AAANAFANAKAKAANEXNKAAANA ro ogue www sf Uvvv 0 'l he contribution made by btoneham High School over almost one hundred years cannot be adequ ntely me :sured Hundreds of graduates have made, and are now making, contributions in thc tow n, state, and nountry Although the first high school was erectccl in 1865 on ientral Street near the location of the present town hall the W 1111 nn Street building was built ln 1901 on the site of thc old cemctc ry This place w as chosen at a warmly debated town meeting by a yote of 175 to 6 bec iuse of its central location l orlng and Plllpp Boston architects estimatcd the cost at S42 000 V ith a capacity for 301 students, slate lhe northwest rooln was that of Superintendent 1 Ir, btey ens and the school committee Thc southwest room w is the bookkeeping room the present blology room, 1 lecture rooin room 15 the pllNilf' laboratory room 14 the chemistry laboratory and room 18, the art room In the room behind the stage in the assembly hall were kept the nnneral and bird collections In the rear of the building were the parade grounds for the cadets qome people regretted that there was no gun room in the school for the cadets' In 1924 and in 1978, additions were made to the building to house the increasing school population of the junior senior high school Lhanges were made 1n the curriculum and extra curricular dCl1Yltl6S to meet the needs of the students in college, business, and citizenship courses bhop, Lonsumer Education, Meehan 1cal Drawing, Home Economics, Business Machines, Retail Sales, Problems of Democracy, Driver Training, Dramatics, Speech, llassbook National Honor Society, Orchestra, Band, and fflce llub The senior high school faculty ln creased from sw ln 1901 to twenty two in 1935 Principals of the school after Mr iharles E Emerson were 1Vlr Howard W1 Watson and Mr Wllllam M Nadeau, the present principal The new high school at l entral and W llllalll Streets will be completed tlus year May the graduates of Stoneham High School alwavs liye up to their heritage and serye VN0l'llll1W the community and country V V X, xf V X!
