B. Mitchell Mitch, Bus Driver Mrs. Spurgeon--Tour Director Mr. Walters--At Negro House Senior Trip They said, It couldn't be done. Well, we had our trip to New Orleans. We left Stover at 3:00 A.M., May 6 by school bus for Rolla where we met a chartered bus with Robbins Educational Tours. Thirty-eight seniors accom- panied by sponsors Jesse Walters and Evelyn Alpers, Tour director Mrs. Spurgeon, and bus driver Mitch. made the five day trip, with every minute bringing some new pleasure and scenery that will be remembered by all for years to come. We had a wonderful time. Leaving Rolla, Missouri we traveled through South Missouri, Northern Arkansas, lunched in Memphis, Tennessee, viewed Elvis's home, journeyed into Mississippi and arrived at Jackson, the state capital about 6:30 P.M. We stayed at beautiful Hotel Heidelberg, and enjoyed the town very much along with all the excitement that first night. Sunday morning, we visited Piney Woods School, a school for Negroes, built by students themselves. We remained for church services in their beautiful auditorium. Then Southward to Biloxi, Miss, and to the Trade Winds Hotel on the shore of the Gulf of Mexico. The afternoon and evening were spent swimming in the pool and in the Gulf, sunning on the beach, sailboating, sightseeing, bowling, dancing, at the movies and having fun. The third morning, we drove to New Orleans along the beautiful Gulf Coast, then had a three hour guided tour of the city--visiting Jackson Square, Old Jail and Museum, old French Apartments, Canal Street, Bourbon Street and French Quarter, Basin Street, Above-the-ground cemeteries, flower gardens, schools, colleges, Audubon Park and the Sugar Bowl. We stayed at the beautiful Motel Pan American. During the afternoon, we swam, shopped and relaxed. The night tour included Lake Ponchartrain Amusement Park--did we have fun—roller coasters, ferris wheels, fun houses, crazy houses. We then toured Bourbon Street by night, and the Morning Call Coffee Shop. Remember the Flood--and Marilyn's watch. The fourth day--Homeward bound--we visited the 35 story high state capital building at Baton Rouge, famous old anti-bellum homes at Natchez (a tour of Stanton Hall), the Vicksburg Battleground monuments, and that night slept at the Movie Gone With the Wind even though our rooms were at Hotel Vicksburg. The fifth day--a long bus ride home—everyone tired, lunch in Memphis, Reminiscences during the afternoon, supper in Rolla, Forrest Parker's drive to Stover. It's all over--We had fun--we'll remember it all for a long time--the many incidents, the pictures, the jokes, the pranks, the educational value of it all, the good sportsmanship, the trip. We wish to thank the tour director and bus driver for all their wonderful moments and helps along the way. Junior-Senior Banquet and Prom The Juniors at the annual banquet and prom planned a very entertaining program for the banquet. For weeks they had been working on the Prom getting it ready and it was a big success. They had painted a mural for the wall of a steamboat and the river and the plants and birds around it. It took lots of work but it was very beautiful. The Band, the painting, and the whole surroundings made the Prom a success. Thanks from the Seniors to the Juniors for the Prom and Banquet. Entertained by Junior sextet. At Prom many danced till it was over. Compliments of B-K CLEANERS, Versailles Donald Marriott Senior Elaine Tagtmeyer Snaps Remember When?
