or the hills of Putney, the busy sec- tions of Broadbridge Avenue or the banks of the Housatonic. We travel far or walk iust a short distance to come to this school. But all of us are equally proud of Stratford High and of OUR TOWN - Stratford, Connecticut. Our town is a town rich in historical tradition, dating back to 1639. Atop the steeple of one of the oldest churches of OUR TOWN sits a golden rooster, a weathervane which has been predicting the weather for 250 years and stands as a symbol of the heritage and spirit of OUR TOWN. It has seen the years pass beneath it and bears the scars of Revo- lutionary bullets as a mute testimonial to its age. Now we students pass by this historic landmark, bookladen, on our way to the high school. Our high school is in the center of OUR TOWN - a town which has the dis- tinction of housing the American Shakes- peare Festival Theatre and Academy. ln addition to that, we once harbored the greatest oyster industry in the nation. We also have our witch, who, tradition says, left her fingerprints on a rock on West Broad Street when she was dragged away to be hanged. We have our leg- endary romance which vies with Cinder- ella for the happy ending it brought to Glorianna Fulsom Sterling. We were the home of William Samuel Johnson, educa- tor and signer of the Delaration of ln- dependence, David Wooster, of Revolu- tionary fame, and Augusta Seaman, novelist.

THE CHANGING SCENE OUR TOWN was once a typical New England village with a central green. But the character of Stratford is changing - its landscape becoming un- familiar because of the new Throughway running through our backyard. Where for many years Moses Wheeler carried all freight, animals, and people back and forth across the Housatonic River, now four great bridges span the water, carrying cars, trains, and trucks speedily on their way. We have very modern housing developments where formerly white colonial houses stood. We have a movie theater, many well- stocked stores, a beautiful Town Hall, and several major industries as well as many smaller local man- ufacturing concerns. Yes, we are a metropolitan town now, only a scant sixty miles from New York City and a scanter twenty from New Haven. OUR TOWN is growing all the time, but it will probably always retain that small-town atmosphere, iust as our school will always have that close-knit feeling. As we look back through the pages of this year- book many years from now, we will fondly remember that wonderful feeling and cherish our days in Strat- ford High School. Population l670 Strong!
