PAGE 12 SHS KNIGHT MAY, 1977 Reviewing Stand Features and Fancies Movie Scenes Bound for Glory Woody Guthrie was one of America ' s greatest folk song composers. His songs powerfully captured the feeling of America during the Depression of the 1930 ' s. His songs such as This Land is Your Land are familiar to many Americans, yet most are unaware of what he or his life was Uke. This may soon change as a result of the movie Bound for Glory. Based on Guthrie ' s autobiography of the same name, it stars David ( Kung-Fu ) Carradine and was directed by Hal Ashby. The movie is not so much a picture of Guthrie as it is a picture of the Depression. The Dustbowl of the Midwest, the hobo jungles, soup kitchens, and migrant labor camps are all shown as parts of the desperate period in American history that Guthrie grew out of and sang about. Forced to leave his home in the dried-out town of Pampa, Texas, Guthrie hitchhikes his way to California where he hopes to find work and send for his wife and two children whom he left in Pampa. He thinks that California will be a Garden of Eden, but when he gets there he is disillusioned and angered by the migrant labor camps where thousands of hungry men, women and children wait pitifully for work that will give them a few pennies a day. He becomes involved with attempting to organize unions, and as he becomes more famous he continues to write and sing songs that praise the working man, advocate unionism, and condemn the labor bosses and politicans. Carradine is excellent as the witty, kindhearted Guthrie. Because he doesn ' t try to imitate Woody ' s singing, he avoids those inevitable comparisons, and his own singing suits Woody ' s music and the movie perfectly. Melinda Dillon is also good as Woody ' s troubled wife. Bound for Glory doesn ' t concentrate much on Woody ' s family life; it is well known that he was an irresponsible father and husband, often inclined to taking spur of the moment trips without telling anyone where he was going. Instead, the movie concentrates on his spirit, his philosophy and his songs. He was a man who believed in the common man, and he was always willing to stand up for his principles. The movie succeeds in showing this important aspect of his personality, but moreoever it succeeds in showing the experiences that inspired his music. Alisa Aronson 78 A Star Is Born A movie is a movie is a movie is a movie. artificial, it is a moving story of one love that is shared by two. Chris Kristofferson plays the role of a burnt-out rock star (John Norman Howard) who, tired of fame and fortune, attempts to break the monotony and breaks a few bones in the process. Esther Hauffman, played by Barbara Streisand, is a rising star with extraordinary talent. It is in a bar one evening, while performing in front of many people, that Esther ' s career as a singer begins. Hearing her sing, Johnny is convinced that her future is promising, and he arranges for a record- ing session. Like their love, Esther ' s glory is shared by two with one exception. Johnny does not want her to be treated like he was and strikes out at everyone, causing Esther great pain. During this time, he undergoes a radical change. He begins to compose quiet songs with more meaningful lyrics. One such song is With One More Look At You, which he wrote especially for Esther a short time before his tragic death. Throughout the film, the musical theme helps to support the idea of the phony world of a star. Yet, it also supports the theme of the great joy received from performing in front of people and knowing that they love you. This is revealed by Barbara ' s enthusiasm and the love that the viewer feels when she sings her songs. The acting on everyone ' s part was ex- cellent and the people were well suited for their parts. I feel that Barbara supported This is how I felt until I viewed A Star Is Progressive Jazz is the new sound on the scene and it is becoming quite popular with a large number of rock and soul music listeners. Progressive Jazz and Jazz Rock are the two new types of Jazz that have been changed, altered and modified. Pro- gressive Jazz introduces a more compli- cated soynd with many different patterns within a song. Jazz Rock blends the two styles together eliminating the lyrics replacing them with instrumental solos. The performers in this area of music are the best quality musicians in America. Such musicians as Stanley Clarke on bass (both electric and acoustic) and Chick Corea on all types of keyboards lead a group of talented musicians just starting to get recognition. George Benson, the Jazz guitarist of the year had one of the most popular and best selling albums in America this year called Brezin. This album and many other fine musicians the film and complemented Chris on the screen. I was touched by the film and cried intensely during the scene after Johnny ' s death when Esther hears him singing and goes running downstairs, only to find a tape recorder playing. She begins to sob incessantly and rips the tape out of the recorder while saying, You lied to me... You ' re a God-damn liar John Nor- man. After this violent display of emotion she says, I ' m sorry Johnny; they ' re were just so many things I wanted to tell you. That ' s what hit me the most. Another scene which is packed with emotion is after Esther and John have a fight. She keeps saying she hates him and hitting him, while he hugs her and tells her he loves her. To me, this showed his in- tense love for her. After seeing the movie twice, I can better understand the meaning of the film, the way each character acted, and why it began in the way it did. However, I think that I would change the beginning slightly because most people have had difficulty getting oriented. Another objection I have is the language in the film. It is not the vulgarity that bothered me, but rather the fact that it took away from the ef- fectiveness of the film. On the other hand, it did underline Johnny ' s personality and life style. If it weren ' t for the fact that I would cry so much, I would go to see the movie a lot more. I also greatly enjoyed the music in the film and especially love the theme song Evergreen. Carolyn Benson ' 79 arriving on the scene have helped Jazz make a comeback with the real listeners of music, the youth and young adults. A lot of the modern Jazz is all-electric. Every type of instrument is being turned electric like the violin which is played very well by Jean-Lu-Ponty. Eddie Harris plays an electric saxophone; even drums have been turned electric. This all creates a new and different type of sound that has caught on with some but it will take a long time to get a good pro- portion of Rock and Soul listeners. But then again this music isn ' t for everybody. It ' s for those who enjoy getting into the music we hear and enjoying the crafts- manship that the musician displays. The type of sound he produces and the things he can do are remarkable. He is taking the listener to a place he ' s never been and hoping he enjoys the ride to a new type of music. MAY, 1977 SHS KNIGHT PAGE 13 Mrs. Kathryn Warren before and after. Made-up photo by Mr. F.E. Maioli; inset by Barbara Carlsen. A Witch? Mr. Joseph Chamberlain poses before and after. (Remarks about which is which not accepted.) Guess who? Is it the Mona Lisa and Rip Van Winkle? Would you believe Mrs. Kathryn Warren and Mr. Joseph Cham- berlain? Their true spirits appeared in the Suspense and Horror classes through the talents of Brian Gardner, a 1974 Stoughton High graduate. Brian, a self-taught make-up artist, made it possible for students to call Mrs. Warren a real witch and Mr. Chamberlain a big werewolf. When asked to comment on Brian ' s work, Mrs. Warren ' s blue lips smiled and im- mediately responded, People tell me I look just like my father. As for Mr. Chamberlain, he feels Brian ' s work is excellent. He did have a good start with my face, though! Brian ' s interests as a makeup artist stems back to the eighth grade when his speech teacher demonstrated makeup techniques. Throughout high school Brian did makeup for the drama department productions excluding the drama festivals. Faithfully, since graduation, Brian has volunteered his time and services to SHS. At the age of 19, Brian started his own business making prosthetics. (A plastic formed into various shaped noses, ears, mouths, etc.) Brian explains, I ' m one of the few people today who can mix their own pancake makeup. Working for two years at the Makeup Center in Boston, he did makeup for operas and plays such as Montezuma. You ' ll find very few makeup artists who aren ' t licensed hairdressers, Brian points out. He is also a graduate of LeBaron ' s hairdresser school in Brockton. Presently, Brian is working at Suzie ' s Beauty Shop in Stoughton. Brian works frequently for Channel 4 doing makeup for Community Auditions. The public would be surprised if they knew how much makeup some television celebrities need to cover up wrinkles or a hangover, Brian states. Among his hobbies are clay sculpturing, oil painting, and processing black and white photos. Brian ' s plans for the future are undecided. He may work in New York for three years under an apprenticeship program, vital in order to be employed in the makeup artist field.
