02 Tiger Spirit Presented by The Senior Class Stewartville, Minnesota 02 19 6 1 DEDICATION D. WANTOCK GUIDANCE COUNSELOR We, the seniors of 1960, dedicate our annual, 'Tiger Spirit. to Mr. Wantock, in apprecia- tion for the guidance he has given us throughout our hi$i school years. As the guidance counselor, Mr. Wantock has devoted a great deal of time and thought to each senior in helping him plan a happy and successful future. As Student Council advisor, Mr. Wantock has done much to further student-teacher relations. His qualities of friendliness, leadership, and foresight have won a place of high respect and deep admiration among both the student body and faculty. 2 ADMINISTRATION, FACULTY ADMINISTRATION The administration and school board of Stewartville High School perform many vital duties which help to make our education complete. Superintendent Schaefer, the administrative head, has the respon- sibility of forming school policy. The duty of en- forcing this policy is placed in the capable hands of our principal, Mr. Knapp. Student problems which arise concerning the years after high school are easily solved by Mr. Wantock, the school coun- selor. The Board of Education deals with all the problems confronting our school. Without the work of these devoted men, our school would cease to function in such an efficient manner. MR. These individuals do not spend only five days in the classroom but are also willing to give themselves in serving as class advisors or directing school activ- ities. Many teachers voluntarily assume the duty of guiding such extra curricular activities as: The Future Teach- ers of America. Career Club. Future Homemakers of America, Projection Club. Girls' Friendship Club. Future Farmers of America, Girls' Athletic Association, Librarians Club, and various music ensembles. The dedication which this staff possesses is clearly proven by its willingness to be of service at any time, a genuine interest in every student, and the sincere endeavor to prepare us for the future. CLASS OFFICERS When the Seventh Grade Class got together and voted for the lead- ers and representatives of their class, they were exercising student government and democracy for the first time. Their president of the class had to conduct class meetings and attend student council meetings with the elected student council representative. The secretary-treasurer had to keep accurate financial records and min- utes of the class meetings. The Eighth Grade officers found that their duties were very sim- ilar to those of Seventh Grade; but because of a year’s experience, they were able to carry their duties more efficiently. Besides the regular class duties, the officers of the Freshman and Sophomore Classes had to organize the school dances held by their classes each year. The Junior Class officers were without a doubt the busiest of all. They had to appoint committees to choose their class rings, choose their play, organize after-game dances, and others. The Junior Class also had the big job of organizing the annual Junior-Senior Prom. B. Sanderson, G- Kabage, M. Draves, K. Witter. V. Garry, P. Jahns, D. Johnson, L. Daniels. TOP ROW: K Gunderson, S. This organization largely concerns itself with school matters as they pertain to activities, organizational drives, and special events of the students. Student Council members are representatives only and welcome the suggestions of their fellow classmates on ways for improving their school. These suggestions are then considered carefully at weekly meetings under the able direction of Mr. Wantock. This body is well remembered this year for the stupendous Home- coming planned and conducted so successfully. Librarians is a volunteer group of girls who act as student librarians one hour daily. The Book-Ends was recently chosen as a name for their society. Meetings are held every two weeks at which time the girls help to prepare the books for circulation. The students recognize what a valuable service these librarians perform. LIBRARIANS TOP ROW: Miss Larson, J. Davis, F. Boettcher, M. Warren, L. Davis, K. WarTen, K. Nelson, P. Zimprich, M. This banquet is put on by the boys with the money from their various projects, which they have earned. The advisors for the Future Homemakers of America are Miss Ziebarth and Mrs. Woodman. The purpose of the F.H.A. is to promote a growing appreciation of the joys and satisfaction of homemaking, to en- courage democracy in home and community life and to further interest in home economics. SPEECH The speech department is under the direction of Mr. Huntly. This year's junior high final contest was held Decem- ber 15. Students receiving a Superior rating then were advanced to the Senior High finals on February 27. Those winning a Superior here went on to the District Speech Festival at Winona on March 9. Students may choose such categories as Dramatic, Humorous, Original or Memorized oration, serious interpretative reading, story telling, or extemporaneous speaking. Successful attempts have also been made in past years in discussion groups. The many worthwhile activities mentioned here all contribute to the students' mental advancement and their ability to successfully communicate ideas to others. For district speech activities, students receive pins, depending on the number of years they have advanced to that division. TOP ROW: T. Berg, P. Lenton, D. Schroeder, J. Ottjes, S. Rowley, M. SENIOR CLASS PLAY Dirty Work At The Crossroads. a gay' ninties melodrama in three acts, was presented before audiences April 21 and 22. It featured a cast of seven women and three men. It told in laughable style the story of Nelly Lovelace, an innocent country girl; of Adam Oakheart, the stalwart blacksmith's son; and of Munro Murgatroyed, the villain from the big city. With scenes of murder, blackmail, and utter bewitchment, the play moved to a successful conclusion in which the hero and heroine lived happily ever after. The play was accom- panied by music by Mr. Koehn. Between acts various students pre- sented olio acts. They play was directed by Mr. Huntly. The Ole Lady Shows Her Medals by J. M. Barrie was chosen as the one-act play to be directed by Mr. Huntly and played by six enterprising students of SHS. It is said to be probably the most amusing and touching play inspired by the War. An old Scotch charwoman invents a son and finds to her surprise that a fine upstanding soldier adopts her as a mother. Parts were played by those pictured below. It consists of girls and boys from grades 10 through 12. The Girls' Glee Club is made up of senior high girls. Both organizations desire to include it as an extra-curricular ac- tivity in their school program. On their schedule of public performance is a Christmas concert, an operetta, and a spring concert. In addition they provide music at baccalaureate and Commencement exercises. Mixed chorus meets three times weekly, and the glee club meets twice weekly. The choruses are tested in the spring at a mu- sic contest. Mr. Koehn basis his excellent results on the fundamental idea that hard work and a desire to sound well make a top-notch chorus. These students take part in the Christmas and spring concerts by singing special numbers in addition to singing with chorus or glee club.
