SUPERINTENDENT To the Class of 1964: It is a real pleasure for me to extend my best wishes for future happiness and success to the members of the class of 1964 as you complete your education in the Stoughton Public Schools. Our schools have worked to provide the best possible program for you, a very diversified and important group of future citizens. Space is our great new dramatic frontier and I believe that you will respond to it as your ancestors responded to earlier frontiers. O ur history has been one of pushing paths through the wilderness to find new visions. Space is the last great physical frontier, but the gateway to space is through education. The job of being a pioneer has become so technically complex that there is no conceivable short cut. To be a success you must have a desire for further education. The basic challenge of our times is the promise of every individual. During your senior year we were shocked and saddened by the assassination of our President, John Fitzgerald Kennedy, the friend of all men of goodwill, a believer in the dignity and equality of all human beings, a fighter for justice, an apostle of peace. We can all be better Americans because he has passed our way. He shall not have died in vain, if we as Americans dedicate our lives to the acceptance of truth, justice and mercy as personal responsibilities. I congratulate you on your attainments. Feel free to call on us if your think that we can render further service. I hope that we have contributed towards enabling you to take your proper place in society. Our pride in your achievements gives us vision and confidence for the future. Go forth with vigor and assume your new responsibilities with dedication as courageous Americans. JOSEPH H. GIBBONS 7

SCHOOL COMMITTEE Mrs. Whitehead, Mr. Daley, Mr. Buckley, Dr. Woodward, Mr. Gibbons, Mr. Benjamin. To the Class of 1964: You will graduate this year into an exciting and challenging era when it is important to look forward with courage, not backward with fear. It is a time to remember the true meaning of education: to keep an inquiring and critical mind, tolerant of other opinions, but firm in your own principles. It is time to speak out for justice and freedom, but to be aware of two sides to arguments. It is a time to continue the desire for better ways of life, which we have tried to instill in your years in Stoughton High School. Above all, in the words of Chief Justice Warren, it is time to abjure the hatred that consumes people, the false accusations that divide us, and the bitterness that begets violence. It is a time of opportunity for your generation to promote better understanding among yourselves and tolerance for others. We wish you Godspeed. APPLETON C. WOODWARD, M.D. Chairman 6

PRINCIPAL The Qass of 1964 wishes to extend to our principal, Mr. Thomas J. Whalen, the deepest thanks for having been, during these past four years, more than a principal and administrator, but also a loyal friend and supporter. To the Class of 1964: It has been stated that the character of youth ' s thoughts determines the nation ' s destiny in the next generation. This, in essence, is one of the major purposes of education — to develop in young men and women the ability to think clearly, to evaluate objectively, and to work purposefully. I hope your training at Stoughton High School has prepared you for a purposeful life, and that you consider as one of your major responsibilities the improvement of your community, your town, your state, and your nation. In closing, may I extend my congratulations on the occasion of your graduation and wish you every success in your future life. THOMAS J. WHALEN 8
