The Tarzans and The Edison Vikings finished in a TirsT place Tie for The CiTy League championship. The Tarzans opened The league againsT The Franklin of STockTon YellowiackeTs. The blue and whiTe-clad hoopsTers of SHS won This game 32-l8. ATTer a very slow firsT half which found The Tarzans leading 8-6, The Cavemen caughT Tire and rolled away from The smaller Yellowiackefs. Jack Cheney mashed I3 poinTs while Conny Chambers looped in 6. ln The nexT game againsf Ben Franklin of Valleio, The Tarzans meT a rough and worThy Toe. Leading I5-l2 aT The half, SHS had iTs hands Tull Trying To sTay ahead of The Franklin Braves. The final score was Tarzans 36, Franklin 32. Jack Cheney was again high poinT man for The Tarzans wiTh I2 Tallies, while Conny Chambers followed wiTh 9. The Edison High Vikings were The Tarzans' nexT vicTim, bowing 34-22. The game was well played, buT Edison could noT seem To hiT on Their long shoTs. The Cavemen led 20-IO aT half Time. Jack Cheney and Rick Leary Tied Tor high poinT honors, each neTTing ll poinTs. The Tarzans nexT Took on The ST. Mary's Rams and whipped Them 30-24, in a close and exciTing game. The Tarzans only led ll-lO aT The half, buT lengThened ThaT lead To I8-l3 aT The end of The Third quarTer. Rick Leary led The scoring for The Tarzans wiTh I0 poinTs, while Connv Chambers snared 8. ln The highesT scoring game of The season, The Tarzans deTeaTed The Napa Preps, 48-40. The Tarzans held a 24-I7 half Time lead. Leading The scoring was Conny Chambers wiTh I5 poinTs To Jack Cheney's I4. The Cavemen really shiTTed inTo high gear againsT The Valleio Papooses, scalping Them 48-20. The Tarzans led 24-I2 aT The half and piled up a 34-I9 lead aT The end of The Third quarTer. Jack Cheney scored wiTh T4 poinTs for The Tarzans. ln The second meeTing beTween SHS and ST. Mary's The Tarzans were upseT 27-20. The Rams iumped inTo an early lead and were never headed. The Tarzans Trailed I7-I3 aT The half. Phil SanguineTTi meshed 6 poinTs for The Tarzans. The reTurn game againsT Franklin of STockTon was well played, buT The Tarzans ouT-classed The smaller YellowiackeTs To The Tune of 28-l9. The Cavemen led I2-9 aT The half. Jack Cheney neTTed Il poinTs. ln The season finale againsT Edison on The Edison courT, The Tarzans ran inTo a much improved Viking Team, losing 47-26. The Tarzans enfered The game aT a disadvanTage, having Two firsT sTring players sick in bed. Edison ran up an early IO To 4 firsT quarTer lead and had a 2l To I0 lead aT The half. Jack Cheney and DwighT Doerr wiTh 7 poinTs, each, Rick Leary wiTh 5, Tom Morgan wiTh 4, and Bob Korinke wiTh 3, did all The Tarzans' scoring. TARZAN BASEBALL REVIEW Season of I95l WiTh Two viTal games leTT To play in The l95l season, The STockTon High baseball Team has won Three games and losT Three. The Tarzans proved successful in beaTing Their cross-Town rivals, Edison. Twice: 8 To 5 and 5 To 4. They divided wiTh ST. Mary's, winning one I5 To 8 and losing one I4 To 4. The Caveman losT To Franklin oT STockTon, 7 To I, and To Franklin of Vallejo, 8 To 7. Games lefT on The' schedule are Valleio High laT Valleiol, and Franklin of STockTon laT EI Doradoi. The Team looked good in all deparTmenTs in Their winning eTTorTs, buT The piTching as a whole was inconsisTenT. The main burden fell on AnThony MaTTioli, who came Through wiTh Two good performances, boTh againsf The cross-Town rival, Edison. Phil SmiTh backed up MaTTy in good sTyle and received crediT Tor one of The Edison vicTories in relief. STarTing The season wiTh only Three leTTermen from lasT year's ForTy-niner and Ranger nines, The Tarzans soon were molded inTo a smooTh- working club by Coach John Guilfoyle. The veTerans were: Jack Cheney, shorTsTop: Sonny lDavel Janeiro, Third base: and Spook Uiml Willard, second base. Leading baTTer Tor The season, To daTe, is hard-hiTTing Jack Cheney, wiTh IO hiTs in 22 Times aT baT, for a .455 baTTing average. Tops in The cluTch was Bob Hargis, firsT baseman, whose 5 hiTs came when They were needed mosT. Spook Willard led in runs scored, crossing The plaTe 8 Times. OTher members of The Team include Jim Kenny, righT fiield: AJim Reynosa, cenTer field: DwighT Doerr, lefT field: Alex Linker, caTcher: and Phil SanguineTTi, uTiliTy ouTTielder. TARZAN SWIM.MING Since The change in The school sysTem, STockTon High has noT been able To compeTe in The waTer sporTs. This year, however, STockTon High has formed a swimming Team, coached by Mr. GordeT. Members of The I95l swimming Team are as follows: HerberT Thomas, David Davis, WalTer PaTTefson, Charlie Howell, Jay Taylor, Don SmiTh, Tom lnnes, Charles Wood, Chris Green, Glen Shellcross, Dale SwafTord and Romer Derr. Swimming The 25-yard freesTyle are WalTer PaTTerson. David Davis, and Romer Derr, who all show promise in The opinion of Mr. GordeT.
