SUPERINTENDENT To the Class oj 1962: Education is an essential part of the develop- ment of man. Education and freedom go hand in hand. To be free we must have the ability to distinguish right from wrong, and we must have the personal courage to pursue that which is right. As you prepare to enter our democratic society, you must be ready to assume your re- sponsibility and contribute to a wholesome social environment. A healthy democracy depends on an intelligent and morally upright electorate. You must dedicate yourself to the principle of freedom and strengthen its appeal to the world. Every American is summoned to extraordinary personal responsibility, sustained effort and sacri- fice since our nation is in grave danger. You must think in global terms because the birth of new na- tions is the most significant development in world affairs. Our future depends in large measure on our appraisal of these new societies. The radical and far-reaching effects of the changes in the character of world society have not yet been realized. I congratulate you and extend my best wishes to all of you in the years ahead. Your pubhc school education has endeavored to prepare you for participation in a democratic society. Your success will be measured by your self-motivation, for talent without motivation is inert and of little use. Go forth from Stoughton High School with a desire to excel, a perseverance in the face of obstacles, then I am certain you will attain your goal. JOSEPH H. GIBBONS Supt. oj Schools Joseph H. SCHOOL COMMITTEE Seated — Edmund Daly, David Benjamin, Robert Buckley, Chairman; Dr. Appleton Woodward, Leonard Anderson, Joseph Gibbons, Superintendent. To the Class of 1962: That a sound educational program has far-reaching, beneficial effects is part of our American faith. Our people believe that, through education, their lot and the lot of their children can be improved. Youth must expect to exhibit self-reliance, determination, and energy in the process of growing up, but it has a right to certain conditions provided by others. Y outh has the right to a family which is affectionate and stable, to a community which is wholesome and friendly, and to a government which is respectable, intelligent, and devoted to the public welfare. The status of the individual must remain our primary concern. All our insti- tutions — pohtical, social and economic — must further enhance the dignity of the citizen, promote the maximum development of his capabilities, stimulate his responsible excercise, and widen the range and effectiveness of opportunities for individual choice. We extend to the Class of 1962 our congratulations and sincere best wishes. STOUGHTON SCHOOL COMMITTEE
