1985-SG High School at (astll A new class entered Stoughton High, and our first set of officers boasted Brian Graber, president; Kim Barry, vice-president; Stacey Piselli, secretary; Julie Westcott, treasurer. The swim team defeated Canton for the first time. Hockomock League championships were claimed the field hockey and (boys) cross country teams. The first Halloween party was a gift by our class to the town of Stoughton and its kids. The class entry in the Spirit Hall competition was Toy Store. The class fundraiser was the sale of hooded SHS sweatshirts. The school musical was Hello. Dolly. Alternate Infinity, the science fiction club, made its debut at SHS, and the marching band participated in NESBA for the first time. On the world front, the Statue of Liberty cel- ebrated her 100th birthday. Great musical and charitable events were USA for Africa and Live Aid concerts to help the needy of the world. We were horrified by the Challenger accident bringing dis- aster to an entire crew of astronauts, including teacher Christa McAuliffe. AIDS became prom- inent as a fearful plague with the news that actor Rock Hudson had died from the disease. In Massachusetts, we were hit by Hurricane Gloria; many of us had no electricity for days. On a more positive note, the Celtics were NBA champs, and the Patriots made it to the Super Bowl. As our freshman year came to a close, we were excited about not being consider the little kids anymore. We arc fimny jwiny freshmen . . . boimdiess cmd subdmc . . . tfie Imagt of Eternity 6 mage, mt}, n A representation of any person or thing, sculptured, painted, or otherwise made visible. We all have different images of people. What some perceive as dumb jocks others perceive as talented athletes , others perceive the class nerd as the school scholar and still others think that the band geeks are gifted musicians and the dipsy cheerleaders are strong supporters . Our bittersweet years at Stoughton High unfold on the following pages, from our Freshman fears to our Senior successes. These images blend with reality in our journey towards maturity. Whatever our images are of ourselves and our peers, they will be left behind with our passage into the real world . The 1989 Stotonian is dedicated to preserving these images. ' What is the use of a book, ' thought Alice, ' without picture or conversations? ' We ' re no (onger Citt(e Tros fi . 1986-87: We begin our second year with a new president, Stacey Piselli, and a supporting crew of Kim Barry, vice-president; Cristen Her- lihy, secretary; and Julie Westcott, treasurer. The boys basketball and field hockey teams were league champs. Tina Rettman was named a Hock- omock League all-star in Cross- country. The second annual Hallow- een party was a success. The class Spirit Hall theme was the Wizard of Oz and, as a fundraiser, SHS sweatpants and sweatshirts were sold. The students vs. teachers basket- ball game was well attended. The musical for 1988 was Once Upon a Mattress. Student Council sponsored a lip-sync variety show. The nuclear meltdown in Chernobyl (Russia) scared the world. On the good side was a successful year in sports for Boston fans. The Red Sox made it to the World Series, the Bruins made it to the playoffs, and the Celtics were division champs. We were no longer underclassmen. We now looked forward to giving freshmen wrong direction to the mythical elevator, and we could now pick semester courses and get to keep (or discard) teachers after a half year. J We are siSy sidy so-phomores . . . Jxmxor bound 9 A picture has been said to be something between a thing and a thought. (Samuel Palmer) There are two sides to every coin. Students today at SHS are no exception. During the school day, our academic image reveals itself. But when that 2:09 bell rings, that image is put away and our imprisoned inner selves are are released with those of our friends, and the other side of our personality comes out. The camera captures forever the images of these alternate moments. The age demanded an image. (Ezra Pound) Wow! llndcrdassmm at (ast Our junior prom was held on Friday, May 13, 1988. Despite the fearful date, we felt anything but unlucky as we danced to the theme Faithfully at Lantana ' s. Crowned as king was Steve Tierney. The queen, Stacey Piselli, was also class president. Here fellow officers included Julie Westcott, treasurer; Jennifer Crosscup, treasurer; and Cristen Herlihy, secretary. Juniors named as MVP ' s for their sports were Cris Herlihy, gymnastics; Jon Freeman, wrestling; Chris Melendy, golf The swim team won the state mixed-sex championsh ip and the football field got lights! The class chalked up another success with its third annual Halloween party. Class theme for Spirit Hall was Medieval Castle. We did the normal junior aaivities, agonized over PSAT ' s and SAT ' s, wore our class rings (finally) and were allowed to join National Honor So- ciety. Many panicipated in the Intramural Writing Contest; national nominees were Beth Hottinger and Brian Graber. Class fundraiser involved the selling of keychains. The old Winter Dance was joined by the new Ha- waiian dance. The annual musical, Guys and Dolls, starred Jim Lewin in a leading role, with supporting role by Kevin Mischley and Kristina Seferian. The Dow Jones Industrial stock average dropped a record 508 points between October 12-19. At the same time, a 24-day NFL strike ended with viaory for the owners. AIDS had killed nearly 25,000 people since it made its appearance just a few years before, and was proclaimed Public Health Enemy 1. The news was filled with Iran-Contra hearings, and Oliver North was definitely the name on everyone ' s lips. We were concerned with what was happening in the real world but mainly we were waiting for the day we were Seniors and the only disease we wanted was called Senioritis. t 12 We are jofty jo(ty Jimiors ♦ ♦ ♦ 13 By means of an image, we are often able to hold on to our long lost belongings. (Colette) Years from now when our years at SHS are just fond memories and friendships have faded like old photographs, the STOTONIAN will preserve the images of the Class of ' 89, a class which accepted many challenges, winning numerous success, together with a few defeats. Although we cannot stay together forever, we will remain forever in spirit through this latest edition of the Stoughton High yearbook. Each class is unique and leaves its imprint on the high school. We would like to be remembered at Stoughton High as the class that lived and laughed. ... give the image of what we actually see, forgetting everything that has been before our time. The team ' s final record of 34 (wins), 42 (losses) was greatly helped by the ever-important pack. MVP Adam Kempner led the pack the entire season. Following closely in his footsteps was Doug Frisoli, a very consistent runner. Saurin Fatal turned out to be a freshman sensation, and ended up as the team ' s 3 rurmer. Finishing 4-7 in the pack were John Lydstone, Jeff Kempner, Dave Grant, and Sean Houghton. Seniors who will be missed next year are Jeff Kempner, Dave Grant, and Justin O ' Leary. In the League Meet, they finished 5th overall, managing to beat Canton, to whom they lost by two points during the season. During the season, the team travelled to Franklin Park three times for the Catholic Memorial Invitational, the State Track Coaches Invitational, and the Eastern Mass. Trials. Throughout the season, Tina Rettman was the number one rimner for the team. As captain, she helped Coach Lupica promote unity and team motivation, Tina won four meets and finished in the top five in the other four league meets. In the League Meet, she finished 13th overall and was named team MVP. Jen DeLuca was awarded the Most Improved plaque. She began the season as the 5 runner and finished as the 2 runner. Cheryl Lydstone was awarded the Coach ' s award for extraordinary charaaer. Awards were also given to four runners for their top performances at the grade level. Rettman and McGarry won the senior and junior awards, respeaively, Katie Leahy and Amee Harrison, won the sophomore and freshmen awards. Led by captains Terry Stead, John Freeman, and (league all-star) Matt McKinnon, the Black Knights played a competitive, aggressive, and exciting brand of football that resulted in three wins. On opening night the Black Knights defeated Mas- conomet Regional 35-7 behind Mike Lee ' s outstanding running. Other wins include a triumph over Sharon 25- 12 with Dave Sheppard showing excellent leadership at the quarterback position, and a win over Mansfield 23-7 as John Pitta proved to be a dynamic offensive force. All the team members contributed a great deal to what coaches Ashley and Cotter consider a successful season mainly due to the special leadership by senior The junior varsity team, led by coaches Gammell and Mongiat collected only two wins but played well in defeat. The future looks promising based on the per- formances of standouts Keith Callahan and Matt Syrek. Coach Campbell ' s freshman squad garnered only one win but learned a great deal about high school football. Kirk Fredericks, Chris Kane, and Elvin Morales con- tributed with fine first year performances. Dave Sheppard (11) lines up behind center Marc Leger (66) and ofTensivc lineman Ryan Love (71), John Freeman ( 1), and Mark Mischley (33). No one thought they ' d be able to do it, having lost their leading goal scorer from the previous year. By working hard, setting aims high, and putting out great effort, they did it with a great team effort. For the sixth consecutive year, they team qualified for the state tourney. They won their first game against Hingham 2-0, but lost the second to Dennis- Yarmouth in overtime 2- 1. Leading scorer was all-star junior Colleen O ' Connell (13 goals, 8 assists) followed by Stacey Beaton, another junior (12 goals, 2 assists). Goalie Kim Bernard (all-star as well as team MVP) recorded 10 shutouts during the season. An- other all-star, Paula Lorenz, helped control the defensive end of the field. Rhonda Drey was the leading scorer for the JV team. Chris Golden won the JV MVP award and served as back-up goalie for the varsity. The seniors on the ' 89 team wish coach Dan Mark and assistant coach Bernice Blye much love and thanlcs for making the past four years memorable. The seven wins were the most ever in a season. Ten different athletes qualified for post-season action at the Mass. South Sec- tional Swimming and Diving Championships. New school records were set by Sandi Farnham in the 2()()-yd. individual medley, by Tracy Ferrazzi in the l()()-yd. freestyle, and by Maryrose Fahey in the l()()-yd. breaststroke. In the state finals. Sheila Chipman advanced furthest of all Stoughton athletes, finally placed 1 4th among all divers in the state. At the end of the season, Tracy Ferrazzi was selected by her teammates as MVP. Sheila Chipman was named by conference coaches as a Southern Conference all-star. Coach Lucio Santos 46 SOCCER The varsity soccer team, for the second straight year, finished with a less-than-admirable record. Despite the outstanding efforts of Hockomock League all-star John Gillis and the rest of the sturdy defense, success wasn ' t achieved often. Coach Lucio Santos and the boys on the team had higher hopes for themselves, but unfor- tunately those hopes never materialized. How- ever, captains Scott Boland and Roy Fraga were leaders in maintaining an upbeat approach to the season. On a more positive note, the junior varsity team fared very well this season, finishing with a 10- 4-1 record and 2nd place finish in their division. First year coach Alex Silva deserves much credit for the team ' s accomplishments. Capt. Chris Melendy was MVP and was named a member of the all-star team. Seniors Bob King, Yong Su Kim, and Scott Dykeman also contributed greatly in bringing viaory to the team. Sophomores Steve Planeta, Dan Berman, and Dave Kovner won several matches against tough opponents. Junior Dana Rakvica, round- ing out the squad, had an excellent record for the (Chuck) Vuytowecz — coached group. Capt. Vicki Douvale kept the girls in high spirits. Goalie Kerry Dunn played well for the Knight hooters in her first year in goal. The team will sorely miss four-year veteran senior Evelyn Large next year. However, the members of the squad intend to continue next year, still seeking a season of wins for SHS girls soccer. Mike Brilliant led a very small, inexperienced squad through a difficult Hockomock and non-league schedule. Despite the overall record, the team played most opponents very tough. Making significant contributions throughout the season were seniors Tony Blakely, Rob Dorney, Rob Florio, and Terry Stead. Underclassmen gained valuable game expe- rience. Junior Ryan Love emerged as an inside strength, while Jerome Williams and George McDaniel (a sophomore) displayed promise for next year for the John Douglas-coached squad. Love was named team MVP. The team was led by seniors John Freeman and Shawn Silva, together with junior Paul Gates, who placed fourth in the sectionals in the 189-lb. class. After a slow beginning, the grapplers got on the right track and finished strong. The Knights had to tangle with some tough competition in the league, particularly Franklin and Foxboro. Four wrestlers qualified for the South Shore Sectionals: Silva, Matt Holt, Darren Stokes, and Gates. The outlook for next season is very prom- ising. The girls varsity basketball team finished the 1988-89 season with a record of 3-17. Co- captains Kerry Tsinzo and Paula Lorenz led a relatively inexperienced team of players through a rough season. Each member of the team made substantial contributions in keeping the team competitive. Leading scorer and MVP of this year ' s team was junior forward Mary Beth Gorman. An- other junior, Colleen O ' Connell, was a strong faaor with her rapid dribbling and shooting technique. Although this year ' s team suffered from a lack of experienced players, the prospect looks promising for the future with some superb combinations on the horizon. i JUNIOR VARSITY: (Front) Tara Peck, Shari Mussman, Kris Golden, Tamar Berkowitz, Cheryl UUano. Chris Brady, who has been involved in competitive swimming tor many years, was the team ' s coach. Though the team was not very powerful in its first season, they learned their events well and competed respectfully. Individual accomplishments were chalked up by captain Stephen Tierney (MVP), Brian Schwartz, and Shawn Scannel. Other achieve- ments were scored by freshmen Don Lewin, Bill Seaver, and Dave Kell. Divers Barry Carter and Mike Quasha rounded out the squad. Frosh attempts waterskung without a boat. BOYS SWIMMING 88-89: (Fronc) Coach Chris Brady. David KeU. Capt, Stephen Ticmcy. Bill Seaver. Unfortunately, the squad was plagued with injuries throughout the season, and ended with an 0-12 record. Sheila Chipman, Cristen Herlihy, Michelle Collins, and Jen Dennehy were the all-around competitors this year. Lisa Mallahan coached the team for her fourth season. Jane Gitto was chosen MVP, competing in three events. The three seniors on the squad (Chipman, Herlihy, and Nicole D ' Angelico) served as team captains. YMNASTICS ' 89; (Front) Michelle Collins. The team managed to split its six-meet season evenly winning over Mansfield (62-24), Franklin (46-40), and Canton (59-27), losing to North Attleboro (53-33), King Phillip (55-31) and Foxboro (67-19). OTHER MEETS: League Championship, SHS 4th out of 7; State Relays, Class B, SHS 8th out of 30; E. Mass Championship, Class B, 9th out of 30; All-State Meet, 15th out of 30. GIRL5 TRACK The girls achieved an overall season record of 2-5, together with a 5th place finish in the Hockomock League Meet. Team leadership was provided by captains Tina Rettman, Jennifer McGarry, and Jackie Magner. Magner was named team MVP. The Most Improved Award went to Jennifer Boushell. Eastern Mass. GIRLS TENNIS The girls tennis team ended a successful sea- son with a 9-7 record, only one win away from a tournament spot. A large squad of 17 par- ticipants worked under the tutelage of coach Russ Clough. Senior Lauren Berman was joined as co- captain by junior Urmila Bajpai, who will also serve as captain next year along with Pam Berler. Urmila was also named team MVP for the season. Th e team seemed to have an ability to win the close ones, and prospects for the future are very bright. The immediate goal, according to Clough, is to get into the tournament, and build from there. Arbit will be captain next year, together with Brian Smit h, of a team which seems to have a lot of potential. Basically a young team, the group concentrated on fundamentals, strategy, and concepts, managing to earn a 6-10 record in a learning year. Brendan Ellis was team MVP. Matt Holt ' 91 was at first singles, and had a record of 4-9, respectable for a young player when the strong competition he had to face is considered. Ellis was second singles, and Brian Smith at third singles. Arbit and Todd Cohen ' 91 played first doubles and chalked up a 10-3 record; second doubles, consisting of Kilgoar and Nelson Hermanageldo, split at 3-3. There ' s an old poster on one of the classroom walls which reads: What if we declared war and no one came? In the same way, we can say, What if a school were opened and no one came? School is not a building. It is administration, faculty, coaches, advisors, custodians, kitchen personnel, librarians, aides, subs, and, above all, it is students! Students take a lot of pleasure in saying, We ' re important! Without us, there would be no sense in having school. Before, we get too blown away with our importance, just think that if students came, but no one else did, there would be no school. And — if everyone came — and nothing was going on, there would be no school ' . By everything, we mean ever3ahing: Not just classrooms, but classes, filled with all kinds of courses, including the arts, the sciences, the industrial and domestic arts, the business arts, the creative arts AND — sports and dubs and student government AND — time and opportunity to make and to keep friends for now and forever. In short, everything that makes for a complete scholastic life! They ' re all shown in this book . . . and that ' s why we dedicate this book to STUDENT LIFE AT STOUGHTON HIGH, the ingredient which makes coming to this school worthwhile . . . we pay tribute to all of them who make this possible . . . we salute all of us who take advantage of it . . . (Clockwise) Charlene Hea- ly, Carol Tennenbaum, Jac- qui Buote. Subs, aides . . . Part of our life SEMI-FINALISTS: Doug Frisoli, Stacy Wagner, Paul Jondro The 15th Annual Intramural Writing Com- petition saw a record-breaking number of jun- iors entered. The local competition is similar to that sponsored by the National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE) which is open to juniors in high schools throughout the country. In the competition, each entrant must write for an hour on a topic he or she has not seen before. In addition to this impromptu writing, the student must complete the entry with a sample of his or her best writing which can be an essay, a short story, poetry, or drama. The local entries are judged by members of the English Department. The judges select two NOMINEES who then compete against nom- inees from other high schools in Massachusetts in the same manner: submitting an entry con- sisting of another impromptu essay and a sam- ple of best writing. In 1989, the nominees were Kathy Fidler and Cinda Lavely; in 1988, the nominees were Brian Graber and Beth Hottinger. HONORABLE MENTION: (Fiwil) Pm S«law. Joi GrifTith, Lnlic Catiofiln. Unfortunately, the time has come. We, the Class of 1989, have come a long way. Our four years at SHS have brought us together. Without the support of fellow classmates and faculty, we would not have been a success. We have worked together on various events such as fundraisers, our annual Halloween parties, and, of course, our victorious spirit week senior year. We have supported each other through good times and bad. As a class, we have proven to be exceptional not only in academics, but also in athletics. I would like to thank all of the students who have served as class officers these four years. On behalf of the Class of 1989, I would like to thank our advisors, Mrs. Karen McSweeney and Mrs. Debra McHugh- Conrad, for all of their dedication and support. It has been my privilege and pleasure to have served as your senior class president. The experience will stay with me always. Our four short years with you can be summed up in one expression of the times, AWESOME! A look back over these past four years brings to mind alJ of our accom- plishments: You leave SHS with rwo new traditions — the Halloween Parry which began in your Freshman Year and successfully grew each year and the establishment of the King ' s Coun at the proms, (Steve Tierney we will forever remember you as SHS ' s first King ) You leave a legacy of successful fund raisers, from sweatshirts and pants to leeshirts and keychains and, last but nut least, MatM ' s. (We sold so many M M s that the Mars Company has approached us to become saleswomen.) Because of all of these successful endeavors, you had a treasury that was large enough to provide you with a fantastic Senior Prom and Class Trip at over a 50 reduction in cost and two class gifts, one in your Junior Year (a Bulletin Display Case for the Senior Hall) and a new Trophy Case given on Class Night and must imponantly four years of representing your school wherever yuu went with PRIDE AND CLASS Hopefully, some of the real life skills that we have taught you through fund raising, activity planning, and idea storming will be beneficial to you as you continue to become good citizens.
