Film Club Laurel and Hardy. ..W.C.Fields ... These are a few of the many stars featured by the Stoughton High Film Club, whose purpose is to let people see some of these interesting old films. At the same time the film club hopes to provide an alternative for students with early outs. Mr. Robert Kellogg (Math) advises the club, which meets every Wednesday in D- 207. Officers are Mike Coffin, president, Greg Stenstrom, secretary; and Kevin Spinalee, treasurer. Though no dues structure has been set up as yet, the money that will be collected will go to renting films and purchasing group tickets for films. Right now the members of the club just watch the films. One big problem, Mr. Kellogg says, is that the club can ' t get the films it wants and has to settle for third choices. This is because the films are free and orders come late or are taken by paying customers. According to Mr. Kellogg, the club welcomes either full time members who take an active part or associate members who just watch the films. Suggestions on films to be shown are always welcome, he adds. Karen Walsh ' 80 Chess Club Peter Howe ' 79 has been elected president of the Stoughton High Chess Club. Peter, who is current team captain, recently came in sixth in the South Shore Inter-Scholastic Individuals Tournament. The Tournament is made up of the two top players of each school in the league. MAY. 1977 SHS KNIGHT Stoughton Beauties Oh, yes, we come in all combinations. Label us according to your own unique classification. Some are pretty; other are ugly. Still others we label fair, homely, and beautiful. We all try to be decent in our appearance even if we lack cosmetic surgery. Some of us get up at the crack of dawn, and begin to prepare for our facial operation. We start with a pure, clean, innocent face. That ' s the one we try to avoid, better known as ours. Some of us tend to tape a paperbag over our mirrors, for fear of the ultimate thrill of having to participate in the creature feature tryouts. We move out from the realistic world, turning the pages ot a Glamour magazine. We believe that we are that cover girl with the perfect teeth and nice smile. Deep in our hearts, we know we have a dentist appointment that could lead to mouth malfunction. Our combinations vary from glamourous girl to that unfashion- able broad. Stamped by company (boys ' ) labels, we are passed through group inspection. They say some of us have it and some of us don ' t. Which one do we qu alify for? Both. Stoughton High girls are the perfect example. Some of us need detailed work on how to apply the cover girl image. To make sure we capture the essence of it all, we flip the pages for the directions and try to follow each word step by step. We began to form an imaginary look at ourselves, believing we come close to a cover girl image. Some boys think it ' s passable. There are so many varieties. It ' s like having a split personality. During our observation of others, we notice how different we look from them. It ' s an inconvenient multi-pack of insecure feelings. The girl who wishes to be glamorous goes home and paints herself as if Halloween was an everyday event. She who prefers to wear nothing relating to her face may feel great, health-wise, but she lucks out on What are you doing tonight? or Do you want to go to the movies? While the other girls are swamped by the attracted eye of a male. Then there ' s always the one caught in the middle of it all. She usually ends up envying both sides of the matter. Here ' s where the contest begins. You ' ll notice how great the competition is, when its Glamours against the Healthy Homely. Naturally Glamour wins. She is the most popular and best liked. But how does she score as an individual? We know how the story goes from this point. The sad Healthy Homely puts herself down and turns on to a magazine image. The wrong thing to do is to make a switch your appearance decision. If you feel you ' re really unbearable and want to go out for dog chow commercials treat yourself to a specialist: you. yourself. Make a list of what you like and don ' t like, then work with it. You ' re bound to look better. And for those of you, who are satisfied with what you have and thankful like me, you will find there is no contest because you are a winner. An Ex-Cover Girl PAGE 5 In Response 4?? OPU U)ILL G€T Ai AV F0tOA IT ALL f ft In my opinion whoever wrote the article on jocks should have had the guts and common decency to sign his her name. In the first place, no one person has the right to put down another group unless that person is above criticism. The point that person tries to make is that once jocks leave the school they are just another face in the crowd. Well, once any person leaves this school he she is just another face in the crowd also. It does not matter if you ' re a jock, freak, drama person, or a member of any other group. The point I am trying to make is directed to the person who wrote the article. I ask you, what gives you the right to criticize others and give others advice? In my opinion you are high on yourself, much more high than any jocks I know. I feel sorry for you because in my opinion you are suffering from a serious in- feriority complex. You must put down others and give them ad- vice to make yourself look bigger. Well, this may lead to a problem for you in the future and I hope you can control it. Also I would like to know what the must-have-cool walk looks like, and also the sprint leg stand. If you have any self pride and guts you will give those of us who are less fortunate than you in knowing about these matters a demonstration of how to act cool lik6 3 jock I hope this puts an end to the put down another group type of column because it is not worth the trouble it causes. MAY, 1977 SHS KNIGHT PAGE 7 New Dean • • Required Course . . Credit Count Sophs Must Now Take Career Course More Credits Needed For Graduation To make better use of school and education and to prepare Stoughton High Students for life after high school, Dr. Guy A. Tardanico, Coordinator of Occupational Education, has proposed a new career and occupation education program. The program, approved by the School Committee, will go into effect in September. The new sequential program will begin the sophomore year and will be required of all students. The sophomores must take a one- semester course for two periods per week. Dr. Tardanico says, The instructional content of this course is developed around the need for students to be made cognizant of their options and opportunities in the World of Work. Occupational testing, occupational guidance and the delib- erate use of an occupational resource center will provide the student with knowledge of self as well as providing the basis for making informed, natural choices relative to career goals and aspirations. In the nth grade the program will become optional. The student may choose the second level if he so desires. The privilege of leaving school to work will only be permitted in special cases to students, such as those who already have jobs related to their career objectives, chosen in the previous year ' s program. In the senior year, the course will again be optional. The requirements of this level would be to maintain a career-related job for which the student would be excused at 12:30. Sponsors of the new courses hope they will allow the student to choose a career in high school and therefore provide him her with the necessary background for it. The student would then be able to center all of his other courses around his career goal. If successful, the course would provide a solid basis for par- ticipating students to experiment and determine a career, Dr. Tardanico concluded. Lynda Lebiedz ' 77 Name Twomey To New Job, Dean of Students If you ' re a freshman this year, you can expect to have to earn 95 credits for graduation — 15 more than what ' s now needed. If you ' re a sophomore, you ' ll need 88, and if you ' re a junior, you ' ll need only two more, 82. If you are irked by the increase, consider the class of 1981, who will need 100 credits. The credit requirement increase was proposed to the School Committee by Dr. Sperandio and approved on March 17. The new plan will hopefully curb absenteeism from classes, which is partially due to a student ' s ability to fail four or five classes during four years, and still graduate. Under the new plan, Dr. Sperandio says a student can fail only two or three courses, which will hopefully cause students to realize that they can no longer afford to fail courses. Any nervousness over the increase should be eased. Dr. Sperandio says, because the increase in the credit requirement is proportional to the increase in the work requirements and their credit value. A course will receive a credit for each period it meets. For example, gym will receive two credits instead of one. If a student can ' t graduate, it ' s not because he can ' t. It ' s because he won ' t. The students only want to pass enough to get by. Mr. Albert J. Twomey has been named as Dean of Students at Stoughton High. This is a new position. Mr. Twomey, known as Tuck during his playing and coaching days at Stoughton High, is presently assistant principal of the junior high. As Dean of Students he will be respon- sible for supervising programs at the high school involving security and discipline. Among some of the things which affect students at the high school will be his role in discipline and attendance of students. Mr. Twomey will also have responsibility in the area of student governance and building security. Tuck Twomey, a graduate of SHS in 1939, was considered one of the top athletes who graduated from the school. He was a four-letter man, starring in all sports. Following graduation, he starred at Boston College. A stay with the Pittsburgh Steelers of the NFL was followed by his appointment to the SHS faculty of the high school. For ten years Coach Twomey was one of the winningest coaches in high school football, as his teams compiled enviable records. When he stepped down as coach, he was named Director of Athletics in which position he served until he went to the junior high a little less than a decade ago. C. Boyatzis ' 77 Columbia Contest Knight Stoughton High ' s newspaper, The Knight, won first place honors for the third consecutive year in the Columbia Scholastic Journalism Contest, considered the most prestigious award for scholastic journalism in the country. Every issue of the paper must be sub- mitted and is graded and given a specific number of points on every aspect of writing, editing, publishing and produc- tion. The highest number of points is 1,000 and The Knight was awarded 902. The issues judged were published from January through December, 1976. Editors were Sally Valadao ' 77 and Alisa Aronson ' 78. Tom Uniacke ' 77 Newly elected Student Council officers include (seated) Roseanne Zucco ' 79, corresponding secretary; Gail Klim ' 79, recording secretary; Mark Conti ' 78, vice- president: Mary Savino ' 78, treasurer; (standing) Mario Teixeira ' 78, president; Mr. Anthony Sarno, advisor.
