MARGIE FINDS A HOME On the 19th of July it was a very apprehensive student who stood at the Johannesburg airport saying goodbye to family and friends. Many questions came into my mind about the year ahead of me, but I tried to face them with an open mind, which I will never regret. I expected the American way of life to be far more impersonal and sophisticated as the rest of the world is given the impression that everything is big in America, and one does not think places like Stockton where people are still interested in a close and friendly community life, still exists. And so, like many of the others, when I thought of the U. S. A. I thought of sky-scrapers and many people. Well, I came right down with a bump when the news arrived that I had been placed in a town of 1800, but believe me it turned out to be a very pleasant surprise. The way of life here is very similar to that in South Africa and it is really only the country life that is a little different to the city rat-race from where I come. I have grown to love Stockton and its people who have made me feel so much at home. Most people expected it to be a hard adjustment from a big city to a small town, but I seem to have settled down very well and like the country. Thanks to my great family, The Herrings, I have seen quite a bit of America. I was so taken by Mackinac Island which I hope to come back to someday and the beauty of Florida. Up till now the cold weather has frightened me off a little, but I've had the opportunity to go skiing and now can't wait until the snow falls heavily. I will miss these opportunities when I go back home. I want to take this opportunity to thank many of the people of Stockton who have helped me to get along and keep smiling. I shall never forget this wonderful experience, and the next time I leave home it will be a far more confi- dent student who says, goodbye .
