As a student he enlisted in the Navy's V-7 program, cotnmenc- ing active duty at the U.S. Navy Midshipmatfg School in October of 19412. He was commissioned Ensign, USNR, in February of 19-13. ln August of the same year, following further training in Diesel Engineering at Cornell Univer- sity and in Anti-Submarine VVarfare at Miami, lfloridzt, Idle was assigned as Engineering Oliicer of USS PC -181.
