prologue As we leave Stoughton High School, we are, in a sense, stepping into the cast of a great drama for which we have been rehearsing for a number of years. We are graduating at a time when the threat of atomic destruction, the threat of guided missile warfare, makes the world shake like a thing unfirm. We are going out into a fear-ridden world, a world boasting material accomplishments undreamed of by our forefathers; yet this brave new world needs, to a greater degree than ever before, a generation dedicated to the accomplishments of the mind and spirit. This world is divided against itself, each half trying to outdo the other in the race for atomic and political superiority. Imagine the good that could be accomplished if both factions decided to work jointly for the good of all humanity. Cool heads and courageous thoughts are needed. Before going forth to take part in this great drama, we have published this, The 19 6 Sto-tonian, as the story of our preparation for living in a chaotic, divided world. Murphy not only for the great transformation which his leadership has brought about in our class — from a splintered group of individualists to an organization smoothly working towards a common goal — but to show our appreciation for his willing help as a friend, an able instructor, and a wise advisor.
