David Thoreau National Honor Society Each spring the National Honor Society sponsors an assembly program during which new members are inducted into this national organization. In the presence of parents, faculty, and friends, those students who have demonstrated outstanding qualities of character, leadership, service, and scholarship are called to the stage to receive the insignia of membership. Being chosen as a member of this society is the highest honor a high school student can receive. The goal of the Student Council is to be an effective means of communication between the faculty and the student body. During this school year the council organized an assembly program and a scholarship fund. They were also instrumental in having the Board of Education officially name the school colors of Stillwater Central Maroon and White. 66 Library Club Most members of the Library Club are students in the seventh grade. They help Miss Main, the librarian, with many of the routine tasks involved in running the library while they provide a helpful service to the school. Secretarial Service Club Under the guidance of Mrs. Mormile, the members of the Secretarial Service Club volunteer their typing skills for the faculty and school organizations. In doing this, the students learn how to use their abilities in practical situations. This will benefit them whether they take a business position immediately after graduation from high school or decide to attend college. 67 Teamwork is as important in the band as it is on the athletic field. Everyday about 65 students meet in the auditorium and strive for perfection as they practice under the skillful baton of Mr. Saetta. The band performs at pep rallies, football games, area schools, the annual winter and spring concerts and local parades. Each section is given an opportunity to display its talents as they are featured in arrangements which are a mixture of traditional and modern tunes. Percussion Brass Math Club Any senior high student who has that certain fascination for math has an opportunity to join the Math Club. This club's primary purpose evolves from the belief that math CAN be fun. Meetings are generally held at the convenience of the members and their advisor, Mrs. Bean. A regular meeting is centered on math puzzles and discussions concerning careers in math. Math oriented parties are held very frequently. Paris- Bound Students 69 Earning a letter in at least one sport makes an athlete at S.C.S. eligible for memoership in the Varsity Club. Having earned his letter, he must then undergo several days of rigorous initiation. Then if he is accepted unanimously by the members, he becomes a member of this organization whose main purpose is to promote good sportsmanship and school spirit. Those girls who excel in leadership, sportsmanship and gymnastic ability usually are members of the Girls Leaders Association. By serving as aids to Mrs. Trombley, the advisor, they help out in the gym classes and the intra-mural program. During the year they raise money to support those girls who participate in Sports Days. Through their work in this club, the girls learn that the success of an organization depends upon active participation of all members. 70 ATHLETICS In this fresh evening each blade and leaf looks as if it had been dipped in an icy liquid greenness. David Thoreau The 1972 Warriors with 11 senior members fought to a 5-3 record. Although they lost two heartbreakers that cost them the championship, they had some big wins; one against Schuylerville (34-6) and another against Greenwich (43-6). ' 1 Varsity Cheerleaders a d A group of energetic girls can always be seen at athletic events p and pep rallies boosting the spirit of the student body and athletes. They are the Varsity and Junior Varsity cheerleaders. They participated in a number of successful pep rallies and were I proud to support the Mighty Warriors. s Junior Varsity Cheerleaders 76 Donna Maura Senior Cheerleaders Karen Cathy Varsity Basketball As the 72 - 73 season progressed, the Stillwater Warriors grew in strength putting together a 3 game winning streak and scoring over 90 points in each of 2 consecutive games. Although the team has not broken any records, their hustle, determination and never-say-die spirit made them a definite threat to their opponents. With a tremendous amount of potential returning next year, die Warriors should certainly be a top contender for a number one spot in the league. 78 Junior Varsity GARY CARPENTER DAVE CONLEY RICKY NELSON LARRY SLOCUM 79 Varsity Baseball Team A poor season was predicted for the Stillwater Varsity Baseball Team because of lack of experience and returning lettermen. However, with a good balance of hitting and pitching, they pulled through a 10-8 season. This included the defeat of the second ranked team in the state and invitation to the Section II Sectionals. The team of 1973 shows much promise for an excellent season. JV Baseball Team COCAPTAIN PAUL Mr. Schmidt’s matmen again came up with a bevy of outstanding individual performers and a winning season that Stillwater can be proud of. In the Maple Hill Christmas Tournament, the Stillwater matmen placed 1st after being 5th last year. The acquisition of a new mat nas had a fine effect on the morale of this year's team. This year extends the winning record of the wrestling season to four consecutive years. Track Team COACH MacDOUGALL One of the most underrated teams at S.C.S. these dedicated athletes work out each afternoon in the spring. The members of the track team develop good mental attitudes of endurance, which are vital not only in distance running but also in other activities and pursuits. Frequent meets keep the boys working hard. Under the fine coaching of Mr. Mac Dougall the members of this team learn to discipline themselves and their attitudes. The students at S.C.S. have good reason to be proud of their track men! Sports Few of us are faster than a speeding bullet, more powerful than a locomotive or able to leap tall hurdles at a single bound; we are not supermen, but sportsmen. We play to win, but even more, just because we love to. ELEMENTARY To me, every hour of light and dark is a miracle, Every cubic inch of space is a miracle. Walt Whitman MRS.
