Text from Pages 1 - 104 of the 1950 volume:

Stratford, sing thy praises of glory Filled with honor and loyalty O'er hill and dale. Stratford, ring forever the rally Of the thundering vict'ries Of thy dear name. Time ne'er will plunder The memories we hold; Oh! Alma Mater Oh! crimson and gold! Hail! Stratford, Alma Mater of Mothers Wave thy banner forever O, Stratford High. But hush! The curtain rises ... on a play that will not conclude with the closing curtain; for this drama goes on, translated from fantasy to reality, in the life of each who passes through the portals as a student for the final time, diploma in hand, ready to serve his role with distinction in the Drama of Life in the years ahead. Preliminary to the curtain's rising, we find ourselves comfortably seated, perusing the program of a drama which features a distinguished cast—the seniors of Stratford High, Class of 1950. As we await this very special performance, we dreamily gaze upon the curtain. There, in reverie, appears before us the setting of Stratford High. What memories it brings! Clubs, initiations, parties . . . happy moments all. Assemblies, the May Queen crowning, the variety show, the senior play . . . spectacles we shall long remember. Softly and plaintively the familiar strains of the Alma Mater emanates in the orchestral overture: With an abiding faith in God's beneficence, a deep devotion to our democratic ideals, a realization of your responsibility to your fellow man, and an inspiring confidence in the unique preparation bestowed upon you by our American educational system, may you fashion of your future that material which is the essence of the noblest drama—a worthy life. —MARY E. CASEY We, the class of 1950, dedicate our yearbook to MISS MARY CASEY in appreciation of the help, friendship, and advice she has given us since she assumed the position of junior English teacher and yearbook advisor. 3 LOS .STAFF pres ents THE CLASS 1950 DIRECTED BY THE ADMINISTRATORS............. The spotlight found us proudly donning our senior caps of red and gold, a distinctive note in every senior costume. Thus, having been fittingly regaled for the distinguished role of seniors, we eagerly looked forward to the first social event of our last year at S. H. S.—the Hallowe’en dance. From this pleasant affair we moved on through the calendar, to the accom- paniment of diligent study, until the ninth of December, when our talented class members proved themselves able thespians in their presentation of Dear Ruth. Finally the four capital events of senior year arrived to claim center stage. We gathered for our farewell dance, the Junior-Senior Prom, in May. The action gathered momentum, and June found us rapidly whirling into the major episodes of senior year: Baccalaureate, Senior Banquet, and the glorious climax, Graduation! Thus the curtain closed upon our happy life at Stratford High, leaving us pleasant memories and high ideals to follow steadfastly in our life ahead. 10 RITA F. Metal Shop College English Class Trigonometry Class No longer under classmen, the Juniors entered school in September knowing the com- ing year held many import- ant events which they eager- ly anticipated. The first Junior Class proj- ect was that of the class rings, which arrived in March, and gave everyone a feeling of pride that the Senior year would soon be here. The prom, held by both Junior and Senior classes, took place at the Ritz on May 12. For many Juniors, this first prom proved a great success. FRESHMAN CLASS Last September the Class of 1953 was as bewildered as all freshmen are when starting their high school years. Within a month, however, they had settled down and started to prepare slates of officers for the November elections. The officers elected have met regularly and laid plans for the beginning of a class treasury that, through the years, will grow and grow, like the well-known radio jack-pot. Important affairs for the Freshmen include the Freshman Party, the an- nual Freshman-Sophomore Dance, and the special Freshman Assembly, presented as a talent show. As each graduating class comes along, it is generally spoken of as The best class Stratford High School ever had. The Class of 1953 hopes to earn similar praise in the years to come. FRESHMAN CLASS OFFICERS Seated: Nora Norton (Treasurer). Norman Hermanson (President). Carol Walz (Secretary). Standing: Mr. E. Wordell (Advi- sor), Richard Kopsick (Vice-President) The sophomore class has had success this year in all their activi- ties. For the first time, a class assem- bly featuring sophomore talent was presented. In addition the class followed an annual tradition by sponsoring, with the freshmen class, the Bunny Hop in the gym. These important events combined with studies to make a very interesting and enjoyable year. 52 Savria MaLafrortt e- Encouraged by fine attend- ance, the football team fought its way through a hard sched- ule. Highlight of a tough sea- son was a scintillating 0-0 tie in the traditional Thanksgiving Day game with Milford. Good teamwork, determination, and a fighting spirit were displayed by the team in every game. Tompkins First Row: J. Forizs, F. Geter. L. Rinaldo, D. Russell (Co-Captain). Second Row: F. Last year's sguad reached the finals of the state-wide tournament; this year, hopes are high that we will win the tournament. Stalwarts Don Russell, Charles Slosar, Leroy Tompkins, Sonny Forizs, Don Barrett, and A1 Gould will make the team extremely hard to beat this year. First Row: A. Beauchemin. A. Tavaras, T. Luisi. J. This year's team is no exception for it has hopes of bringing seevral state laurels to Stratford again this year, as it has in the past. This team has many veterans whose experience make this one of the most success- ful teams in the history of Stratford. This year's team, coached by Mr. Puglise, included such outstanding seniors as Don Sorenson, Bob Wesche, Howie Rockwell, Jim Bacik, Tony Tavaras, and Ron Meuser—all strong reasons for the team's many victories. TRACK CROSS COUNTRY Kind of tired after running fifty yards, aren't you? Well, now you can appreciate the effort that is required to run in a cross country meet! The course is two and one-half miles long, and you can see why only the strongest and fastest boys of Stratford High School can participate. Our team has shown itself to good advantage this year, and we can be justly proud of its accomplishments. Seated: T. Luisi, K. Anderson. H. Rockwell (Captain), A. Beauchemin. Standing: G. Madden, T. Story, J. Sweeny, Mr. Puglise (Coach). TENNIS Exhorted by recent victo- ries, the tennis team showed great spirit this year. Since a high degree of dexterity is required to play tennis, we are assured that anyone representing Stratford is tops in tennis. Left to Right: Mr. Blake (Advisor), E. Krajcik, W. Pott, W. Pegushin, R. Byrnes. 60 BOWLING Set 'em up again, Zook- ie. This familiar call rings out whenever our bowling team takes to the alleys. Coached by Mr. Gregor, this team has been quite success- ful in recent years, ably con- tending with every challeng- ing team. First Row: R. Mannino. R. Kuchta, J. Mickolyzck, R. Onze. Second Row: K. Fowler. E. Kascak (Co-Captain), Mr. Gregor (Adviser), R. Cullen (Co-Captain), R. Chevrette. GOLF In most sports, the object of the game is to obtain a high score. In golf, however, it is necessary to keep the score low. Under the tute- lage of Mr. Flagg, this year's golf team has shown im- provement with each suc- ceeding engagement, record- ing — at times — scores that have been phenomenally low. These boys have proved themselves on the golf links time and time again, and it is reassuring to know that we have such a good team representing Stratford High School. Kneeling: N. Dedrick (Captain). R. Marchette. Standing: R. Hurley, L. Tuttle. R. Talbot. Mr. Flagg (Coach), E. Segala. 61 First Row: (4th from Left): Joan Horkheimer (Secretary). Ellen Crossley (President), Joan Stroomer (Vice-President), Prudence Kamens (Treasurer). Adviser: Miss Foland. GIRLS' SPORT CLUB The purpose of this club is to sponsor sports for girls. All activities are run on an intramural basis with points for participation and championships, which are used to determine awards. Activities sponsored by the club are: bowling, badminton, tennis, swimming, basketball, softball, and volleyball. Owing to the size of the club, it has been divided according to classes. Each spring the sport club, in cooperation with the National Honor Society, sponsors a Spring Festival, which is highlighted by the crowning of the May Queen, a girl elected by her class as the outstanding senior. BOYS' SPORT CLUB This club is organized with the intention of providing each boy with the opportunity of engaging in every sport. Mr. Penders guides the club, and each year he presents a diversified program of sports that will attract every sports- minded boy. Champions are crowned in every sport, and members of each winning team receive numerals.
