The rest of the staff included: Sally Vander- heyden, Peggy Broshous, Jewel Spencer, Phil Gothard, Kay Knapp, Layne Bonvillain, Dave Aurand, Jean Enright, Connie Brunner, Margie Chouler, Brenda McKinney, Pat Leitzen, Steve Midthun, Becky Felt- meyer, Linda Hill, Kathy Schaefer, Mary Jo Marcure, Ron Hill, Jan Hess, Tom Branthaver, Kim Bauden, Perry McPeek, Don Lowe, Ellen McPeek, Mike Wickler, Kim Lawfer. The staff was divided into 9 Boards--News, Special Feature, Satire- Humor, Review, Art, Business, Typing, Stencil, and Printing. Articles were brought in and approved by Wednesday, stenciled and run off Thursday night, and released in completed form on Friday. The paper was published weekly. This year, the Arrowhead featured The Reviews, in which a number of new (or old and undiscovered) books, movies, and record albums were brought to the attention of SHS public. The award- winning novelette, 150-West was reproduced by permission as a con- tinuing series over a 5 issue period. The paper also featured a Where Are They Now? column which told the where-abouts and what-abouts of the Class of 1971. The staff would like to express its appreciation to Mr. Minor, the advisor, and to everyone who helped make Arrowhead 71-72 an enjoyable experience. ARROWHEAD 13 BLA CKHA WK .. .Annual Staff policy was changed this year. It is now run by an all-school staff, where formerly it was run only by Juniors and Seniors. Problems encountered by this year's staff ran from no pictures, to no money, to no ads, to no deadlines met, to no one present at work nights, to no theme. On the other hand, we finally got croppers and pro- portion wheels. We also had a movie day to raise money. We may have no theme, but we do keep 2 pica margins in between all pictures! 14 15 FRONT ROW: Connie Brunner-Vice President, Marsha Schwitz-Secretary, Lynette Stiefel-Program Chairman, Barb Kepner-Treasurer, Jeff Boldt-Project Chairman, Brenda McKinney- Patient, Marcia Harrison-President, Gynel Dole, Ellen McPeek, Ann Finkenbinder, Leonia Brown, Donna Posey, Mrs. Warren Harrison-Advisor. Over the sum- mer, we strove to keep our town clean by collecting the towns- people's glass. This process was continued through the winter. We also had two ditch pick-ups to make our country a little nicer to live in. We hope to see this club continue in the coming years and become stronger with the coming of each new class. They check out books, return them to the shelves, keep the shelves in order, and repair worn-out volumes. Once a week a bulletin board is put up to enhance the beauty of the library and to enlighten the students of SHS on different aspects of school life. The club also sells paperbacks to finance a trip at the end of the year. Mrs. Werkheiser, advisor, is always willing to teach the girls new things about the library world. The officers pictured above are Jewel Spencer, treasurer; Connie Brunner, vice-president; Elaine Hayes, president; and Jeanne Buske, secretary. 19 20 HA NDS A CR OSS THE WA TER A F S The AFS Officers, (PICTURED ABOVE) Mrs. Thomas, advisor; Tom Branthaver, president; Anita Borsdorf, secretary-treasurer; Margie Chouler, AFS scholar; and Brenda McKinney, vice-president spent the past year working in conjunction with the community American Field Service Chapter to raise funds that Stockton may continue to have a foreign exchange student. The money also helps to finance a Stockton student who goes abroad. Some of the past projects have been gypsy baskets, Tag Day, and new this year, an international dinner. 22 MARGIE FINDS A HOME On the 19th of July it was a very apprehensive student who stood at the Johannesburg airport saying goodbye to family and friends. Many questions came into my mind about the year ahead of me, but I tried to face them with an open mind, which I will never regret. I expected the American way of life to be far more impersonal and sophisticated as the rest of the world is given the impression that everything is big in America, and one does not think places like Stockton where people are still interested in a close and friendly community life, still exists. And so, like many of the others, when I thought of the U. S. A. I thought of sky-scrapers and many people. Well, I came right down with a bump when the news arrived that I had been placed in a town of 1800, but believe me it turned out to be a very pleasant surprise. The way of life here is very similar to that in South Africa and it is really only the country life that is a little different to the city rat-race from where I come. I have grown to love Stockton and its people who have made me feel so much at home. Most people expected it to be a hard adjustment from a big city to a small town, but I seem to have settled down very well and like the country. Thanks to my great family, The Herrings, I have seen quite a bit of America. I was so taken by Mackinac Island which I hope to come back to someday and the beauty of Florida. Up till now the cold weather has frightened me off a little, but I've had the opportunity to go skiing and now can't wait until the snow falls heavily. I will miss these opportunities when I go back home. I want to take this opportunity to thank many of the people of Stockton who have helped me to get along and keep smiling. I shall never forget this wonderful experience, and the next time I leave home it will be a far more confi- dent student who says, goodbye . The chapter’s theme was Our World--A Growing Heritage. The year's activities started out with a weiner roast in August. No- vember 10 was the Initiation-Potluck Supper. Mrs. Jeanine Gastmann, a graduate of Patricia Stevens, was the guest speaker. She is the fashion coordinator at Weise's-Read's in Rockford. The FHA Rally was held on November 13 in Pearl City with 32 girls from Stockton attending. Our chapter won a Gold Certificate for the previous year’s activi- ties. During the year the club was responsible for a skit for a pep session, candy sales, and our part in the FHA-FFA Royalty Dance in December which featured the Sound Street. Service projects for the year included trips to St. Francis' Orphanage in Freeport, sponsoring a Story Hour in the Stockton Township Library, and sending Christmas Cards to our servicemen overseas. Lorri Rhyner and Elaine Hayes represented the Stockton chapter at the Illinois State Leadership Convention which was held June 16-18 at Illinois State University in Bloomington. The Blackhawks started the season like a lamb losing 26 to 27 to Lena but ended it like a lion winning the next eight games. The high point of the season had to be the game against Aquin. If the Blackhawks got past Aquin, they had a pretty good chance to finish the season in first place. It was Stockton's homecoming, and the mighty Blackhawks were not to be denied pushing the Bulldogs back to a 18 to 6 loss. The Blackhawks claim success through hard work, dedication, and team spirit. 48 JV FOOTBALL FRONT ROW: Brian Green, Ed Schoenhard, Perry McPeek, Jerry Enright, Gary Timpe, Fred Borsdorf, Brock Eshle- man, Mgr. BACK ROW: Terry Schlichting, Kurt King, Denny Wampfler, Mike Beeth, Bill Rausch, Curt Steffes, Keith Aubrey, Jim Hotze. Once again the JV football team enjoyed a winning season with a 4-3-2 record. One of Stockton's best played games was a 19-19 tie against the undefeated conference champs, the Galena Pirates. Freshman Eddie Schoenhard and Sophomore back Kurt King did most of the scoring as the team finished third offensively in the ten team league. Middle linebacker Bill Rausch led the defensive statistics with an average of ten tackles per game. The 1971-1972 edition of Blackhawk Bas- ketball was noted for an exciting type of run and shoot basketball. Led by the scoring of co-captains Dave Endress and Pete Valaika and the rebounding of Rick Polhill, they were able to amass a per game average of 80 pts. 53 J. V. BASKETBALL The JV’s came on strong after losing three of their first five games to end the season with a 14-6 won-lost record. They showed a balanced scoring attack, with four players averaging in double fig- ures, and quickness on defense as they out-rebounded their opponents in all but five games. Not getting into the conference tournament finals was the biggest disappointment of the season. However this was overcome to some degree as they ended the season by defeating Thomson and gaining a tie for first in the league standings. Its only two defeats were a one-point decision to Stillman Valley, who was later defeated, and another to a stronger Dixon team. As a team, they outscored their opponents 437-164 and won 215 matches, lost 96, and tied 5. The team sent three wrestlers to the Sectional Tournament at Moline, Perry McPeek, the first District champion, Jim Raab, and John Vanderheyden.
