SCHOOL COMMITTEE Seated: Edmund Daly, Margaret Whitehead, Robert Buckley, Dr. Appleton Woodward, Chairman, David Benjamin, Joseph Gibbons, Superintendent. TO THE CLASS OF 63 And what are wars but politics transformed from chronic, to acute, and bloody? Robert Frost You are graduating into the world of the Thermo-nuclear Era, a complete new phase in a manner of living which can be either profit- able or destructive. It will return a profit that will insure peace upon our earth or a loss that may end in our complete annihilation. Do not let yourselves become pawns in the faction that spreads confusion, hysteria and untruths; but continue your education, the highest priv- ilege that is granted to you in a democracy to seek out facts, reasons, and truths. A hundred years ago, Emerson told his generation that this time, like all times is a very good one, if we but know what to do with it. Appleton C. Woodward, M.D. Chairman, Stoughton School Committee 6

SUPERINTENDENT JOSEPH H. GIBBONS To the Class of 1963: We all know very vividly that we live in a dangerous age. It is, however, a great age, like the days of our frontier, since it is rich in opportunity. Professional or vocational opportunities are opening in every direction, but all of them depend heavily on knowledge. You must be willing to accept the challenge by pursuing knowledge and growing in the power to use it. If you pursue the right learning, then you will grow in wisdom. As future citizens you must see others as individuals of dignity and worth. I hope that you have developed an understanding and a deep appreciation of equality and a firm sense of righteousness. I congratulate you on your attainments, and I extend my best wishes to all of you in the years ahead. Go forth and assume your proper place in our democratic society for you are fully equal to the demands that life will put upon you. 7
