We, the Senior Class of 1960, dedicate this our annual, THE TIGER SPIRIT, to Mr. Walt Long, who served our school for twelve years as custodian. After the school day had ended, he worked long hours to prepare the building for the next day's activities. Stewartville High School lost a good friend when Mr. Long moved from this community. Mr. Long will be remembered by all the students for his friendly Good morning and the many favors he extended to students and teachers. 1 HOMECOMING 1959 The crowning of the 1959 homecoming queen w ill probably be longest remembered for the genuine surprise and gratitude registered on the face of the newly crowned queen, Hjordis I. It will also long be remembered for the good will expressed by the lovely attendants who couldn't help but be somewhat disappointed. If they were disappointed, it didn't show in the reception given the announcement of the winning candidate. The homecoming dance and game were well attended. The Aristo-Crats furnished the music for the dance in the cafeteria following the game with St. Charles. Hjordis Ferguson is pictured beginning her reign as Queen Hjordis of the 1959 SHS homecoming celebration. Queen Hjordis and her court: L, toR. REAR: G. Isensee, V. Lovstad, L. Thompson, R. King, J. Copeland. FRONT ROW: S. Ankeny, A. Jahns, Queen Hjordis, G. Long, S. King. Flower girl and page boys were supplied through the courtesy of the faculty families. The slogan, The Tiger's Shine in '59,” couldn't be taken too literally on the night of homecoming, as a steady drizzle turned the field into a sea of mud. However, this was not enough to daunt our team as they took the measure of St. Charles 20-0. At the dance following the game a few of the more rabid fans had some pretty limp curls; but, this didn't dampen any spirits, as everyone was in the same predicament. The senior class of 1960 won the float competition for the third year in a row. The parade was a rather soggy affair as it rained during this homecoming event also. The second place float pictured here was sponsored by the Girls' Friendship Club. The inscription reads OUR GUARDERS K HAVE SNAP. 3 4 VALENTINE DANCE The annual Valentine Party of SHS was held on February 6 with a court composed of juniors selected by the student body. Those selected to represent the junior class were Betty Brekke, Phyllis Eppard, Sally Knapp, Sandy Light, and Nancy Reich for the girls and Dennis Haack. Dennis Hayden. Lavern King, David Mullen- bach, and DuWayne Witter for the boys. Philip Henke and Connie Carlson served as attendants. The coronation arrived with 1959 Valentine Royalty Loren Thompson and Geraldine Long crowning Dennis Hayden and Sandy Light Valentine King and Queen of 1960. 5 ORIENTAL GARDENS The beautiful Oriental Gardens, built by the Junior Class of 1959, had many outstanding features. Those who attended the turkey banquet noticed all the tables with attractive centerpieces. After the banquet, while dancing to the music of Ken Burton's band, they explored further into the oriental gardens. In the punch room, while sip- ping the punch served by sophomores in oriental costumes, they observed the mural of Mt. Fujiyama. In one of the corners, a lily pond added to the night of enchantment. 6 SENIORS CLASS WILL We the notorious seniors of 1960, being of sound and sane minds, as we feel the end drawing near, make and publish this, our last will and testament. Schaefer, Harley Boettcher, Harland King; SEATED; Fred Everts, Lloyd Lenn, Glenn Jahns. Administration Stewartville High School can be proud of its excellent administration and faculty. These men have given freely of their time and talents to instill in us the basic principles necessary to our well being. We students can feel nothing but proud of these people. Mr. Schaefer, our superintendent, although students have little personal contact with him, forms school poli- cies and heads the administrative department. The principal, Mr. Knapp, has the main duty of enforcing school policy, a job he does very well. When students have a problem or question, they can see Mr. Wantock, the school counselor. Many of us have received and appreciated the valuable help he can give. These three are the main stay of Stewartville High School, and carry out their duties in such a way that we can be proud to graduate from Stewartville High School. MR. SCHAEFER, SUPERINTENDENT MR. We are fortunate to have teachers on the faculty of Stewartville High School who are dedicated to their profession of guiding students in their quest for knowledge. They are willing not only to work five days a week in the classroom but also carry on extra curricular duties such as acting as advisors to school organizations and directing school activities. In addition, they chaperone social events and lend a sympathetic ear to students' difficulties and problems. In the years following graduation, the students will remember and appreciate the efforts of their high school teachers and realize the many benefits derived from the knowledge gained during these formative years. 29 Keeping the school office running in smooth order are our secretaries. Mrs. Roeder and Mrs. Tuttle. Each day, as the students and teachers wait in line for their lunch, Mrs. Tuttle punches lunch tickets and gives each student a bright smile. Mrs. Roeder and Mrs. Tuttle are ever ready to help us with our problems. Oscar Bakken and Maynard Blegen are the janitors who are following in the very able footsteps of Mr. Long. They too carry out many of the duties that Mr. Long performed before he left us. Mrs. Russert, Mrs. Murray and Mrs. Fauver take good care of us in the hot lunch room by serving good food with a cheery and friendly outlook. Many hours of their time are spent in planning good meals for us. We are deeply grateful to all of these people who make our day at S.H.S. more enjoyable. ii ATHLETICS TOP ROW: R. Davis, J. FOOTBALL With thin reserves, but veteran starters, the 1959 Stewartville Tiger football team took the field on Sept ember 4 to find out what they had. Their convincing romp over LeRoy (40-6) was the start of a great season. After that they never did put on too much of an offensive or scoring display, but rather relied on their rock-ribbed defense to hold opponents down, while they scored one or two touchdowns. At seasons end, six men were named to All-Conference honors and another Whitewater League Trophy was won for old S.H.S. The slogan, The Tigers Shine in '59, was certainly emblematic as Coach Chuck Stevens chargers won eight straight games, before losing their final outing. With a squad of 25 and a record of 8-1, this team must be considered as one of the best teams in Tiger history. Four deadlines were set up at the begin- ning of the year and the last week before each deadline is spent in a mad rush getting ready for the deadline. The business manager, Ken Schaefer, and staff work very hard selling annuals to the students and selling ads to businessmen who wish to advertise in our annual. Typist, Mary Trumpold, spends many hours after school typing the copy on the pages. Co-editors. Dorthy Lins and Susan King, with the excellent guidance of Mr. Ronan spend many hours in Room 30. Here they plan the annual and lay out of the pages. „ ,. _ . . Ken Schaefer, Business Manager, Mary Trumpold, Co-editors; Dorthy Lins, Susan King. T ni t. 6 ’ 1 ’ BACK ROW; W. Tuttle, D. Farley, H. There is more work and time involved in the production of this paper than many of the students realize. On a Monday, twelve days before the paper is to come out, staff writers receive their assignments. On Friday of the same week these assignments are due to be handed in either to the editors or the advisor. By Monday afternoon of the week of publication all proof reading is completed. Following this, typing after school begins and continues through Thursday when the paper is also mimeographed and stapled together. The editors also must spend a long Monday evening laying the paper out for the typists as it is actually to appear. This is all a rather difficult process which involves many hours of work for many people. But. when you can point out to your friends on Friday noon, I wrote that.” it all seems worthwhile.
