Theres more to managmg a forest than t Iltlll tl'CCS. jup1a'g There are several things involved in managing a torest. Une, ot course, is plant- ing trees, and we plant more than we harvest. Many ot the trees we plant grow straighter, taller, taster and are healthier than any other lcind. They're called Super Trees. Another practice used in torest man- agement is prescribed burning. This is highly controlled and is performed only when the weather is just right. Prescribed burning clears litter, underbrush and weeds, reducing the chance ot wild tire. lt also prepares the land tor new growth, which in turn provides new tood supplies and nesting areas tor small game, Clearcutting is another practice of good torest management. Clearcutting is sim- ply a means ot harvesting our crop, just as 5... Q2 ...-ati'-' f-: -' '- ' 5 ...un a taimer harvests cotton or soybeans. But it isn't the only way to harvest trees. Some areas aren't suited to clearcutting and the trees are harvested individually. There are many practices in managing a forest. We just wanted you to know more about them.
