The sixty members of the Library Club keep all the shelves in the middle school instructional materials center and in the high school library in proper order. Each member has an assigned section which she must dust and check over at least once a week. Other duties the student librarians perform to keep the libraries running more smoothly include checking out books, returning them to the shelves when they are returned, and repairing worn volumes. They send out overdue notices and keep up a school scrapbook. The year-round sale of paperbacks is one of their money-making projects. Each April the group visits either a high-school, college, or public library, or some other educational institution, and then spends part of the day shopping and enjoying a dinner together. While they very ably assist Mrs. Werkheiser, they are also gaining invaluable information in the use of a library, enabling them to locate answers to their own research problems in high-school and perhaps later in college. A beautiful mural, of a knight in shining armor, was used as a backdrop for pictures. The sophomores provided services such as serving at the banquet, taking tickets, serving punch at the dance and cleaning up. They were dressed as serfs with felt hats, booties, bloomers, and rag shirts. The King and Queen were led to their thrones on a red carpet and were seated with the entire royalty. The queen and her court. Is it straight yet? Freshmen zero in on first place. Our fearless cheerleaders. HOMECOMING COURT: Freshman attendant Marsha Schwitz, Junior attendant Marybeth Schwitz. Queen Dixie Wulff, Senior attendant Paula Hudson, Sophomore attendant Sherry Herring. Once upon a time in the village of Stockton, a lovely and enchanting queen and her four ladies-in-waiting paraded through the streets while the crowd cheered them on. Later the same day, she and her court viewed a most spectacular display of muscular prowess exhibited by her many fearless knights. As her brave army surged onward with crushing might against some rather helpless Bulldogs, her subjects roared for more. Soon the representatives of Aquin, the nursery school that had come to challenge the queen's regiment, could take no more. They crawled home, their tails behind them, broken and defeated, amidst ecstatic Stockton fans. And so, this crisis passed. The queen and her court lived happily ever after. Moral: Victory always takes the side of beauty! 82 I eojv KAe vj UXXAAJO August 21, 1969, a guy arrived in the sunny weather of Stockton, after two and a half months of terribly cold winter in his country (about 45 degrees - the coldest). Although he had studied English for seven years, he couldn't understand it unless it was spoken about five words a minute. For that reason he didn't have to take any test in U.S. History for one month because it was very difficult to match his five words a minute understanding with the 1,200 of Mr. Bretl. Little by little he could understand better. But he got smart, and when something wasn't convenient for him he said, I don't understand. And it was difficult to understand that he had said he didn't understand. But one day, Mr. Andrews asked him the same question in Spanish, and since that day, it wasn't funny anymore, and the game was over. Then, the play came, and he was the old man, and for a long time, instead of being called by his name, he was called Daddy. He wanted to see snow very badly. He had never seen it before, and he'll never forget that morning in news analysis class when Mr. Gilbertson said by the loudspeaker that if he looked outside through the window, he could see the white stuff coming down. That day he couldn't know what was going on in class anymore - he was outside playing in the snow. He'll never forget either when he froze one ear because he didn't wear a hat, or the many nice fall downs on the icy streets. Did you guess who that guy was? Yes, it was Juano, a Uruguayan boy who will never forget the wonderful people of Stockton, the wonderful family he was lucky to live with one year long, and the many, many friends he made. Yes, because now he's half Stocktonite, too. Till next time, very soon I hope, Chau. The black part is an oil slick. Juano confers with the establishment. 1,2-1.2. 3. 4-1. 2-1.2. 3. 4 - keep those knees up! Strike up the band. Although no game was unimportant or written off in anticipation as a win, the Aquin, Dakota, and Lanark games were of major importance in the race for the conference crown. The season had started with a shaky 22 to 14 win over Lena-Winslow in which our team showed little poise or perfection. Warren was next on the agenda and would supposedly pose the biggest threat they had been able to muster for some years. With this idea ringing in our team's ears and thoughts of the last week's performance in mind, the cautious but hungry Blackhawks invaded the Warren field and came home with an impressive 42-0 win and a little more confidence and poise. Galena was in the firing sights now. They were a strong team and a threat. But the Pirates were sunk in the wake of a developing Stockton juggernaut. The Galena threat failed to materialize, and the game ended with the Blackhawks clinching a mud-soaked 36-0 decision. It was now Homecoming and high noon for Stockton and Aquin. Being each other's proverbial nemesis and archrivals, the game was up for grabs. A question mark still dominated everyone's minds at half-time when the Blackhawks went to the dressing room with only a slim lead and three unrecovered fumbles on punt returns in the record books. However, 24 minutes after the second half began, Stockton walked triumphantly off the field with 41 hard-earned points to Aquin's 0. As in the previous games, Stockton annihilated Durand 70-0, Orangeville 49-0, and Pearl City 30-0. No major threat had materialized, and all were anticipating the Stockton-Dakota clash. Spirits were high, palms were wet, newspapers predicted, feature stories wore headlines like Something's Got to Give When Two Grid Giants Clash. It did! The game was a crowd-pleaser. It was a see saw battle with Stockton drawing first blood at the opening of the second quarter. However, the fans were left stunned on the last play of the half when a Stockton field goal attempt was blocked and run back for a touchdown by a Dakota speedster. The conversion attempt was successful and Stockton was behind 6-7 at the beginning of the second half. But, the challenge was met, Stockton scored again in the teeth rattling battle, and the fans went home yelling We're number one. But they weren't yet. Stockton had only a share of the title clinched, and the most important game was a week away. Would beaver-power gain revenge for the year before when Stockton knocked Lanark out of the ranks of the undefeated? Would John O'Boyle's boys bring the trophy home? Spines were tingling from the excitement as well as the cold as the opening kickoff was returned. Lanark proved to be a deserving competitor but not a champion. The final count was tallied at 38-0. The Stockton fans and players again walked off the field chanting We're number one. They were. 104 Tricky legs . . . Swift legs . . . Pass protection . . . HONORABLE MENTION, ALLSTATE T. An extremely mobile and mature Frosh-Soph team under Coach Emery Munson also produced a superior record during the 1969 gridiron season. The highlight of the season was the Aquin-Stockton game in which Stockton scored 48 points. Up to this this time, Aquin had not been scored on. At this point the squad members were determined and confident they could win the conference crown — probably somewhat over-confident at times. This group consisted of many fine football players who showed much promise for the future. The twenty-two sophomores that finished the season have not tasted the bitter pill of defeat in two years of football competition. The freshmen gained valuable experience, and they are now determined to continue winning football games next year. We expect much fine football from these undefeated conference champs next year. Now get out there and . . .! This was accomplished by defeating Warren twice by scores of 41-10 and 44-3, defeating Amboy once, 26-25, Dakota twice, 29-25 and 32-12, and by defeating Stillman Valley once, 33-16. The Blackhawks also placed second in the Polo Tournament and the Freeport-Galena Tourney, third in the Savanna Tournament, and sixth in the Lanark Invitational Tournament. These wins seem much more impressive when one realizes that five of the varsity wrestlers were first year men. With only two seniors on the varsity squad (Bill Logemann and Richard Reusch), most of the team will be eligible to wrestle again. This makes next year the most promising so far. 118 Bill shows his style. Everyone worries before a tough match. Wrestling for Stockton Everybody pulls for a . . . . . Victory!!! 119 nxxjcJk ROW 1 D.
