To the Class of ' 58 I extend my personal wish for a future of unlimited opportunity and rewarded effort. With your own talents may you reach forward to shape your own lives in a manner which will be a credit to you and a benefit to your fellow man. The lessons of high school have been many, but none have been more important than those associated with the responsible exercise of freedom. The extent to which you have learned the lessons of freedom with responsibility will be apparent in the conduct of your daily lives — the manner in which you approach your future studies, perform your jobs, and exercise the privilege of membership in a democratic society. It is my hope that as you continue to seek freedom in your daily lives you may realize that the real foundation of personal freedom is the pursuit of truth through knowledge and the exercise of discipline by internal restraint rather than external control. Then may you remain free to enjoy the fruits of your own labors. 8

To the Class of 1958: This nation of ours will endure only as long as an intelligent and educated citizenry exists to develop and perpetuate the American way of life. In the immediate future many of you will take on the full time responsibilities of your chosen vocation. Do not become so engrossed in earning a living that you overlook all the other aspects of community life. I cannot emphasize strongly enough the need for young people to participate in their local civic or- ganizations. Time does not stand still and soon your generation will have to assume the burden of leadership and de- cision. I have not the slightest doubt that you will ac- cept this challenge and carry on in the splendid tra- dition that is to be found in our democratic way of life. I extend my best wishes to each and every one for your future success and happiness. ARTHUR L. PENARDI Assistant Principal To The Class of 1958: Graduation from Stoughton High School is necessarily a time of mixed feelings. It is a happy occasion because of the goal achieved, yet it may cause feelings of sad- ness at the loss of daily contact with good friends among the student body and faculty. It is a time to be proud because of the accomplish- ments effected by you during your years at Stoughton High School but it is also a time to be concerned at the responsibilities which you now must assume as you approach adulthood. Graduation represents years of faithful discharge of the responsibilities of a student. It also represents the threshold of a new job, a bigger job. The attitudes and characteristics acquired at Stough- ton High School wjll provide you with direction and motivation. The skill and knowledge acquired will be your tools and material. Best wishes for success ! ALBERT C. WILLIAMSON Director of Guidance 9
