Text from Pages 1 - 152 of the 1979 volume:

THE DAY WAS A YEAR AT FIRST WHEN CHILDREN RAN IN THE GARDEN; THE DAY SHRANK DOWN TO A MONTH WHEN THE BOYS PLAYED BALL. THE DAY WAS A WEEK THEREAFTER WHEN YOUNG MEN WALKED IN THE GARDEN; THE DAY WAS ITSELF A DAY WHEN LOVE GREW TALL. THE DAY SHRANK DOWN TO AN HOUR WHEN OLD MEN LIMPED IN THE GARDEN; THE DAY WILL LAST FOREVER WHEN IT IS NOTHING AT ALL. Thank you to everyone who helped in creating this yearbook, I hope that as you turn the pages, memories of this school year fill your mind. To get down to the finals for the third year and win was a well deserved honor. Everyone was shocked at our loss to Polo, but we turned it around and made it our benefit. We really had the potential to win with a good offense and a great defense. With a 9-0 victory over Carlinville, everyone was elated. The support of the fans was outstanding. We want to congratulate the Stockton Blackhawks on a fabulous year. VOLLEYBALL 32 VARSITY ROW 1: P. Dawson, B. Brunner, S. Reid, J. Molitor, L. Fox, 6. Althof. Row 2: K. Molitor, T. Arand, B. Overall their record was 14-12. They had many close, exciting games and unfortunately lost four overtimes. The squad played well in the post considering the loss of two players from last year. Coach Va- laika seemed satisfied with this year's action but is already looking ahead for the next ball club. It should be a very aggressive team and might have a chance for first. Their standing record is 6-4 in the conference and 9-5 overall. It is fortunate to have consistent high point players who are June Magee, Kelly Molitor, Terese Woods, and Barb Brunner. Good team work has been shown the last twelve games. Coach Munson felt the team gelled sooner than he thought due to the fact that last year graduaued eight players. Next year's team will lose some height but will gain quickness. Also next year there will be two classes for Girls' Basketball which will give the team more of a chance for a berth in the state play-offs. Wres- tling Coach Benning said he was hoping for a larger turnout in the varsity team, but there were no disappointments. The junior varsity record was also hurt be- cause many of them were promoted to varsity. There were a number of good individual records however, among them being returning state champ at 185 lbs., Jeff Eastlick. Eastlick, Rick and Brian Pierce all made it to sectionals where Eastlick took 2nd and Rick and Brian Pierce lost out in the preliminary rounds. Eastlick went on to state com- petition and earned a very respectable 3rd place showing. Mike Woolcock also had a very good record but was stopped before districts with a pinched nerve in his neck. 47 GOLF: SPRING ’78 The Golf Team had a very successful '78 season. They lost only to Mt. Carroll, which was a non-conference meet. The team placed second in conference, only two strokes behind Lena. The Varsity squad consisted of Dan Mackeben as the number one golfer, Jeff Althof as second man, with Greg Baber, Mike Cahill, and Jon Althof rounding out the team. In the fall of '78, Richard Woods, Scott Logemann, Jeff Althof, and Jon Althof went to Districts and placed fifth out of the sixteen competing teams. The team has high hopes for '79 with an eye for recapturing the conference title. 48 GIRL’S TRACK SPRING ’78 49 50 This year we're losing a lot of good sprinters through graduation but we are looking to be strong in the mid- dle and long distance running events. The conference will be strong in track this year but Stockton should be improved with some freshmen with excellent potential. We look for- ward to being more competitive at the district level. Our conference finished third behind Dakota and Lena. Jane Stayner won the shot put. The Most Valuable Player Award was given to Lori Frazier. The captains were Nancy Schamberger and Connie Pierce. 51 Last year's track team ended their season at districts in Morrison by placing eighth out of twenty-five participating schools. The team's season record was 10-2, and they received a fourth in the conference. Broken track records included Tim Finn in the triple jump, Jeff Dower in the long jump, and Mark Herring, Doug Rowe, Ryan McPeek and Barry Brandt in the two mile relay. Track Coach Kaminski feels that this year's team will be a top contender in the conference. He is looking forward to strong long distance runners and a lot of depth in his sprinters. 54 CHEERLEADERS VARSITY: B. BRANDT, M. REES, A. WILCOX, L. MAPES. JV: D. BORSDORF, J. Mr. Valaika's first and sixth hour gym class had been studying self-defense and were in- vited along with students in study hall to watch. They showed us ba- sic self-defense moves with the as- sistance of Mike Schiess and Alan Hubb who are learning Tae-kwon- do. They broke boards of various thickness in half with hands and feet. The climax of the perfor- mance was when the head instruc- tor laid on a bed of nails with six layers of bricks piled on his chest. The bricks were then hit with a sledge hammer, astounding all when he showed no pain. The as- sembly was enjoyed by all. 127 DO YOU REMEMBER . . .
