TIGER SPIRIT Presented by The Senior Class Stewartville High School 1962 Dedication Ws, the Senior Class of 1962, dedicate this annual to Mr. John T. Ronan with sincere gratitude for his time and effort put forth in our behalf. He has not only presented facts to us but has made these facts meaningful to us. In this way we feel he has helped prepare us for a more meaningful life. 2 Administration The responsibility of running Stewart ville High School at the height of its ca- pacity rests on the very competent shoulders of the administration and Board of Education. Superintendent Schaefer, administrative head, along with the school board, forms the school policy of Stewartville High. Mr. Knapp, principal, is given the big task of see- ing that this policy is efficiently en- forced. Mr. Wantock, guidance coun- seler and helpful friend of any student with a problem, is the final cog in the efficiently run machinery of our school. Each day throughout the school year you will find Mrs. Roeder and Dorothy Kramer, office secretaries, ready to help students. Each afternoon at 3:45 you will see our two faithful janitors, Oscar Bakken and Maynard Blegen, preparing the building for another day of hard work. Much credit should be given to the cooks, Mrs. Fauver, Mrs. Russert, and Mrs. Murray, who prepare hot lunches for us at noon. The bus drivers, too, perform a service which is dear to the hearts of those who have heard the old-timers tell of walking to school through nine-foot snow drifts. 8 CLASSES 9 Class Motto A Good Mind Possesses a Kingdom Class Colors Blue and Silver Class Flower White Rose Senior Class Officers Class Officers: Treasurer, George Beach; Secretary, Sharon Witter; President, Betty Schleusner; Vice-President Pat Hines. Class Officers The class officers are the elected leaders of their respective classes and are responsible for planning and co-ordinating the activities of their classes. For the seventh graders, being an officer is a new experience in student government and leader- ship. The main projects of the junior high officers are to help plan parties for their classes and to supervise the construction of their Homecoming floats. The duties of the sophomore officers are more varied and involved. Besides keeping minutes and financial records, they lead the class in planning and presenting several dances after the games. The junior officers are undoubtedly busier than any of the other officers. They appoint and head committees for the selection of rings, class play, and most important of all, the Prom. The senior officers have to make graduation plans. They plan announcement and personal cards, and class trips. Advisor, Mr. Koehn, B. Larson, S. Dormody, S. Hayden, J. It is composed of representatives and the class president of each grade who meet weekly under the direction of Mr. Wantock. The activities of the Student Council are varied and deal primarily with the activities and problems of the student body. The Student Council was instrumental in organizing the American Field Service Chapter in Stewartville, thus making it possible to have a foreign exchange student in our school. It also plans and co-ordinates the Homecoming activities which includes the coronation, the parade, the dance, and the selling of Homecoming pins. Each day during the lunch hour, a student council member can be seen selling ice cream, a project that has proven to be very successful. The officers for this year are: Douglas Johnson, president; Mary Engel, vice- president; Paula Ellinghuysen, secretary; and Peggy Lenton, treasurer. TOP ROW: D. Pehl, P. Ellinghuysen, L. Davis, M. The business staff still had the job of collecting annual money and distributing the finished yearbooks. The annual staff was headed by co-editors Mary Engel and John Larson, with Pat Hines as business manager. These people were ably assisted by many department heads and the entire staff. Department heads were: Ron Wilson--Art, Deloris Pehl-- School Life, Dianne Pehl--Classes, Edith Evans--Seniors, Paula Ellinghuysen--Fac- ulty, Laurel Vomhof--Activities, Sharon Witter--Athletics. Yearbook staff is not an activity which draws a lot of attention to the students who participate, but it is one of the most demanding of activities from the viewpoint of time and effort involved. Of course, the satisfaction of realizing that you have played a part in producing a good yearbook makes it all worthwhile. Staff at Work Co-editors STANDING: D. Pehl, E. Skibbe, L. Davis, P. Librarians The librarians do much to aid students who are using the li- brary whether they are doing research work or looking for a good book to read. The duties of the student librarians are many and varied. Much of the time is spent shelving books, signing passes, and checking books out. Mr. Berg is the adviser to the group. Cheerleaders and Letterman SCHOOL LIFE Queen Paula I Homecoming On Thursday, September 29, 1961, the student body of Stewartville High School assembled in the gymnasium for the coronation of our new home- coming queen. Homecoming festivi- ties began with the crowning of the queen by George Beach, captain of the football team . Paula Ellinghuy- sen received the coveted crown and the title, Queen Paula I, 1961 Home- coming Queen. On Friday excitement filled the halls. The students were dismissed from classes at three o’clock to at- tend the parade. Despite the wind and drizzle spirits were high. The winning float was constructed by the freshmen and bore the slogan, It's a Plane-View to Victory. The stu- dents came back to the football field for the pepfest. In the exciting game which followed on Friday evening, the Stewartville Tigers lived ap to the slogan on the freshman float and roared to a 21-13 victory over Plainview. The night was capped by a gala affair, the Homecoming Dance. Stu- dents, faculty, and alumni joined in the festivities. King Marvin Betcher Queen Ellen Bissen Valentine Dance The 1962 Valentine Dance, one of the most successful dances this year, was held February 3, in the high school lunchroom. A romantic mood was set by the beauti- ful decorations provided by the Girls' Friendship Club, sponsors of the Valentine Dance. In the traditional crowning ceremony, Ellen Bissen and Jack Betcher were crowned the King and Queen of the 1962 Valentine Dance. 56 Junior-Senior Prom 1961 The beautiful 1961 Junior-Senior Prom and Banquet featured a Moonlight and Roses” theme.
