1 Gerard P. Antonellis Deep within each of us we will find a bit of blithe spirit; and so we feel it fitting to dedicate our 1957 Sto-tonian to the personification of this spirit in our midst. For your merry-hearted, unassuming manner; for your congenial and good-natured assistance; and most of all, for the great capacity within you to give us so much pleasure and , satisfaction continually through the years, we extend to you, Mr. Antonellis, our unstinted praise with both fondness and gratitude.

Our program is coming to a close, each member of this orchestra is putting away his music and placing his instrument in the case for the last time. We have worked and played together for a long time, and we have come a great way from the first time we joined hands six years ago. Young and somewhat shaky on our new horns, violins, and drums, we sat down together hoping someday to be able to produce a harmony and grandeur that would make people stop and listen! Through the years we learned to keep our instruments in tune, to play softly or loudly as the music demanded, and to keep our eyes on the conductor. Before we knew it, the music began to sound maturely interpreted and had a clearness that rang true nearly every time. Each member was learning what it was to be a part of the whole. The drums learned to respect the sweetness of the violins and the horns soon were sensitive to even the slightest trill of the flutes. One could clearly see the fame of this orchestra would not fade easily! As we leave Stoughton High School which has so graciously housed us, and the faculty who have kindly guided and arranged our pieces, we take with us an inner strength that can come only from having worked and learned together. Many of us will find ourselves joining more professional and larger orchestras in the years to come. We will learn to adapt ourselves to them too. It will not be easy becoming a new member and learning to play more difficult music any more than it was six years ago. But there is a grave difference. We know how to sit in that chair, humble and shaky. We know that by working hard and putting our hearts into it, we can become a sucessful part of any orchestra we choose. Before our student orchestra disbands we wish to present to you our Grand Finale — The 1957 Sto-tonian. SCHOOL COMMITTEE — Left to Right; Edmund L. Daley, Joseph H. Gibbons, Superintendent; Robert J. Buckley, Secretary; Appleton C. Woodward, M.D., Chairman; David M. Benjamin, A. Leon- ard Anderson. In these days of critical comparisons, a great deal is heard about the values of different kinds of education. You have received here the typical education, which teaches the students how to evaluate knowledge, rather than to amass large stores of knowledge itself. We hope you have acquired the ability to think, to appraise without bias, prejudice or selfishness, and to follow the highest principle for the just conclusion of your actions. The School Committee wishes you well in all your future activities, with the firm belief that you will grow with your liberal education to develop a just critical thought. A. C. WOODWARD, M. D.
