SCHOOL COMMITTEE— Le to right: Edmund L. Daley, David M. Benjamin, Robert J. Buckley, Secretary; Appleton C. Woodward, M. D., Chairman; A. Leonard Anderson, Joseph H. Gibbons, Superintendent. This is a momentous graduation year, when the world is poised on the brink of an era of space travel, atomic energy, and unexplored realms of research; it will be remem- bered as a year of Sputniks and awakenings. It is a year of challenge to the youth of our country, a time to choose between complacency and hard work. During your school years it has been proven many times that there is no subsitute for hard work nor is it without its rewards. The future is yours, no longer as a ready made jewel but as a rough gem to be dug out by your own labors; it belongs to the men and women who are ready to labor with purpose and perseverance. The School Committee wishes you all success in your undertakings with a sincere hope that your years at S.H.S. will be a firm reminder of the better things in life, which can be yours. APPLETON C. WOODWARD, M.D., Chairman Stoughton School Committee

To the Class of ' 58 I extend my personal wish for a future of unlimited opportunity and rewarded effort. With your own talents may you reach forward to shape your own lives in a manner which will be a credit to you and a benefit to your fellow man. The lessons of high school have been many, but none have been more important than those associated with the responsible exercise of freedom. The extent to which you have learned the lessons of freedom with responsibility will be apparent in the conduct of your daily lives — the manner in which you approach your future studies, perform your jobs, and exercise the privilege of membership in a democratic society. It is my hope that as you continue to seek freedom in your daily lives you may realize that the real foundation of personal freedom is the pursuit of truth through knowledge and the exercise of discipline by internal restraint rather than external control. Then may you remain free to enjoy the fruits of your own labors. 8
