The bus, loaded with suitcases and weary Seniors arrived in Springfield about 6:00 a.m. After breakfast we loaded good ole M 624 and headed for the South. We arrived in Thayer, Missouri, for a brief rest period and then crossed the Arkansas line. From here we went to Memphis, Tennessee for lunch. From Memphis we went to Jackson, Mississippi, where we ate supper and spent the night. The King Edward, our hotel, also boasted of a very nice, heated swimming pool. There, we ridded ourselves of several of our aches and pains. We also picked up our tour director here. The ringing of the phone woke us Sunday morning. We put on our Sunday best and went to Piney Woods, a self supported Negro School, to listen to some Negro Spiritual singing. After this we rode to Mobile, Alabama, for lunch. Then, we went to Pensacola, Florida for a suntan. We all left with sunburns! Going from Mobile to Pensacola, we went through the Bankhead Tunnel, which goes under Mobile Bay. The tunnel was completely built and then dropped into this river. From Florida we went to Biloxi, Miss, for a stay in the Trade Winds Motel. We spent our time in the swimming pool, and out in the sun. Several of us enjoyed the sun too much with SUNBURNS! Monday was also spent here. We left Biloxi early in the morning the next day and headed for New Orleans. We checked into the De Ville Motel and went on a tour of the town. The Sugar Bowl Stadium. Tulane and Layola Universities, the garden district of Fountainbleau Drive the fabulous French Quarter, the Historic Cabildo Museum, and the famous St. Louis Cathedral were among the exciting things we saw. Burbon St.; this was a so-called Educational Tour. The boys and Mr. Jones, not being tired and need- ing a further understanding of Burbon St., took the girls to the motel and returned. We girls spent our time sleeping and the next day keeping the fellows awake. From New Orleans we went to Baton Rouge, the capitol of Louisiana. We toured the Capitol building and went to the 34th floor for a look at the Capitol grounds. We then went to Natchez, Miss, to see Stanton Hall, once a Southern Mansion. After that we went to see the site of the Battle of Vicksburg. Then on to Jackson, Miss, for our last night. We stayed at the Congress Airways Inn. We went to the movies and it cost each cab load $4.00--Even Mr. Jones's cab! ! We returned to Stover Thurs. night with Happy memories and good ole sunburns.
