MY AFS EXPERIENCE From January to June of 1975 I was an AFS ex- change student on the Domestic Spring Semester Program. My home was in Costa Mesa, California, with the Roger Hertzog family. The school I attended (Estancia High School) has approximately 2,200 students, and was very sports and academic minded. Facts about the city: population about 82,000 and growing (all cities run into one another, so it is hard to recognize boundaries) 2-5 miles from the Pacific Coast, 45 miles from Los Angeles (Disney- land, 10 miles) temperate climate; mainly residential with some commerce and light industry; predomin- antly white middle class with small Oriental and Mexican communities, and few Blacks. My adopted family was as follows: Father: Roger Hertzog, a design engineer for Alrec in Anaheim; Mother: Norma Hertzog, owner and director of two preschools. City Councilwoman for the city of Costa Mesa; Older Sister Susan: Married; Older Brother John: living away from home; Sister Elaine: 17, AFS student to New Jersey while I was in California; Younger Sister Carolyn: 10, only one home besides parents and me. To put it very lightly, being an AFS student was the most exciting and learning experience I have ever had. I have become more interested in and aware of what goes on around me. I realized while in California that I did not know much about the world outside of my isolated Stockton. Iam able now to look at things more easily from various points of view. My mind expanded greatly, and I believe I am a more understanding person than before I left. I can love, care and respect people more, including the friends I already had. I would encourage anyone who is interested in being an exchange student or hosting one, to find out more about the programs through our AFS advisor, Mrs. Finkenbinder, myself, or any other former ex- change student or host family. Any sophomore, junior, or senior may apply to be a Domestic Exchange stu- dent. The cost is approximately, $300.00 and there are programs for the spring semester, the fall semes- ter, and the summer program. Jane Majors 47 SENIORS - Row 1: T. Molitor, D. Dole, T. T. Grebner, K.
