Sr 11107 Mr Il107lf s FEBRUARY CLASS HISTORY OUR years ago 273 freshmen flooded the halls and campus of Stockton Hugh School They were greeted w1th a barrage of Wheres your elevator t1cket7 Get off the lawn two shades of green don t blend well together ordered to wear tags so they could be d1st1ngu1shed from the grass that caused them to stop and wonder nf they real ly wanted to be consrdered as lntelhgent per sons after all However they Hnally settled down to buslness and the February Class of 36 endeavored to leave 1tS mark on the school As a reward 179 students wlth measured tread and heads held hlgh FCCCIN ed dlplomas on the stage of the Clvlc Audr torlum Those who left then' personal mark on the hrstory were many and y armed each fol lowmg the field he was most sulted for so the d1es were cast for the mouldrng of hon ors Among those who were scholastlcally mlnded we haye ohn Blllones Italo Grlllo Umeko Tateyama and Merle Trayer rece1v mg gold seals on the1r drplomas ent1tl1ng them to l1fe membershxp 1n the Cahfornxa Scholarshlp Federatlon Many students also recelved gold mer1t seals on thtlr d1plomas certxfynng that they had been good cltxzens and had accomphshed outslde work that helped to benefit the school The athletes who recexved the hard worked for glory 1n sports were many Among them was a star who excelled nn three sports Italo Grlllo Italo was noted for h1s ablhty rn football h1s brllhance ln basket ball and h1s sk1ll 1n track He estabhshed a record rn the shot put that stands at thrs very moment H15 team mates ln football were ohn Arrazola Irv1ng Baucom Irv1ng Bennett Frank Bonf1ho Lou1s Denton1 B111 Papas Armando Parne and Rex Tan berg Those who starred wlth hmm 1n bas ketball were Irvmg Baucom ames ohns ton and Harry Kramar Bob Kenyon cov ered hlmself wlth honors ln pole yaultlng and lmmy Hammond represented the school 1n tenms Desrrmg to be governed by a capable hand the class as 12B s chose 1m Hammond pres1dent Harold WllllS XICC pres1dent and Lee Duffield secretary ThCjOUfH3l1SI1C3l ly mchned were Augusta Bengs Maryorle Cunn1ngham Claude Montgomery and B111 Scantlebury B111 and Augusta were mem bers of the honor socrety Qurll and Scroll Augusta sexvlng a term as pres1dent of that well known socleta Golng on to th flnal stage or to the coveted t1tle of IZA s the class was represented by the followmg oih eers pres1dent Lee Duffield uce presxdent 'Vlercedes Perkms secretary Florence Boyes XVh1le puttlng the fimshmg touches on thelr educatxon the class gave a senxor soc1al Th1s 1ncluded a dlnner followed by a dance and was rntended to create a feehng of fellowshrp among the sen1o1s and all agree that nt was a success Along wlth class act1v1t1es a few entered school government Chfford Trot ter a very capable student and outstandmg III personahty was elected pres1dent of the Student Body Jean Crary was pres1dent of the Glrls League Merle Tray er vrce presl dent of the Gnrls League and 1mm1e Bro kaw pohshed the trophnes as custod1an In the field of musnc a few excelled 1n therr classes Harold WllllS and Bob Rld dell fiddled thexr way to fame whlle lee Dufheld blew h1s on the trumpet accom pan1ed by Carroll Dretze and Alfred Dou badours were arded by the slngmg of Flor ence Boy es Margaret DeVoss Merle Trayer and Chfford Trotter Graduatron t1me rol led around wrth the 12B s cooperatmg wxth those graduatlng 1n g1v1ng one of the most enjoyed senlor proms The class play Grow 1ng Pams was presented to the amusement and admlratlon of all who saw rt It proved to be one of the most successful plays pre sented ln years Class day was featured by a sklt entltled The Last Round Up Composed of songs and speeches character1zed by the carefree eovs boy Splflt the class lnstory was FCVIGW ed Thls was cl1maxed by the deposltlng of n emorles 1n a box to retam the fame for years to come The elass plate was lald by I resldent Lee Duffield and all yomed IH smg mg Hall Blue and Whlte Cn commencement mght Harold W1lllS and Merle Trayer gave two yery rmpresslve speeches the d1plomas were handed out lean Crary was glven the Bausch and Lomb SC1 entnfic Medal and thus the class was duly chrxstened Hugh School Graduates 511 'I I 1 , 1. 7.
