Stewartville High School Class Of 1970 JUNIOR-SENIOR HIGH ADDITION A long-awaited day arrived on January 5, 1970. After Christmas vacation, we were able to occupy a part of the New Junior-Senior High Addition, which greatly relieved the congestion and en- abled our seventh graders to stay in our own building all day instead of spending .1 half day in St. Bernard's Education Building. The special education class, sixth grade section, and Vocational Counselor Office were also moved to the High School Building. Three new science rooms were opened, giving more adequate room for general science, biology, and chemistry-phy- sics. Two spacious art rooms were put to use for the first time. Two new bus- iness education rooms were opened for us, and one business education room was occupied by a sixth grade. The auto mechanics and metal-working shop and wood-working shop, with ad- jacent classroom, result in more room and more adequate equipment than we have had before. Many additional lock- ere have been added so pupils no longer need to share. New central offices were completed several weeks later, which resulted in more office space for high school prin- cipals and counselors. Additional music rooms became avail- able by mid-February. A large choral room, a general music classroom, and four practice rooms enable us to carry on a much better music program. Also opened at this time were two additional shop rooms for electricity and mechan- ical drawing. With continued progress, we expect the library, audio-visual area and the new lunchroom and kitchen will be com- pleted for use by the end of March. We are all very well pleased with the fine modem facilities and the benefits we all derive from them. However, this title denoted rapid growth in the school. Twenty years ago the total number of teachers that taught in Stewartville Public Schools was 21; today we have 42 alone in the high school and 86 on the entire faculty. The increase of teachers ac- counts for the increase of sub- jects taught and services ren- dered. We've added new sub- jects in nearly every academic area. The $1,100,000 addition of new school facilities pro- viding teachers and students with space, equipment and leadership, will be a profit to all in the many years to come. MR. Homecoming Queen candidates were Bonnie Barthleme, Maureen Carr, Dorothy Dormody, Jenny Nichols, and Karen Mullenbach. Jenny Nichols was crowned Queen Jenny I by Co-Captains Steve Blakely and Pat Carry at the Coronation Ceremony on Thursday October 2. On Friday afternoon, the Homecoming Parade (one of the finest in recent years) wound its way through the business district. First prize for float construction was won by the Junior Class, with the Sophomores and Seniors tying for second. In a very exciting football game, the fighting Tigers put up a tremendous struggle, but finally fell to a strong Kenyon 24-8. Following the game, the students and Alumni concluded the Homecom- ing celebration by dancing to the music of the Fourth Adventure. By Christmas vacation all the materials were ordered and the artists (and non- artists) painted, measured, drew', and worried over the yards and yards of white paper and gallons of paint. But the Odyessy Eternal was indeed a very pretty and successful prom. 33 Junior Class Play On November 7th, the jun- ior class presented it's class play, The Curious Savage by John Patrick. The play, about a scheming family which tries to have its mother committed to an in- sane asylum in order to gain control of her money, is humorous, but has a heart- touching ending. Members of the cast included the family: Kathy Dunn as Mrs. Savage, Rhonda Nickel as Lily Belle, Danny Malcom- son as Titus, and Greg Malone as Samuel. The 'guests' of the asylum: Jan Wolfgram as Fairy May, Sharon Walker as Mrs. Paddy, Julie Ottjes as Florence, Kim Waltman as Jeff, and Terry Jensen as Hannibal. The administra- tion: Wayne Holtan as Dr. Emmet, and Debbie Peter- son as Miss Willie. Student Director was Melodie Cot- trel, and Director was Miss Sandra Braaten. 35 UNDERCLASSMEN 37 ROW 1: R. They put on the best dance of the year, using the theme, The Zodiac . Home- coming was full of activities, but our float had a few problems?! The enthusiasm of the freshmen this year will surely keep them rolling till they graduate as the Class of 73. Patti Bob Debbie Simon Swenson King s o p H O M O R E S The sophomore class fared well in various activities throughout the whole year. The sophomores had a great party, and their float entry, which was Snappin' for a Victory , took second place in the Homecoming vestiviti«s. The sophomores are looking forward to the exciting activities they will encounter during their junior year. 44 OFFICERS C. Thompson D. Hanken J. McDonnough ROW 1: TOP: C. Helland, V. Turgeon, J. The Band, with flag carriers, majorette, and twirlers, about 85 in all, began preparation the first week in June. Rehearsals were held at either 6:30-8:00 A. M. or 7:00 to 9:00 in the evenings. Two weeks before the Aquatennial Parade there were rehearsals 5 days a week. Stewartville was rated 5th in the High School Division. The majority of the Bands and marching Units were from Minnesota, but there were out of state bands: the Sidney, Nebraska, High School Band and the band from New Stanton, Florida. Stewartville was one of the smallest schools of 20 Bands in the High School Division. Congratulations on a fine showing against very stiff competition. A (y i MARCHING TIGER BAND L i __ ROW 1: L. ALL-STATE CHORUS Diane Helland, a senior at S.H.S. represented Stewartville and District 3 this past summer in the D All-State Choir, a group of 140 singers from high I schools in Minnesota. In order to be selected Diane A had to audition and then comptet with all schools N in District 3. £ The All-State Choir met at Bemidji the first week H in August and held 3 practices a day for 2 hours and E then presented a concert on Sunday afternoon. The L director for this years' program was Robert de L Cormier, a well-known conductor and composer. A N One side light which makes us here at Stewartville D very proud is that Diane auditioned for a solo part in the Negro Spiritual Ride on King Jesus and earned the honor of singing it at the concert. Congratulations for a job well done, Diane. THE SONG OF PEACE ............................................................. The heavens opened wide one night to let the angels through, Who sang for men, the “Song of Peace that only heaven knew. Though centuries have measured time, with each unfolding year, The song still lives in human hearts to bring new hope, new cheer. Men seek with power, to pierce the realm of blue, But love divine unfurled the skies to let a song come through. ROW IjJ. Abbott, S. Jenson, V. Turgeon, G. Lansing, D. Hunt, M. Bussell, C. Kuisle, K. The Future Farmer's of America is an organization for students studying vocation- al agriculture. These students live by the MOTTO: Learning to Do. Doing to Learn. Earning to Live. Living to Serve. F. F. A. is primarily leadership oriented. Students have an equal opportunity to par- ticipate on judging teams and other events. The judging contest areas are in livestock, meats, soils, farm mechanics, crops iden- tification and grading, dairy cattle, poul- try, parliamentary procedure and public speaking. The most publicized part of F.F.A. are the supervised projects which lead a student up the ladder from Greenhand, Chapter Farmer, State Farmer and the top degree of American Farmer. The staff consists of artists, reporters and production staff. The paper is generally sold on the last Friday of the month and contains information about sports, organizations and other events currently of interest to the student body. Oc- casionally short stories, editorials and poems sub- mitted by students are also published. This year's student editor is Maureen Carr and adviser Miss Enger. Membership on the paper is open to anyone in grades even through twelve. 78 SAFETY COUNCIL This was the busiest year for the Stewartville Saf- ety Council since it has began. Films were shown, speakers presented, and programs held. Students have often been enthusiastic about the council though we are still relatively unknown. STUDENT COUNCIL Student Council is the governing body of our school. Up to the Junior Class the council is composed of the class president and an elected representative from each class. In the Junior and Senior class their is the president and two representatives. For money making projects the council sponsors Homecoming and sells ice cream to the student body at noon. LETTERMENSCLUB The Stewartville lettermen's club was busy during the school year raising money for various athletic equipment. The Officers for the 1969-1970 school year are: President — Mike Lawson Vice-President — Greg Malone Sec ret ary-Treasurer — Jack Reiber Advisor -- Mr. Peterson The membership of the Stewartville High School Lettermen's club is about 35. 80 PROJECTIONISTS Faculty and students both benefit from the services the projectionists provide. Audio-visual materials are becoming increasingly important teaching aids in the classroom. Projectionists trained to operate audio-visual equipment make it possible for the teacher to more clearly emphasize certain points in the lesson. The teaching is more effective and students learn more. It would be impossible for the A-V director alone to operate the various pieces of equipment as the teach- ers need them. Student projectionists make this possible and thus become very important co-workers with the teachers in the learning process. 81 ROW 1: N. Carlson, C. Peterson, G. Bredeson, D. Robertson, J. Some of the ways in which they serve the librarian are help- ing to take care of book circulation and book cir- culation records, shelving books, recording new issues of magazines as they arrive, and checking many book lists and bibliographies. They also help other faculty members and students by locating materials for projects, reserving books when specific titles are asked for, and directing patrons, who are browsing for books, to the correct sections. 85 87 Abbott, Jolene 44, 71, 72 Abbott, Kalleen 12,76,84 Abbott, Mark 38 Ace, Timothy 40, 68 Alcott, Joyce 12,76,83,84 Amos, Scott 40 Anderson, Colleen 40,69 Anderson, Jeffrey
