Living as we do in a time of world crisis, graduating as we are in an inaugural year, and deciding now as we must upon careers for our mature life, we realize the pri- vileges and responsibilites of a democratic society. The Torch reviews the many experiences that have contribut- ed to our growth — the influence of our teachers; creative expression in music, art, literature, and dramatics; partic- ipation in student government, athletics, and recreational activities; and development of friendships with those with whom we have worked and played together. We, the Class .of 1953, hope that this yearbook will always re- mind us that the light of democracy must be kept burn- ing. An

eat Tibby ' s contribution to Stoneham High School students and to our town has been tremendous! It is significant that at our class reunion he was affection- ately referred to as Stoneham High School ' s Mr. Chips . Over the quarter century since we graduated, he has given many of us wise counsel and advice, re- flecting a deep, sincere interest in us. Greatness is generally earned and so too is leadership. Nicholas E. Apalakis President of Boston University Alumni Boston, Massachusetts Since my days as a student in Mr. Thibodeau ' s classes, I have roamed far and wide, in many foreign places, as well as in this country; and the affection, admiration, and respect I have for my good friend and fine teacher, Mr. Thibodeau, remain as strong today as the day I graduated from Stoneham High School. Cynthia Bagdikian The Town House Los Angeles, California Earle Thomas Thibodeau is all that people hope to find when they consider what sort of man should be a teacher and a counselor of their teen-age chil- dren. Devoted to his profession and to his people, he stands out in my happy memories of high school days. Robert Holden, M. D. Commonwealth Avenue Boston, Massachusetts Could we ever forget the saying, Time, tide and Thibodeau wait for no man! I ' ll always remember Mr. Thibodeau ' s timely appearance at the corner of Canal and Causeway Streets in Boston one Sunday morning during 1943, when I was on my way back to the Navy. Learning that I had forgotten my money and train ticket, he gave me the money for the ticket. For his patient and unselfish contribution to education, I express the thanks of the class of 1942. Carl J. Evensen United States Government Service I worked with Mr. Earle T. Thibodeau for twenty- one years. It was always a pleasure to visit his classes. He taught history in a way that led his pupils to love their country and the American way of life. May God grant that he continue to influence and guide youth for many years to come. Charles Varney Former Superintendent of Schools Stoneham, Massachusetts Mr. Thibodeau is a man of integrity and determin- ation. He has not only led his students toward the ac- quisition of knowledge, but has striven to impart a sense of value to this knowledge. To Mr. Thibodeau, my gratitude and admiration. Captain William A. Seward, Jr. U. S. Air Force Arlington, Virginia “Tibby, in my day, taught algebra and American history and even took over a French class once. He rates the top of my list of teachers. It is indeed u pleasant privilege to be able to pay tribute to him. He was more than a teacher; he was our friend. Thomas Peter Devlin, M D. Middlesex County Examiner Stoneham, Massachusetts A teacher of learning and a friend of all, Mr. Thib- odeau through the years of my school life was truly an inspiration. My best wishes to a good friend and teacher. Camille D. Johnson Executive Secretary of the Warren Kay Vantine Studio Boston, Massachusetts
