he day of beginning has come; graduation is upon us. As the strains of the recessional fade away, our footsteps echo for the last time through jthese hallowed halls. But the melody of memories that go with us will linger in our hearts, long after we have left the por- tals of S.H.S. As we begin anew, we are reminded of the lessons we have learned. To every walk of life w shall strive to bring the high ideals and moral courage which will motivate and cjirect us henceforth. We go forth to accept our responsibilities, mirroring the confidence and trust placed in us by faculty and friends. We. the Class of 1960, stand ready to affirm this faith, each in his individual manner. We, the young adults of today, and the generating force of tomorrow, stand humbly and hopefully in the light of the future. Wlierever our paths take us, we shall re- member the warmth of the kindred experiences shared in growing up. In years hence, may we reminisce through these pages with the fondest of memories. School Appleton C. Woodward Mr. Robert J. Buckley To the Class of 1960: We are living in a period of de- mocracy ' s greatest crisis. Never before has the statement that civilization is a race between education and chaos been more true, because today free men and free institutions all over the world face a challenge equally as com- pelling as the challenge we faced in war. The forces that we fight in the cold war are less tangible and many times more difficult to struggle against than the ones we encountered in World War II. However, they are equally destructive and deadly to our basic human and democratic values. The peace of the world and the fu- ture of the world are dependent on education. Education is our best hope for peace. As long as we tolerate ig- norance in this country, we are de- liberately doing what we do not have to do. We are making the road to nationwide well being far more diffi- cult to travel than it otherwise would be. In many cases it ' s up to you whether you continue your education. Nobody knows what lies ahead in the coming years, except the chances are your generation will be called to en- gage in as tough a contest as the world has ever seen. Nothing will make this contest easy, but holding the long view that looks beyond this year and the next will help tremendously. And the basis of this long view is continued education.
