bmtnt ' sitration SCHOOL COMMITTEE L. to r. : Edmund L. Daley, Joseph H. Gibbons, Superintendent; Robert J. Buckley, Secretary; Apple- ton C. Woodward, M.D., Chairman; David M. Benjamin, A. Leonard Anderson. To The Class of 1956: This above all: to thine own self be true. And it must follou , as the night the day, Thou canst not then be false to any man. Hamlet, Act I, Scene III. The time has come when you are to become responsible citizens of the com- munity. Until now your responsibilities were infinitesimal, parents have been your guardians, schools have helped to educate you and to a great extent, orientate you to the ways of society. We hope you are prepared to meet this serious responsibility and join harmoniously with your fellow man for the sake of better living. In being true to your finer self, you must learn self-discipline and respect for authority, in order to give your best to your community. The Stoughton School Committee wishes to express their most sincere con- gratulations. APPLETON C. WOODWARD, M.D. Chairman 4

We, the class of 1956, gratefully dedicate our Sto-tonian to Mr. Donald P. Murphy not only for the great transformation which his leadership has brought about in our class — from a splintered group of individualists to an organization smoothly working towards a common goal — but to show our appreciation for his willing help as a friend, an able instructor, and a wise advisor.

To the Class of 1956: As future citizens, you will be partners in a self- governing country. You will have blessings and obli- gations that you must share with your neighbors. Your public school education has endeavored to pre- pare you as a citizen to carry forward the ideals of justice, freedom, fidelity, and brotherhood. You must be willing to carry forward our American heritage. These are years of strenuous change, with both prob- lems and potentialities. The value of your education will continue to be high. In today ' s world our citizens are taking on broader duties by accepting a larger share in world problems. You must not be guided by a narrow provincial point of view, because the world in which you live is more easily accessible from the farthest corners of the globe. Human values in all lands are part of the values that you must be concerned about in your everyday living in our modern society. As Superintendent of Schools, I extend my heart- iest congratulations to each and every member of the Class of 1956. As individuals and as a class you are to be commended for your achievements during your school years. You must strive continually to create a still better world for ourselves and for all mankind. In farewell, I extend my best wishes to you in the years ahead and urge you to be grateful to your parents and be a credit to them forever. JOSEPH H. GIBBONS Superintendent of Schools AARON FINK Principal JOSEPH H. GIBBONS Superintendent To the Class of 1956: Growth with experience is one of the greatest assets of an individual or an organization. That the class of ' 56 has exhibited this sterling quality to a remarkable degree has been apparent to those of us who had intimate contact with you during your years at Stoughton High School. Your willingness to assume the mature respon- sibilities of seniority in your school gives us much of which we can be proud. You, too, can be proud that the spirit you have generated and the respect you have earned through individual initiative and group effort have reflected favorably upon all students in all classes. My personal wishes of continued friendship and years of good fortune are extended to each of you in the Class of 1956. AARON FINK Principal
