SUPERINTENDENT To the Class oj 1962: Education is an essential part of the develop- ment of man. Education and freedom go hand in hand. To be free we must have the ability to distinguish right from wrong, and we must have the personal courage to pursue that which is right. As you prepare to enter our democratic society, you must be ready to assume your re- sponsibility and contribute to a wholesome social environment. A healthy democracy depends on an intelligent and morally upright electorate. You must dedicate yourself to the principle of freedom and strengthen its appeal to the world. Every American is summoned to extraordinary personal responsibility, sustained effort and sacri- fice since our nation is in grave danger. You must think in global terms because the birth of new na- tions is the most significant development in world affairs. Our future depends in large measure on our appraisal of these new societies. The radical and far-reaching effects of the changes in the character of world society have not yet been realized. I congratulate you and extend my best wishes to all of you in the years ahead. Your pubhc school education has endeavored to prepare you for participation in a democratic society. Your success will be measured by your self-motivation, for talent without motivation is inert and of little use. Go forth from Stoughton High School with a desire to excel, a perseverance in the face of obstacles, then I am certain you will attain your goal. JOSEPH H. GIBBONS Supt. oj Schools Joseph H. Assistant Principal ARTHUR L PENARDI Congratulations and best wishes to the Class of 1962! As you conclude the first phase of your normal life span, you have witnessed the power of man ' s intel- lect. He has placed himself in orbit around the earth. He has made tremen- dous advances in the field of medicine to alleviate human suffering and his pro- duction of consumer goods has reached an all-time high. However, man has yet to perfect a plan whereby all of the people of the world can look forward to an enduring peace. It is my earnest hope that as each of you continue in your professional or vocational training, you will make a sub- stantial contribution in this problem area so that you will experience a lasting peace in your lifetime. ARTHUR L. PENARDI Assistant Principal Director of Guidance ALBERT C. WILLIAMSON TO THE CLASS OF 1962 Graduation will precipitate you into a world turbulent with a variety of cur- rents: tension and confusion on the neg- ative side and progress in science, edu- cation, medicine, technology and social welfare on the other. Both sides of the picture underscore a demand for young adults with the necessary training and character to join forces with their elders in coping with present demands of society. We, the faculty and administration of Stoughton High School, have attempted to prepare you for these responsibilities now descending upon your shoulders. Use these skUls and appreciations well, with our best wishes. ALBERT C. WILLIAMSON Director of Guidance 7
