PRINCIPAL The Qass of 1964 wishes to extend to our principal, Mr. Thomas J. Whalen, the deepest thanks for having been, during these past four years, more than a principal and administrator, but also a loyal friend and supporter. To the Class of 1964: It has been stated that the character of youth ' s thoughts determines the nation ' s destiny in the next generation. This, in essence, is one of the major purposes of education — to develop in young men and women the ability to think clearly, to evaluate objectively, and to work purposefully. I hope your training at Stoughton High School has prepared you for a purposeful life, and that you consider as one of your major responsibilities the improvement of your community, your town, your state, and your nation. In closing, may I extend my congratulations on the occasion of your graduation and wish you every success in your future life. THOMAS J. WHALEN 8

SUPERINTENDENT To the Class of 1964: It is a real pleasure for me to extend my best wishes for future happiness and success to the members of the class of 1964 as you complete your education in the Stoughton Public Schools. Our schools have worked to provide the best possible program for you, a very diversified and important group of future citizens. Space is our great new dramatic frontier and I believe that you will respond to it as your ancestors responded to earlier frontiers. O ur history has been one of pushing paths through the wilderness to find new visions. Space is the last great physical frontier, but the gateway to space is through education. The job of being a pioneer has become so technically complex that there is no conceivable short cut. To be a success you must have a desire for further education. The basic challenge of our times is the promise of every individual. During your senior year we were shocked and saddened by the assassination of our President, John Fitzgerald Kennedy, the friend of all men of goodwill, a believer in the dignity and equality of all human beings, a fighter for justice, an apostle of peace. We can all be better Americans because he has passed our way. He shall not have died in vain, if we as Americans dedicate our lives to the acceptance of truth, justice and mercy as personal responsibilities. I congratulate you on your attainments. Feel free to call on us if your think that we can render further service. I hope that we have contributed towards enabling you to take your proper place in society. Our pride in your achievements gives us vision and confidence for the future. Go forth with vigor and assume your new responsibilities with dedication as courageous Americans. JOSEPH H. GIBBONS 7

ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL To the Class of 1964: Effective democracy can be achieved only when an intelligent and well-informed citizenry actively participates in governmental affairs, both at the national and local level. In the immediate future your generation will have to assume the burden of leadership and deci- sion. I am confident that you will accept this chal- lenge and carry on in the splendid tradition that has become known the world over as the Ameri- can Way of Life. I extend my best wishes to each of you for your future success and happiness. ARTHUR L. PENARDI DIRECTOR OF GUIDANCE Congratulations and sincere best wishes to the Class of 1964: A diploma from Stoughton High School is a mark of distinction. It testifies that you have per- formed certain required tasks in the form of ac- quiring skills, information, attitudes and apprecia- tions. The diploma, however, does not have the same significance to all graduates. To some, it is the passport which opens the door to immediate, desirable employment opportunities. To others it is the ticket of admission to a school or training program which will provide advanced education, commensurate with interests aptitudes and future plans. Whichever road you take, in meeting the chal- lenges of employment, education and citizenship, be mindful that your future success and happiness will depend largely upon your willingness to uti- lize the training acquired at Stoughton High School ALBERT C. WILLIAMSON 9
