School Appleton C. Woodward Mr. Robert J. Buckley To the Class of 1960: We are living in a period of de- mocracy ' s greatest crisis. Never before has the statement that civilization is a race between education and chaos been more true, because today free men and free institutions all over the world face a challenge equally as com- pelling as the challenge we faced in war. The forces that we fight in the cold war are less tangible and many times more difficult to struggle against than the ones we encountered in World War II. However, they are equally destructive and deadly to our basic human and democratic values. The peace of the world and the fu- ture of the world are dependent on education. Education is our best hope for peace. As long as we tolerate ig- norance in this country, we are de- liberately doing what we do not have to do. We are making the road to nationwide well being far more diffi- cult to travel than it otherwise would be. In many cases it ' s up to you whether you continue your education. Nobody knows what lies ahead in the coming years, except the chances are your generation will be called to en- gage in as tough a contest as the world has ever seen. Nothing will make this contest easy, but holding the long view that looks beyond this year and the next will help tremendously. And the basis of this long view is continued education. To the Class of I960: It Is significant that as members of the Senior Class of I960 you not only cross the threshold of your education but also cross the threshold of a new decade as well. Our history seems to run in decades, each with its special coloration. The beginning of a new life in a new decade should be an important event. It can provide for you special opportunity to take a reckoning of your bearings and setting of your sights for the future. As a mature person you might well take inventory for this may provide for you an ideal opportunity to make changes or even beginnings in your lives. Many things will happen in the Sixties about which you will have little to do or say; howevpr, there will also be many opportunities for you to make a contribution for the common good. I congratulate you on your individual and group attainments, and I extend my best wishes to all of you in the years ahead. Your public school education has endeavored to prepare you for active participation in our democratic society. Your contribution will depend upon your interest and willingness to be a responsible, active citizen of a community. You must be willing to assume freely your civic obligations and responsibilities. In conclusion, I admonish you to participate with enthusiasm and perseverance striving to be a credit to yourself, your parents and your school. You are fully equal to the demands that life will put upon you if you will face them with goodness and courage. Best wishes in your pursuit of success and happiness Mr. Joseph H. Gibbons J Joseph H. Gibbons Supt. . of Schools 7
