Keagan ' s nomination ui Robert Bork to the Supreme Court, ending a long debate. President and Mrs. Ronald Reagan greeted Pope Paul II when he arrived in Miami to begin a nine-city tour of the United States. The Dow Jones industrial stock average dropped 508 points, the largest in history on Monday, Oct. 12-19. Black Monday stripped $500 billion from the market value of U.S. securities. Marine Col. Lt. Col Oliver North became a celebrity as he testified before the Iran-Contra hearings in Washington. Television evangelists Jim and Tammy Faye Bakker said farewell to the PTL ministry in March as a result of publicity about scandal which broke into the media.
