But for one evening at the Park Plaza 57 , these couples had a treasured moment in time. It was a night to remember, if not for the delicious meal of chicken parmagiana, then for the unforgettable mixture of popular songs by master D. J., Tim Powers and crew. It was said by some to be ' the perfect prom ' , and as the Class of 89 ' s first, it set a difficult precedent to follow. gMiiiMfH 1 aajfrsa FACULTY Editors: Lisa Gebhard, Jeanine Aniello W Dr. William L. Mr. Scannell and Mr. Carino kept the show fast-paced, it was over in less than two and a half hours, and upbeat. Master and Mistress of Ceremonies: George Noonan and Lisa Gebhard complimented each other superbly and added a lot of humor to the introductions. George also showed a special talent for ad libbing. A new addition to the staff was computer sound technician Jonathan Keegan whose timely use of digitized music, speech and sound effects added new dimensions to a variety of the acts. The permanent set augmented by blue bunting by Joe McCleam was Spartan, yet spectacular. The class acts consisted of The Class of 1992: A Freshman ' s first day at school. The Class of 1991: The Act of the Century, The Class of 1990: A first date, and The Class of 1989: The Family Feud. The King and Queen for this year ' s Carnival Ball were Steven Ciulla and Paula Walsh. The Attendants and Ushers were: Josie Patalano and Len Jackson, Christine Carr and Brian Seabury, Karen MacKay and Scott Fiore, Kristin Terrasi and John Patalano, Kathy Seal ly and Craig Seabury, Jane Powers and Steven Sorabella, Linette Kelley and Kevin Daly, Jeanine Aniello and Brian Hilliard, Missy Sannella and Joe Celli, and Lori Kelley and John Calcavecchia. 47 Drama Fest This year the Drama Club took Jean Anouilh ' s adaption of theclassic Antigone to the Massachusetts High School Drama Festival. This competition started with the preliminary level at Belmont High School where Stoneham went up against six other schools. From here an excited cast and crew went on to Brock- ton High School for the semi-finals. Here, despite their premonition of Catastrophe , they were chosen to go on to the state finals - the first time Stoneham has accomplished this in twenty-two years! The Finals took place at the John Hancock building in Boston over three long days. During this time, Stoneham students met and interacted with students from fourteen other high schools from across Massachusetts. Obviously, the hard work and dedication put out by the students and their advisor paid off and should be highly commended. Bravo! Senior Class Play The 1988-89 school year brought with it a new Drama director to Stoneham High. Ms. Paula Sampson, with extensive experience in theatre both as an actress and a director, got things rolling with Brighton Beach Memoirs, this year ' s Senior Class Play. Neil Simon’s masterpiece comedy about a jewish family ' s problems and triumphs in 1937 Brooklyn, New York, was brought to life in our auditorium by an all-star cast and an organized relentless stage crew. The indisputable success of Brighton Beach Memoirs , made an impressive debut for Ms. Sampson as our new director, and we have high hopes for future productions under her expert guidance. Tonia Vasconcellos, Natasha Williams, Lori Heller, Debbie Dango, Linda Rossetti, Nichole Gauthier, Karen Riccadelli ' 66 1 1 dA Cheerleading This year ' s Fall Cheering team had a great season. We had many great times at the games since our team was so small and close. Competition was an exciting moment in each of the girls ' lives, especially for the four new Freshmen. It was held in Beverly and we had great fan turnout. The season ended with a great Thanksgiving pep rally, probably the best in Stoneham History. Cheering is considered a sport by most of Stoneham High this year, and hopefully the interest in cheering will improve in the future. Thanks for a great season. The Cheerleaders Boys Cross Country The Boys Cross Country team had an outstanding season, posting a winning record of five wins, four losses - the best record in over fifteen years. Great leadership was demonstrated by Captain Andy Martino, League All-Star Paul Drago and Justin Meehan, the veteran seniors with eleven years worth of varsity experience among them. Other veterans, Steve Burnham and Pat McCabe, along with newcomers Jay Rogers, Mike Noke, Alex Kennedy, Chris Stuto, Shaun Downes, and Matt Meehan also helped the team towards its victorious . . . . . . season. With a sixth place in Catholic Memorical Invitational and a seventh place finish in the Eastern Mass State Meet, Stoneham has finally shown that its boys can compete on statewide level. It is the beginning of a new era for Cross Country. With all the young talent, they will surely be a force to be reckoned with in the years to come. Allison Legore 70 Girls Cross Country Led by Co-Captains Jane Powers and Kathy Scally.the Girls Cross Country team worked to their potentialto remain dominant in the Middlesex League. Woburn handed Stoneham its only loss since 1986 by the devastating score of 27 to 28. But the girls came back to beat Woburn in both the Middlesex League and the All State Meets. The team was runnerup in Division II Eastern Mass and remained unbeaten in both the Northern Area and Middlesex League Meets for the past four years. The Stoneham team had more All-Stars than any other team in the Middlesex League. The included Senior Kathy Keegan and Juniors Renee Ferraro, Pam Swan, Karen Daly and Susan Daly. Honorable Mentions were awarded to Co-Captains Jane Powers and Kathy Scally. 71 Front Row (left to right):Co-Captains Lisa Simonetti, Marlena D Agostino, Second Row (left to right)Missy Sannella, Laura Stuto. Michelle Gagne, Kathy Powers, Courtney Cann, Lynn Tropeano, Melissa Greene, Manager Tony Phillips m Field Hockey The 1988 Field Hockey team was the most accomplished Stoneham High has ever had. With enthusiastic Underclassmen and the leadership of the Seniors, the team ' s sense of unity contributed greatly to their success. All Stars included Michele Gagne, ' 91 , Laura Stuto, ' 89 and goalie Kelly Robbins, ' 89. Thanks to the respected and knowledgeable coaching by Cynthia Carbone and Christine Simpson, our team qualified for the Mass State Tournament. We were only the second Stonham team to qualifi=y for the tournament and the only one to win a game init. Stoneham ' s victory was a 1-0 thriller over Bishop Fenwick, sending us to the quarterfinals. There we lost 1-0 to Amesbury in double overtime. The proud Captains were Lisa Simonetti and Marlena D ' Agostino, who never stopped encouraging their H-O-U-S-E of a team to be the top contenders in the league that they were. The members of this team will never forget their accomplishments in the Fall of ' 88. 73 Front Row (left to right): Scott Fields, Tri-Captains John Calcavecchia, Brian Hilliard and Mike Noone, Joe Fournier, Tom Heller, Back Row (left to right): Scott Fiore. Alan Norris, Tim Jameson, Steven Mahoney, Kevin Daly, Eric Antonucci 74 Football The 1988 Spartan Football Team was one of great achievement. Led by Tri-Captains John Calcavecchia, Brian Hilliard and Mike Noone, the team molded together into one of the greatest teams in S.H.S. history. In the preseason polls we were picked last in many of the local newspapers. But through hard workand dedication, the team overcame the great odds. Much credit should be given to the coaching staff for preparing us in the off season. Coaches Bob Powers and Ron Wood aided in the conditioning and weight training of everyone throughout the summer. The team itself was led by Seniors Joe Marengi, Len Jackson, Alan Norris, Tom Heller, Steve Mahoney, Joe Fournier, Scott Fiore, Eric Antonucci, Scott Fields and Kevin Daly. Each Senior played a key role, wether it be on the playing field or the practice field. The year started off well with victories over Div III rival Concord and league powerhouses, Lexington and Belmont. The team ' s first loss came on a Sunday Game at the hands of Woburn. The team wouldn ' t lose another game until the second to last game vs Melrose, collecting victories over Burlington, Wakefield, Winchester, and Watertown. Overall, the season was very successful and fun. League All Stars: Brian Hilliard, John Calcavecchia, Mike Noone, Jay Carciero and Kevin Daly. ..Globe Div I Defensive All Stars: Kevin Daly and Brian Hilliard 75 EkS Thansgiving Day Game Although the Spartan Football team did not emerge victorious on Thanksgiving day, we broke a decade long losing streak. Led by Captains Brian Hilliard, Michael Noone and John Calcavecchia the Spartan juggernaut exerted a valiant effort in front of a crowd of over 6000 fans. The Rockets drew first blood, but the Spartans answered on the next offensive play. With the score tied at 7-7, neither team seemed to be able to take control. Late in the 4th quarter, Reading had the ball deep in Stoneham territory. They inched their way down to the goal line but were denied by the awesome Spartan defense. Stoneham took over and began moving the ball but they were intercepted and Reading had another chance. With less than 12 seconds left the Rockets tried the old “Hail Mary pass. Stoneham’s final chance to win the game and clinch the League title came with less than fiveseconds left when Hilliard intercepted at his goal line and ran the ball back into Reading territory before finally being brought down as time ran out. 77 Front Row (left to right): Steve Sorabella. We posted a 7-2 record but not good enough to capture the Middlesex League title. That was a disappointmentbecause we easily beat the eventual winner, Melrose. Seniors Co-Captains Matt Cann and Craig Seabury, along with Glenn Seabury provided the leadership and experience that come with being four year veterans. Newcomers Steve Sorabella and Todd Davis gave us all a few laughs. Sophomore Dave Tropeano was voted to the All- League Golf Team. We were a closely knit team who always enjoyed playing. However disappointed we may have been about not winning the league title, we all agree that there never was a time we didn ' t have fun. Thanks Coach Bill Seabury for all you have done. 79 Front Row (left to right): Tri-Captains Robert Zuk. Jay McDonnell. Jesse Haley. Jay McDonnell, Jesse Haley and Rob Zuk did not have a season dreams are made of. What they did have was courage heart and class. Seniors Peter Henriksen, John Patalano, Victor Marchese, Brian Seabury, Derek McCarthy and George Noonan showed the true spirit of the underdog. The highlight of the season was an exciting 2-2 tie with Watertown— an event that gained a headline in the Boston Herald. Jay McDonnell and Peter Henriksen were chosen Middlesex League All Stars, with Rob Zuk as an Honorable Mention. Coach Jim Carino, enthused by the great turnout of athletes for soccer, was proud of the contributions and the legacy of this year ' s team. 81 Front Row (left to right):C. Larson. K. Noonan Girls Soccer The 1988 girls soccer season will always be remembered. It had its very first year as a Varsity Sport. Their record was 2-15-2. They won against Melrose and Woburn. One of their ties kept Burlington from the States. Amy Whelan was selected to the 1988 AllNStar Team. Seniors that will surely be missed are Tri-Captains Jeanine Aniello, Dawn Harrington and Marisa Boyasian along with Josie Patalano, Mela nie Smith and Kristen Terrasi. Dawn Harrington proved to be an outstanding goalie when she played while Jen Whelan was out with a broken wrist. ■ I Front Row (left to right): Eileen Connolly, Captain Lori Kelly, Karen MacKay. The core of the team consisted ofseven talented seniors: Captain Lori Kelley, Christine Carr, Linette Kelley, Barbara Fabiano, Karen MacKay, Becky Tramontozzi, and Lisa Gebhard. The team overpowered the North Shore with their strong play. I n the past season, Stoneham surprised the Volleyball experts by defeating the competetive teams of Andover and Chelmsford. Stoneham proved their superior defense could carry them to the State Semi-Finals where they lost in a heart breaking five games to the powerful attack of Awuun rdqm Bishop Feehan. Yet, in keeping with Stoneham Volleyball tradition, this year ' s team obtained another North Suburban League Championship. 85 Front Row: Captain Larry Hurley, Back Row(left to right): Coach P. Killilea, Brian Fitzgerald, Eric Mahafer, Chris Zaya, Fred Holland, Richie Childs, Alfredo Dellaporta, Jesse Haley, Mark O ' Connor, Coach W. Killilea, (Missing from photo Kevin Daly). 86 ft Boys Basketball The 1988-89 Spartan Basketball Season was a year of reconstruction. Unlike last year, this year ' s team lacked size and experience— two key elements to a successful season in the Middlesex League. The team did not have a very impressive year going 5-15 in a well- balanced league. Yet the team showed some future potential in a home game verses the always powerful Lexington Minutemen, led by All- American point guard, Lloyd Mumford. The Spartans lost the game, but played down to the last buzzer losing 64-59 in front of a capacity crowd in the S.H.S. gymnasium. The team could always expect a good crowd at home, and would like to thank the faculty, students and families for their support. Unlike previous teams, this year ' s team was very young and inexperienced. The team was led by Senior captain Larry Hurley and Sen- iors Mark O ' Connor, Jesse Haley, and Kevin Daly. The underclassmen were the players with key roles in the little success of the Spartans. They were led by Juniors Chris Zaya, Rich Childs, Alfredo Della Porta and Dexter Foy . The rest of the squad was made up of Sophomore Sensation and Force to Be , Ryan Svensen along with Fred Holland, Brian Fitzgerald and Eric Guts Mahafer. These young members show great potential and promise to Coach Killilea and the league. 87 Front Row (left to right): Christine Kench, Co-Captains Dawn Harrington and Lori Kelley, Marisa Boyajian, Back Row (left to right): Coach Peter Marinelli, Kerri Harrington, Amy Whelan, Eileen Connolly, Julie Coutu, Jennifer Whelan, Renee Lehmann , Stephanie Fucarile, Tara Petrocelli. Girls Basketball I I The ' 88- ' 89 Girls Basketball team finished their season with 5 wins and 15 loses. Matt Brennan tied the school record in the 45 yard dash with a time of 5.2 seconds, and Pete Henriksen was the teams leading point scorer with close to 70 points. Paul Drago was one of the top milers in the league along with Andy Martino who was a top runner in the 600. With the football players entering the gym to the sounds of Colors , the spirit of the Senior Class, and the arrival of Spirit Chain Man, the pep rally had all the elements to make it one to remember. Good Luck next year, team! 145 September 10, 1988 proved to be an exciting time for all as Stoneham ' s annual Town Day saw perfect weather and smiling faces. The senior class kept our bellies filled with pizza and the Dairy Dome provided us with the dessert. The cheerleaders were all smiles, even with pies being thrown at their faces. Everyone had a good time and are patiently awaiting the arrival of next year ' s Town Day. Blood Drive On November 21, 1988, Student Council aided the Red Cross in a Blood Drive. It was very successful. Student Council would like to thank everyone that donated their time and blood. SPAR m 4 l W m - r a w wf 1 X , J| H ' V: i ■■■ HHH 3 T I ■ ■ ' x BKVyl 1 f | ;■ S[ JH V. Also, A Special Thanks To Dr. Ellen Bueschel For Allowing The Staff To Use Her Computer. Without Her Kindness And Patience, The Yearbook Would Not Have Been As Successful. And, We Would Like To Thank Paul Drago For All His Extra Time And Infinite Effort In Putting This Yearbook Together. Good Luck To The Class Of 1989! Sincerely, 175 DEDICATION Though this year was the first of our high school career without Mf. R0W6ll as an assistant principal, his presence was still felt. A twenty-nine year veteran of S.H.S., Mr. Rowell was known by all as ai disciplinarian, tough but fair, who wanted only the best for the Stoneham High students. Not so well- known is his two years of work in the Peace Corps and his love of dogs, horses, and the science of numbers. Mr. Rowell will be remembered with great fondness and respect by the class of ’89’
