W. Churchill As the flame of a candle is extinguished, leaving only a trailing wisp of smoke, so our high school days are coming to a close and will soon leave us with only the fragile wisp of our memories. Now it is time for us to turn our attention to the future with a determination to use our knowledge, our youth and our enthusiasm to find solutions for the problems now troubling mankind. In a world where pessimisn and protest seem to have become a way of life, we believe that the members of the Class of '71 will make a real contribution toward making this world a better, brighter place. With confidence and hope, we. The Members of the Class of '71 of Stillwater Central School, dedicate ourselves and our 1971 Warrior to the creation of a world free of problems of pollution, poverty and injustice. . . . wo U goes luW fa katuL with (jun, A d 0o g xe Ke wi)fti TW OAfij tkb Ijiultjjul MOmS 0 hj thb 8 tkfij youitg ijfeCwi, LjfeOAi u4tftK tZ M day afJ’Ai to wiow'. 10 ADMINISTRATION D istnidb Qa Alkdfij jdt U u P. Loud, happy rollicking music. The whole music wing vibrates with the combined efforts of these earnest artists. The students in the band get a full credit for doing this every day. It isn't often you get paid for doing something you like! f-fo KW SoCfetiJ The man who said, Anything worth having is worth working for” could have had the National Honor Society in mind. When a student is initiated into this society, he knows that he has earned this honor through hard work and diligence. To become a member of this society, a student must not only maintain a high average but show through his leadership, his service to the school and to the community, and his high moral character that he is an outstanding member of his class. In some respects a high school is very much like a village or a community. Problems develp, are realized and, through a legislative body, are often resolved. The Student Council acts not only as the legislative body for the high school but as a clearing house for new ideas presented to the administration by the students. QqC iotCt dOtl; Q uicC Club The Secretarial Service Club consists of a group of students who wish to improve their secretarial skills. They do this by performing various jobs for the faculty and other groups. In this way the students are able to help others while helping themselves to become more skilled in their chosen field. Liiyuuuj Club Running a library is no easy task. Although our librarian is highly competent, she doesn't have 30 pairs of hands with which to mark books. Nor does she have 30 pairs of legs with which she can run all over the halls tracking down overdue books and the culprits involved. The members of the library club do. They are a group of students with endless energy. The Yearbook Staff is a group of seniors concerned with composing an interesting and memorable keepsake - the 1971 Warrior. Together with their advisor, Mrs. Butler, they worked many long hours compiling a tribute to the school and to their class. After the rush of meeting deadlines and the hectic pace, they hope that they have presented a publication that will be enjoyed by all who read it. Many students prefer after school activities which provide concrete results. The Photography Club supplies these concrete results in black and white. ” EcoJoyy Club Stillwater has noticed! Stillwater has long noticed that our Hudson has been polluted along with countless other rivers and lakes. Stillwater realizes that it is up to its youth to make the community aware of the problem of pollution and the upsetting of nature's balance. Now there is a club that is doing just that. S.C.S. knows that to overcome a problem, it first must be faced. The Ecology Club is doing that. -i Fv wiaj Fctme iS Since Stillwater is primarily a rural area, farming plays a large part in the lives of many of the Stillwater Central School. Because of this, a Future Farmers of America Chapter was organized in Stillwater. This club discusses the problems that face today's farmers and tries to help supply our young agriculturists with the knowledge to cope with them. lyiduSbdo Club A finely hand-crafted cabinet or table is as much a work of art as a sculpture or an oil painting. The creation of all of these items takes time, patience, and unusual talent. This unusual talent is cultivated in the Industrial Arts Club. The club provides a means for turning creative ability to a practical use. 67 New6paf eA Club The Newspaper Club consists of an editor, a co-editor and a group of students who have a desire to be heard. A paper is published monthly by the students and acts as a sounding board for all of SCS , teachers and students alike, Topics discussed range from the Vietnam War to how the band sounded at the last dance. The Warriors have dubbed their paper, appropriately enough, The War Whoop. dub When Abe Lincoln's animated Inaugural Address rolls across the screen backwards, whom does the frustrated Social Studies teachers call? A member of the Audio-Visual Club. The members of this club are skilled in the use of Stillwater's mechanical teaching aids: movie and filmstrip projectors, etc. ... The club is an informal one whose main purpose is to see that S.C. S. 's movies go reeling smoothly along. SPORTS Football ’70 The Stillwater football team completed a successful season under Coach Lilac in his first year as Varsity mentor. The team ended die season 3-2 in the Washington County League and 4-3 overall. Thirteen Senior players have helped the team immensely during the season. The Junior Varsity squad under Coach Schmidt also had a successful season. They won 2, lost 2, and tied 1. It is their job to help the Varsity cheerleaders during football and to cheer for the Junior Varsity basketball team. 74 VoA ity Bct ketbM To the spectator, basketball means lots of excitement and cheering, but to the player it means much more than this. Basketball is many long hours of exhausting practice, high hopes and sometimes the frustrating feeling of defeat that comes with a close but losing score. The 71 Warrior Basketball Team is a young team known not for its size but for its hustle. They have made a fine showing this season winning four league games and losing four by a very close margin. S.C.S. is proud of the '71 Warriors. GLENN BREWSTER QoMttyv Pfi ye tS JOHN WHALEN Vft iSEfcy Baseball '70 Under the leadership of Coach Jim Matties, the 1970 Varsity Baseball Team ended the season with the splendid record of 14 wins and 3 losses. Repeating the pattern set in 1969, the Warriors once again won the Washington County League Championship. The team also won the Class D, Section II championship, A successful season was also enjoyed by Coach Lilac's Junior Varsity Team. By the end of the season these players had piled up an enviable record of 10 wins and only 4 losses. During the season many records were broken — the 100 yard dash in 10 seconds flat by Jim Baker and the 880 yard relay by Jim Baker, Jim Brown, John Herrick, and Bob Maher. The team tempered in the sectionals, winning the Section D - 880 relay and the 100 yard dash. From there the winners progressed to the Section II finals at Mont Pleasant. With many members of last year's team returning, the Warriors should have plenty of potential to win and set new records this year. ’70 JIM BAKER TIM GREGG TIM SHEEHAN T u TERRY WHITLEY FRANCIS ZAGORSKI oj 1970-1971 During the school year, many girls who wish to increase their athletic abilities join Intramurals. But they also join Intramurals for another reason - they enjoy sports. Intramurals consist of many types of sports including soccer, volleyball, basketball, gymnastics, softball, track and field, and archery. The girls are under the guidance of Mrs. Broad - their advisor. JtmifW f-lLgk fit Vo tstfy Club To be eligible for membership in the Varsity Club, a boy must have earned at least one letter in a varsity sport. Then he must receive the unanimous vote of the other members of the club. By becoming a member, he has a duty to promote school spirit and good sportsmanship. Gink'IPjOdfiM The Leaders Club consists of those girls chosen by their advisor, Mrs. Broad. Before being selected, each of the girls is considered on the basis of her leadership qualities.
