DONALD MARSHALL Social Studies Brown University, A.B., 1943 University of Pennsylvania, M.S., 1948 Two years ago, Mr. Marshall came to us from another prominent private school. Since then he has become very popular with the student body. He was elected as faculty advisor to the Student Organization. Serving as football coach, he works especially with the linemen. As a master in Hegeman Hall, he resides there with his wife and family. JOHN WARREN HERSHEY English Department Franklin and Marshall College, A.B,, 1936 Duke University, M.A., 1941 One of the two members of the faculty who gradu- ated from Stony Brook, Mr. Hershey is a member of the English department of the school. He handles the discipline of the students, gives ofl-campus permissions, and arranges the table seating in the dining room. ln addition to these duties he also coaches the shot put and discus for the track team. He also has been the director of many fine plays for the dramatics club. esm- 3.- if I I l I 19 . 5 Lglllll...J ANDREW WHYTE Mathematics Department Science Department Stevens Institute of Technology, M.E., 1910 Columbia University CTeachers Collegeb, A.M., 1921 Mr. Whyte has been teaching at Stony Brook for three years. He teaches algebra and supervises the physics ond chemistry laboratory classes. Mr. Whyte is always ready and willing to help out the organi- zations in the school by providing trans. portation to such things as deputations and tract distributions. Mr, Whyte lives with some of the older boys in Shadyside Hall.

1-5 JAMES BARTON Science Department l Franklin and Marshall College, B.S., 1946 Mr. Barton, coming to us from Pittsburgh, has been teaching at Stony Brook for five years. A busy man, he teaches biology and general science, advises the Audio Visual Club, and coaches freshman football. He takes an active interest in the student welfare by taking charge of such things as the school-wide parties, the dormitory decorating contest, and the Saturday night entertainments. He also preaches in many of the churches on long Island. t' ROBERT MENZ Language Department Houghton College, B.A., 1952 A classics maior from Houghton College, Mr. Merz came to Stony Brook last year to teach Latin and music appreciation. He and his wife live in Johnston Hall, where he is one of the resident masters. Mr. Merz often plays the piano for the Sunday evening chapel services and the Christian Activities Club deputations. In addition to his teaching duties, he is advisor to the school paper. ROBERT WARD Bible Department University of Washington, B.S., 1948 Dallas Theological Seminary, Th.M., 1953 Coming from the far off state of Washington, Mr. Ward has been teaching at Stony Brook for four years. His courses include plane geom- etry, iunior Bible, and mechanical drawing. His other duties include advising the Christian Activities Club and supervising winter class athletics. One of the resident masters of Johnston Hall, Mr. Ward lives on the first floor with his wife and infant son. I J 4. 18

LOUIS ROEDERER Language Department Economics Department Licencie en Droit, University of Lyons fFranceJ Originally coming to Stony Brook as a substitute teacher when Mr. Akeroyd was ill, Mr. Roederer did such a good iob he was asked to stay on as a regular teacher. He is teaching economics and Span- ish. He also teaches a French class for the people of the surrounding community. Mr. Roederer worked in the United Nations before coming to Stony Brook. FRANCIS LIGGET Bible Department FLOYD JOHNSON Director of Athletics Mathematics Department Davidson College, A.B., 1936 Duke University, M.A., 1941 Springfield College, B.S., 1950 Dallas Theological Seminary, Th.M., 1951 Now in his third year at Stony Brook, Mr. Ligget teaches Bible and current events. He has a busy schedule which includes coaching i.v. football, wrest- ling, and i.v. baseball. He acts as advisor to the Auto Mechanics Club. Mr. Ligget lives with his wife and family in Hopkins Hall. A graduate of Stony Brook in the class of '31, Mr. Johnson returned to his alma mater as a master. Besides teaching senior math, geometry, and algebra, he also is Director of Athletics. His duties include coaching the varsity football and baseball teams. Mr. Johnson lives with his wife and family in their home on the campus. 20
