ff f senv Q Q ,-111 iii we 7fU0,.J The USS Stickell QDDR 8883 started out as a conventional Cearing Class 'DD' in October, 1945. When the Korean War broke out, she was ordered to WestPac to take part in the seaborne war of attri- tion against the North Koreans and Chinese Reds. She had an excellent record during Korean War operations, and in late 1952 returned to Long Beach Naval Shipyard where she underwent con- version to a 'DDR'-a radar picket ship. Recommissioned a 'DDR' on 1 Sep- tember, 1953, the Stickell underwent shakedown training at San Diego and later participated in various 'minor'jobs such as plane guard, etc. Following a short cruise back to Long Beach and to Christmas leave, 'scuttle- but' could be heard throughout the ship about a coming world cruise. Evidently this was true because on January 21, 1954, the Captain followed three ships of DesDiv 21 out of San Diego Harbor and we didn 't see the States again for about seven months.
