When Mike Dravis, jack Stephens, and john Prickett heard about the fifty dollar first prize offered in the MS Engineering Contest, they decided to give it a try. 'The contest involved the building of a model crane truss to be judged by the ratio of the weight of the model to the amount of weight it would support. For those who are not familiar with engineering, a crane truss is a structure designed to raise or lower weight vertically, such as to raise building material to the top of a sky- scraper. Although a real crane truss is made of steel, John, jack and Mike were restricted by contest regulations to Balsmwood and Elmer's glue . Designing original models can be tedious, for example , the wood had to be cut carefully with a razor blade to keep it from splitting. The boys spent about 3 months on paper work and planning and about a month on the actual building of the model. Sometimes they spent 12 straight hours working on their models. Of the three built, two were turned in and were judged 9th and 19th places of the 64 models entered in the contest in Jackson. They will be building models again this year and they say they're going to win. We hope they do. People fSeniors 131

CURT JAY OTJEN 8!15!6O-Football-1, 2, 3, 4, Track-1, Latin Club-4, S-Club-4, FFA-1, 2, 3, 4, Speechf. Drama-4. Fire-fighting is one of the most hazardous occupations in the United States today. However that fact doesn't stop Curt Otjen and Blake Alexander, CLu't and Blake have both been volunteer firemen in Stone County for about two years. To become firemen they had to pass a certain test which lasted six months. After this six-month testing period the other firemen had to vote them in. Four times a year Curt and Blake attend a State Academy in Jackson to learn about fire-fighting. They also meet every first and second Tuesday at the City Hall for local town meetings. When someone calls in to report a fire, the phone also rings in Curt and Blake's home . They deal with all kinds of fires throughout Stone County and sometimes surrounding counties if their help is needed.
