DEDICATION The ' 79 STOTONIAN is dedicated to Dr. Peter J. Sperandio, who served as Principal of Stoughton High School from 1 966-79. TO THE CLASS OF 1979: Congratulations to you on your graduation. The diploma which you received is significant. More importantly, however, was your involvement in the educational experiences provided at Stoughton High School. These experiences have certainly had an effect upon you. We hope that you have developed social values so that you will not only know yourselves better as individuals but will be more understanding and considerate of others. By the time you will have received your yearbooks I will be retired. The many years I have spent with students have been very enjoyable for me. Of course there have been some problems but we were able to resolve most of them. That is the way of life. I hope that I have, in some small measure, contributed to your future happiness. To all of you, my personal best wishes for success, enjoyment and the attainment of your personal goals. Sincerely, Peter J. Sperandio, Ed.D. Principal PJS:db A major change in administration took place at Stoughton High School on Feb. 23. On that date, Dr. Peter Sperandio, who had been principal at SHS since April, 1966 retired. Mr. Albert Twomey, administrative assistant for school community relations, was named interim principal. Dr. Sperandio has been principal for 1 3 years, a length of time which established him as holding the office for the second longest period among SHS principals to date. During his term as head of the school, many changes took place, primarily an increase in the student body from 1200 to nearly 2000, and from 50 faculty members to well over 1 00. As principal, he was part of the evaluation of 1969, following which Stoughton High received full accreditation for ten years, the maximum period permitted. He was also principal in 1969 when SHS celebrated its centennial and was the author of a pageant performed at that time. Other changes were the expansion into the D and E Buildings, the changes in the curriculum to reflect greater choice through greater electives. In other areas he had to contend with moments of stress, arising from change, including some non-violent disobedience of existing codes of student conduct and some violent confrontations resulting from abolition of previously established smoking areas. Commons, with its built-in problems resulting from overcrowding, came into being during his term of office. None of these were of his making, but as principal he had to cope with them. Despite these stresses and strains, Dr. Sperandio will probably prefer to look back to many outstanding accomplish- ments by students entrusted to him. In the 1967 STOTONIAN, dedicated to him, tribute was paid to his guidance and friendship. Students in the Class of 1 979, who have been at Stoughton High during the last four years of Dr. Sperandio ' s tenure echo these sentiments and wish him well in his years of retirement. We express our gratitude for his many years of dedicated service to education. 28
