But how uncertain the future looks! The senior class of '53 Will be successful, you will see. Joan took dancing lessons as a tot; When doing the charleston, she's pretty hot. On the threshold of a selling career George's prosperity is very near. Her talents are many, her faults few, Her initials L.B., that's your clue. Norm's pitching ability is supreme; He might star on a big league team. Russ plans to go soon to college; The U. of M. will give him knowledge. In all sports he is quick; A born athlete is our Vic. Into the wild blue yonder Bob Born hopes to wander. B is for Bratrud, who’s not very short; Also for basketball, his favorite sport. A serious problem Brekke must face Is how he'll manage Eisenhower's place. Alice, a great responsibility will carry, When she becomes a missionary. If Aladdin would grant John's wish. All on earth would be Irish. A helping hand Pat would lend; She is truly a faithful friend. A star football center is what we needed; Without Coop , we would not have succeeded. Betty has a sweet personality; You'll also find her full of rascality. To his grandchildren, Larry could tell, How as a strong man, he rang the bell. Dubbs, a wrestling career may seek; He'd make ’Gorgeous George' look weak. Raymond is very quiet and shy; Still he's the apple of everyone’s eye. A penny tossed in a wishing well, Connie wishes work in a large hotel. In your coffee, he's the cream; Joe's the best Norwegian on any team. Cyrilla, with her happy smile; Is so pleasant all the while. In Arnie's pick-up everyone leans; As around the corner it careens. Something Harriet enjoys more than mink; Is skating on a roller rink. If you see a speeding automobile; You can be sure Gordan's i: the wheel. One thing I know we all could feature; Is Janet as a shorthand teacher. When he's out in his Studebaker, To a movie Haack will take her. Helpful and willing is Lois Hart; She's more than ready to do her part. Chuck has a car which is all her own. Oft spends most of her time on the phone. Our Homecoming queen is sweet Janet; A nicer person I've never met. Donna's future is secure for life; She'll probably be a 'miller's' wife. When an ailment does offend you, Call on Dr. Hoeft to mend you. For lessons in basketball. Milt does vow; That he would gladly show you how. Always laughing, never blue. No other one than Mary Lou. John's actions keep you always perplexed, You never know what he'll do next. Lois is one who achieves her goal; And never misses the honor roll. At a smorgasbord Eileen would risk Anything for some lutefisk. Generous, energetic, capacity for fun, If you want gay company, Carol is the one. Marilyn Louks is a ticket-taker; After the last show, you have to wake her. Her hair is something I adore, And her name is Eleanor. After Joe's graduation day. He'll be singing 'Anchors Aweigh.' At most any ballgame, Ev'll be there; If she's not, the occasion is rare. Here is someone who's everyone's fan; His name, of course, is 'Mulligan.' Germaine is our lovely Nightingale; With her voice she will not fail. Lois' piano is her pride; Over the keys her hands do glide. Fun-loving Janice can't be topped; Her laughing spasms are seldom stopped. Rollie's a farmer in the Dell; At this job he does quite well. Years at college might win John fame; To be successful is his aim. Oakes is our first-rate basket maker; From Stewartville High, a future Laker. To talk is delight, Pat must confess; But we enjoy it, none the less. Quiet but witty, shy but gay; Kathleen is special in every way. Bowling is something Dick really likes; Especially when he gets lots of strikes. Norma's a girl who offers much pleasure; Her friendship. I'm sure, you would treasure. Allen, with your shirts so bright; Won't you guide our way tonight. We never knew a gal so sweet Madelyn's sense of humor can't be beat. Whenever Raymond is in a hurry; Must be he's late for a date with Murray. Much time in his car, Glen does roam; Although after midnight, he should be home. Oscars aren't won only through fame; Shirley has one and that’s his name. Her application is signed and sealed; Kathryn will soon go to Northfield. A thousand and One Jokes can't compare; With the bright remarks of Danny Ware. When Virginia smiles, 1 say precisely; Her dimples show up very nicely. If a favor you are in need; Donna will help, you need not plead. Janice to our class is new; Making it an even sixty-two. A clever girl is our Nancy; As an artist she's pretty fancy. Mr. Stoefen was our advisor; No other man could be wiser. 10 SENIOR CLASS COLORS - BLUE AND WHITE CLASS FLOWER - WHITE ROSE CLASS WILL I, Joan Bacon, will my inevitable front seat to anyone with a last name beginning with Z . Our student leaders in this exciting, but a little frightening adventure, were; Kathleen Stoyke, president; Germaine Mullen- bach, vice president; Lois Murray, secretary; John King, treasurer. Our expedition was just at the very beginning of what we all yearned to do. We watched with envy the many advanced expeditions along the way, and tried to imagine ourselves in their places. Our first expedition soon came to an end with the annual picnic held at our last stop. Everyone advanced in our safari to the 8th grade expedition. Now we felt like old hands. Our advisor changed each year, and now Miss Adsem took over leadership of our expedition. Our student leaders were; president, Kathleen Stoyke; vice-president, Jack Bratrud; secretary, Germaine Mullenbach; treasurer, Lois Murray; sergeant at arms, John King. As we were a bit older, our advisor permitted the expedition to have a little time off from the serious part of the school expedition. Probably the best remembered was the party given for our parents. We made our own food, presented a musical program and showed our parents a most interesting basketball game. Possiblywe were gettinga bit cocky;we misbehaved and our advisor refused to permitus to haveourannual picnic. In 1949, our safari enlarged to seventy-eight students when all the students, who had been in smaller safaris around the country, joined us. It was a big day for those who joined the main force and for us. Many of us had joined outside activities which helped to make our expedition a success. Our first year as members of the main safari found many of the boys already participating in all sport programs, and both boys and girls in the musical department. Our new advisor was Mr. Higus, and our student leaders were: president, Nancy Willis; vice-presi- dent, David Hoeft; secretary,Donna Hines; treasurer, Jack Bratrud. The sophomore expedition initiated us as new members of the main Tiger Safari . Carol Loll and Gordon Gustafson were chosen queen and king. We were permitted to hold our picnic on this expedition and had it at Whitewater State Park. In 1950, our fourth expedition became an even more important part of the main safari. Mr. Bacon was our advisor as we entered into this undertaking. Our student leaders were; Lois Ballinger, president; Madelyn Thomp- son, vice-president; Evelyn Meisner, secretary; and Eileen Lee, treasurer. Even more of the boys and girls were participating in extracurricular activities, such as, sports, music and speech. The most important part of our fourth expedition was that we were all getting to know each other better. Due to weather conditions, we were unable to hold our annual picnic where we would have liked; but everyone ended up having a muddy, good time. Our fifth year expedition was really going to be busy. Our advisor, who had a big job ahead of him, was Mr. Hanson. His aides and our able student leaders were: John Byrnes, president, replaced by Harold Brekke; David Hoeft, vice-president; Madelyn Thompson, secretary; Kathleen Stoyke, treasurer. We started off our expedition by winning the Whitewater League in football. Many of the players on the Tiger team were 11th graders. Bas- ketball came along, and with many of our fifth year expedition participating we took second place in the White- water League. Our expedition made a short stop for one of the main events of the year, the Valentine Dance. From the 11th graders, seven boys and seven girls were chosen to serve as candidates. From these candidates the different class expeditions chose a king and queen. The queen candidates were; Germaine Mullenbach, Mary Lou Jordon, Evelyn Meisner, Madelyn Thompson, Nancy Willis, Lois Ballinger and Kathleen Stoyke. The king candidates were: Harold Brekke, Glen Travis, Lowell Dubbels, Harold Mulhern, John King, Joe Evjen and Don Cooper. Don Cooper and Kathleen Stoyke were king and queen. All this time the 11th graders were working hard preparing for the Junior-Senior Prom-Banquet. The main source of revenue was the class play. One Wild Night ,directed by Mr. Bacon with Nancy Willis, Lois Ballinger, Cyrilla Francis, Charlene Henry, Evelyn Meisner, Joan Bacon, Jeannie Lowrie, Germaine Mullenbach, Betty Cooper, John Nickum, David Hoeft. Don Cooper, Allen Thompson, Vic Bittner, John King, Russell Billings and Lowell Dubbels in the cast. All the time, plans were being made for the biggest event of the expedition. On May 10, 1952, the 11th graders presented an Over the Waves banquet and prom for the 12th grade expedition, the teachers, and the school board. Also that spring, our track team gave us another Whitewater victory, and we held our final picnic, which, as a class, we would never have again. Now it was here: the time we all waited for. the sixth and last expedition in the Tiger Safari . It was funny how we wished we were back on some of our earlier expeditions. On our last expedition Mr. Stoefen is our ad- visor. Our student leaders are; Victor Bittner, president; Allen Thompson, vice-president; Eileen Lee, secretary; Lois Ballinger, treasurer. We started our safari off with a bang, by winning all conference, as well as non-con- ference football games. Only 18 points were scored on us. At homecoming our candidates were: Jean Lowrie, Nancy Willis, Madelyn Thompson, Germaine Mullenbach, and Janet Himmer. Janet Himmer was chosen queen As seniors we set up two new clubs, the Speech Club and Thespian Club, under the leadership of Mrs. Hanson and’ Mr. Holden, respectively. We would like to thank all our advisors and teachers who have done so much to help us throughout our school years; and although our last expedition has not yet come to an end. I know we will make it as successful and happy an expedition as the other five have been. We, the class of 53 , sincerely hope we have contributed as much to the Tiger Safari as it has contributed to our growth of knowledge and happy memories. 12 CLASS PROPHECY Everyone, tune up your imagination! We are now in the year 1970 and are beginning the trip into the African jungle to visit the noted colony of Tigertown , established primarily by the Stewartville Class of 1953. Harold Brekke and Norman Betcher, co-owners of a large steamship line, gave us passage on a streamer, piloted by Joe Mattison. John King and Nancy Willis, ace reporters, and Lowell Dubbels, photo- grapher, are traveling with us to plan a magazine article. Victor Bittner, the leader, Milton Howe, and George Ballinger, the famous big game hunter, welcomed us to the colony. Milt has been chosen to be our guide throughout our stay. We find that our hotel is owned by Connie Evenson's husband. Connie just remarked that Don Cooper and Ray Engel are bellboy's, and that Norma Taylor is the head waitress in the dining room. Our guide suggested that we explore the school first. The faculty is headed by Superintendent John Nickum and Principal Janet Gustaf- son. The secretaries, Harriet Grams and Janet Himmer, told us of several departments headed by 1953 graduates. The home economics and agricultural departments are the most important in the school. Kathryn Trygstad and Pat Sanborn are in charge of the sewing and cooking divisions, respectively; while Evelyn Meisner and Charlene Henry aid the housewives. Allen Thompson and Rollie Nelson teach the youth ag. classes and Henry Haack and Glen Travis demonstrate modern methods to the farmers. Joan Bacon and Pat Carson have developed a successful commercial course. Under the coaching of Harold Mulhern, Dick Swygman, and Don Oakes, and active interest in sports has been established. The girls' physical education is instructed by Mary Lou Jordan and Carol Loll. Jeannie Lowrieand Lois Kirkland have developed a large art depart- ment. Here comes Jack Bratrud, Tigertown banker, headed for Ray Thompson's barber shop. We are now ready to tour the new hospital. The head doctor is Dave Hoeft, assisted by Cyrilla Francis. Their secretaries are Donna Hines and Janice Nelson. Donna Weber, Eileen Lee, and Janice Wib- benare all head nurses; with Kathleen Stoyke as a medical technician. Two of the ambulance drivers are Arnold Gathje and Larry Davis. Louks. they commute to the United States to receive new information which is used to improve Tigertown . They inform us that we'll be flying home in one of Russell Billings' airplanes. Robert Born is the pilot, and Madelyn Thompson and Virginia Weatherly are the steward- esses. Let us now switch back to 1953 where we will end this prophecy. 13 HOMECOMING 1952 On October 3 the annual homecoming celebration was held. The festivities began with a pep fest in the high school gym. Immediately following, the annual parade was held with the band, boy scouts, and different organizations of the school taking part. There were many floats, one of which held a gigantic skunk with a sign reading, Skunk 'em . Another held an S.H.S. football play- er plowing a Plainview player under. The grade children marched carrying banners with slogans printed on them. The band led the parade, and the cheer- leaders led the crowd in cheers for the Tigers. Kick-off time was 8 P.M. with everyone turning out to see the game. Dur- ing the halftime the band gave a splendid marching performance and did a |______| I specialnumber with different steps to the tune of Truly Fair ; the queen can- didates were then presented to the crowd. Following the game, the homecoming dance was held in the high school auditorium which was gaily decorated with fall colors and footballs. At 10:30 the coronation ceremony began with the following attendants: Germaine Mullenbach, Nancy Willis, Jeannie Lowrie, and Madelyn Thompson, and their es- corts entering the gym. Following the attendants came little Joyce Holden, the crown bearer. Queen Janet Himmerthen entered the gym escorted by the co-captains, Harold Brekke and Victor Bittner. After the coronation, a grand march led by Queen Janet and Captain Harold, the attendants and their escorts took place. Music for the dance was provided by the Bennett-Greten Orchestra. With the playing of the final number, the 1952 Homecoming Festivities came to a close. JUNIOR SNAPS JUNIOR CLASS HISTORY We, the Juniors, wish to take you on a safari through the maize of our school days at Stewartville. We started out with Miss Doty as our seventh grade advisor, Elaine Mullenbach was president, Daniel Harwich, vice president, Alice Murray, secretary, and Paul Strieff, treasurer. From each safari of our school were picked a few of the students to represent each safari. Elaine Mul- lenbach and Alice Murray were our representatives. We felt so small in comparison to the other safaris, and rather bewildered with all the new activities. The safari ended with a picnic and report cards. For three months we waited for our next safari to begin. This was led by Mr. Hillesland. We were more settled than we were in the seventh grade. Pat Keefe was the president. The vice president was Orrel Thompson, the secretary was Shirley Adler and the treasurer was Richard Egan. The nine months moved quickly and soon they were over. Our biggest adventure came the next year with Mr. Hillesland as our class advisor. To this safari was added many new members. There were seventy-nine in all. It was fun making new friends in this journey. It gave the class new pep and interest with all the new personalities added. The class officers were Richard Egan, president, Don Podien, vice president, Elaine Mullenbach, secretary and Paul Strieff, treasurer. Richard Engel and Richard Egan was elected to the Student Council. The most exciting thing that happened at the beginning of the year was initiation. The sophomores made us dress in costumes and play leap frog across the field. We had lots of fun at the three parties given through the year. The roller skating party stands out as the most exciting. Our safari ended with the annual picnic held at LeRoy, Minnesota. Journeying on into the sophomore year, we were guided by Lester Hinkle as president, Mildred Amos, vice president, Lucille Osborn, sec- retary, and Walter Keefe, treasurer. Mr. Denne was our advisor. Our Student Council members were Richard Egan, Cynthia Bouscein, Alice Murray, and Elaine Mullenbach. Our safari ended with a class picnic at Whitewater State Park. Now we are on our most exciting journey of all. Our Junior year is being guided by Mr. Jacobson. Cynthia Bouscein was elected president, Charlotte Carroll, vice president; Elaine Mullenbach, secretary and Phylis King, treasurer. The above members were also on the Student Council. We put on the Falling Leaves Dance for the freshman in September. Seventeen have worked hard on the class play, Who Wouldn't Be Crazy, given November 21 and 22, under the able direction of Mr. Bacon. Our journey is not completed; we are looking forward to many happy, interesting times, especially to the Junior-Senior Prom. We are also looking ahead to our senior year and hope it will be the final journey that will lead us to a happy successful life when our high school journey is complete and we go out into the world. 2? Optimism was riding high inTiger- ville. Coach Ken Hanson, starting his first year as head coach, and assistant coach Jerry Otterness had 16 lettermen, 8 of them regulars, returning from the 1951 squad, plus 45 other boys out for their initial try at football. The outlook for a season had never been better in S.H.S. The first few weeks rolled quickly by in learning fundamentals and getting acquainted with the split T system of football. When it came time for the first game the Tigers were ready and anxious to start. Lake City, a traditional rival, was the first team to fall to the powerful Tigers. They put up a tough scrap, but went down to defeat 20-0. Next week Le Roy came to town. They played their hearts out, but simply couldn't match the Tigers power and were defeated 19-0. In their third game the Tigers journeyed to Wabasha for the first Whitewater Conference game. The Tigers continued on their winning way by whipping Wa- basha 25-0. Next week was Homecoming and the Tigers' chief rival, Plainview, was coming to town. It was in this game that the Tigers played their finest ball of the season and gave Plainview a 33-0 trowncing. Chatfield was the next victim of the Tigers. The Tigers turned what was supposed to be a tough game into a rout and won easily 32-0. St. Charles was next on the Tiger list. The Tigers won the game 26-6 but lost a moral victory as St. Charles crossed the Stewartville goal for the first time in the season. Lewiston was the last conference game of the year. The Tigers won 47-12 and this brought Stewartville its first Whitewater Conference Championship. The final game of the year found the Tigers facing Farmington. Once again the speed and power of the Tigers were too much and Stewartville won 19-0. The 1952 season was the most successful the Tigers have enjoyed in several years. It was a season that saw a team, which many called the best over-all team in S.H.S. history, march undefeated through eight straight games, lettered 31 boys, placed four boys on honorable mention for the All-State team, and had one player elected to the All-State team. Stewartville High School can truly be proud of its great team of 1952. 29 Joe Evjen, Don Cooper, Ray Thomp- Vic Bittner, Harold Brekke, John son, Dave Hoeft King, Ray Engle The bulwark of the Stewartville Tigers football season of 1952 was the sixteen boys pictured above who are closing their gridiron career at S. H. S. The entire starting team consisted of seniors. Not only did these boys play exceptional ball, but they were also the inspirational leaders of the team that rolled undefeated through its entire season. Stewartville High School will certainly miss these boys when football season comes around in 1953. BASKETBALL The basketball season of 1952- 1953 found S. H. S. Tigers optimistically looking forward to the coming season. There were good reasons for optimism in the Tiger camp. The entire tournament team of the previous year was re- turning, plus five other boys up from the B squad. Prospects have seldom been so bright in S. H. S. Coach Burt Eppen sent his boys into the first game with the Rochester B team well prepared and ready to bring more athletic glory to Stewartville High. The Tigers showed their power by easily beating Rochester 36 to 17. The next week the Tigers came home to face Kasson. Once again they rolled to easy victory. This time by 52 to 28. Lewiston next week was the same story. The Tigers height and ability winning out by 49 to 34. Plainview was next on the list. The short but scrappy Gophers put up a terrific battle before going down to defeat by 52 to 47. Pine Island was the fifth straight Tiger victim. The game started close, but the Tigers sewed it up and went on to win 68 to 45. St. Charles, the following week too proved to be the toughest opponent the Tigers had faced, in a nip and tuck game the Tigers finally won 46 to 44. The Le Roy game proved to be some-what of a breather for the Tigers, for they piled up an early lead and then went on to win the game 61 to 39. Wabasha followed the pattern of the seven earlier games as they too fell to defeat by 56 to 42. A- nother game with Lewiston was next on the Tigers schedule. The second game proved no different than the first as the Tigers won 55 to 35. Plainview was the victim in Stewartville's tenth straight victory. What was expected to be a close game turned into a rout as the Tigers won 61 to 40. At the time this publication came out the Tigers had cinched the White- water Conference Championship and were one of the few undefeated teams in the entire state. The season of 1952-1953 gave Stewartville a team that it could be proud of and one that it will remember for years to come. 31 BASKETBALL“B” Left to right-FIRST ROW--Douglas Pitt, Harold Kidd, Connie Edgar, Paul Engel, Bill Aanested, Norbert Mills, Vern Billings, Jim Byrnes,SECOND ROW--Jimmy Lenn, Dayton Rud, Marvin Haack, Gerald Weber, Lambert Mulhern, Peter Streiff, Manager Jackie Roeder, Coach Jerome Otterness. The students of Stewartville High School have taken a definite interest in music the past two years. They have played and sung at various activities and have given their wholehearted support to all of them. Under the direction of Mr. Lyle F. Stoefen, the band, glee club and mixed chorus have taken home ratings that they can well be proud of. The ensemble music contest held at St. Charles in 1952, as well as the group contest held at Lake City saw the music department of S.H.S. representing their school in admirable style. The girls’ glee club received an A rating on the songs, So's I can Write My Name and the Cherubim Song. The mixed octe also received an A rating while all of our other entries came back with B rat- ing s. Our contests this year are to be held as follows: the local contest will take place March 6, the regional contests March 25 and 27. Our band has supported our teams this year, both with their playing and by doing formations. They have marched on Memorial Day, for the Homecoming Parade, and will play at the basketball tournament to be held at Rochester this year. At the time of this printing, we are working hard on our contest piece, Legend with hopes for a good rating. 39 KINDERGARTEN FIRST ROW; Bobby Bakken, Lana Herrick, Jerome Burger, Linda Harne, Anthony Bell, Lonny Oeltjen, Connie Haack Barbara Pm Sandra Eyenson, Linda Taylor.
