Smnm Memories JUNE SENTUR PLAY 66 T Nea er Ra1ns was presented by the 1936 Iune graduatlng class as the1r senxor play Frlday May 15 The scene IS set ln Cahforma and the tltle IS taken from the behef of natn e Cahformans that It never rams 1n Callforma 1n a certaln season The cast was selected after 54 senlors formlng one of the largest groups ever to apply had trled out Wntten by Auranla Rouverol author of the successful February class play the product1on contalns the same llght touch regardlng adolescent emotlons Mr and Mrs Donovan played by Helen Davxes and Jack Blxnn come to sunny Cah fornla to vlsnt the Rogers famlly In the extensne corespondence carrled on between Mabel Rogers deplcted by Barbara Lanen and Mrs Donox an both women have gn en the lmpresslon of wealth When each finds that the other has been blufflng qulte an amus1ng sltuatlon results For mstance Hen ry Rogers Henry Temme under the ln fluence of this bel1ef sells a lot to Walter Donovan for one thousand dollars loan1ng h1m five hundred of lt XVh1le waltlng to be paxd back Rogers lends Walter Donovan all of h1s most cherlshed possessxons xnclud mg hlS clgars and car Fmally dur1ng a conversatlon both men admxt that they are pracucally broke and mdulge nn a brawl whxch IS stopped by the1r wlves Greatly lnsulted the Donovans leave the Rogers home At th1s cruclal t1me rlch and successful Dane Lawson taken by Lewns Morse ap pears on the scene Dane has been 1nd1cated by Mrs Rogers slnce the beg1nnmg of her marr1ed l1fe as the ldeal husband When he calls on Mrs Rogers unfortunately he has grown much stouter and sllghtly bald Howes er h1s worst SIU IS h1s complete behef that a man should be sole ruler an h1s own home and Mrs Rogers has sllghtly reversed pos1t1ons 1n hers faced wlth these qualltles Mrs Rogers decldes she prefers her husband But the adult troubles are mlnor when compared to those of the adolescent mem bers lmmy Rogers seventeen and young for h1s age IS plaved by Jack Ronald Thought through the first few scenes of the play to be a confirmed woman hater by h1s constant as o1dance of Norleen the v1llage vamp reallstlcally portrayed by Mary Ruth Marnell lmmy contradlcts all former 1m press1ons by deVelop1ng an alarmxng pass1on for Jane Carter who plays the part of Dor othy Donovan Dorothy reclprocates ln her feel1ngs and they declde to ask the1r parents lf they may marry If the parents refuse they w1ll elope Unfortunately the1r request IS refused and they are ready to go but at the last moment somethlng most unusual for Cahforma occurs It Rams The car ns also out of gas and refuses to run Faced w1th these dlfflcultles the pa1r declde to walt and marry later Durlng the t1me Dorothy has been stay 1ng at the Rogers house and attendlng col lege Mrs Rogers herself a member has 1nst1lled 1n Dorothy a great des1re to joln a certaln sororlty Norleen because of peal ousy contmually blackballs Dorothy but when she IS forced to resngn Dorothy IS taken m It IS thns that prevents lmmy s and Dorothy s secret marrlage as the soror 1ty passes a rule agamst secret marr1ages and as Dorothy says One can get marr1ed any t1me However everyth1ng ends happxlv as the ch1ldren are prom1sed that they may be marr1ed as soon as they graduate and the plece of property whlch caused so much trouble between the two famnlles proves to be of great value Although the cast or1g lnally called for a negro servant the part approprlately for th1s state was changed to a Japanese boy Bob Takahashl lent an out standmg and humorous touch to thxs Flne cooperatlon was glven by the bus 1ness concerns sol1c1ted for donat1ons and by the bus1ness staff wh1ch conslsted of Tack MCBf1dC bus1ness manager Sherwood Norton advertlslng manager Joe Rlsso stage manager Rlchard Rlddell asslstant stage manager and Jean Walcott pubhcnty manager The entlre cast responded well and gave excellent performances under L I Vannu c1n1 s d1rect1on A success both flnanclally and art1st1cally the product1on was a f1tt1ng culm1nat1on to the year Norma Canessa had charge of the wardrobe department The propertnes were supervlsed by Harold D1ckey and Barbara Quanl was Llbrarlan flqlzit F11 - 11 U ' ' Y ll . 1 J 1 - 1 1 ' t , 1 7 . . , .
